Dave and I are starting the South Beach diet on Monday (tomorrow) and wondered if anyone else here is doing it?
We have to do it because A) we are over weight, but B) most importantly we are allergic to wheat, rice and corn and must eliminate these from our diet. SB seemed the easiest way to do it since Phase 1 won't let you eat any of the grains.
We just wondered if you had found some good recipes and web sites for support. So far we found a pretty good forum SB Diet Forum (http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=2)
And a good site for recipes and information: Miz Frog's SB Diet Site (http://www.mizfrogspad.com/south_beach_diet.htm)
We haven't joined the SB site because they don't go up to Dave's size and it seemed pointless to spend money we don't have when I'm going to have to figure out all his portions anyway. (They told me that at 6'8" his ideal weight was 168 to 202...yeah if he's dead  )
Any and all help, tips and advice would be groveled over.
Peace,
Jane

Jane, last night Jeremy and I were in a Barnes and Noble bookstore and we were just walking around looking at all the books. I saw a book in one of the new book sections called The South Beach Diet Cookbook. I didn't look inside it (and Jeremy was more interested in the Sex On The Beach Cookbook, lol), and I don't know if it would be of any help to you, but at least you know that it's available.
I live off of the South Beach Diet Plan. I have end stage liver
disease and my doctor prescribed it as the most healthy diet for my liver. When I used to model I could eat anything I wanted but then the big 40 hit and OH MY GOSH!!! I could just look at ice cream and my hips would inflate! Now I stay around 140 pounds and I am 5'10" tall. But more importantly I feel so much better limiting my carbs. I was a self professed carb addict before I was diagnosed. I NEVER thought that the diet would work for me (long term). My cravings have actually stopped and my liver enzymes have stabilized. I also have RA in my hips (as a result of the bad liver) and I truly think
I am not in as much pain. Listen to your body..and watch the "fat" intake. I know quite a few people who loaded up on bacon and red meat (which I can't eat at all) and ended up with gall stones:( If you ever need any advice feel free to write anytime at vanderson@tgh.org. I work at a hospital and actually checked this diet out with numerous docs before starting it..
The new South Beach Diet cook book is wonderful!

My doctor also told me to do the South Beach Diet.... I would love to if I had the time... but I don't.. You have to do a lot of cooking.... So I am going back on the Atkins Diet it's easier when on the run or your eating out because restaurants now cater to atkins diets.....
I wish you luck and I hope your successful!!

You could easily lose 18lbs. a year without doing the South Beach diet. Simply adding exercise to your lifestyle or cutting down on junk food will get you to acheive your goal. If you don't already, go for a 30-60 mins. walk three days a week, watch what you eat, and in a year you will definitely lose at least 18 lbs.
If you really want to try the SB diet go for it too. My workout partner, a guy who is 6'8" follows the SB diet. He was over 300lbs. at the end of the sumer in 2003. By the beginning of this past summer he was lean and around 250lbs. He does workout intensely though.
He is an elementary school teacher and found the SB diet to be easy to follow and not overly strict for him. He had a problem with following any type of diet. He lacks self disclipine. What I know about the SB diet is that you do eat carbs but you eat carbs according to their G.I levels (the way it affects your insulin levels). Certain carbs you can eat with certain meats or fats to change the speed of which it is absorbed by your body. On the SB diet he was eating store bought turkey subs and other things that most would think aren't "diet" foods.
Good luck! :)

When you don't eat enough your body holds on to everything you do eat because it thinks it's in starvation mode. Try eating more. Weird as it may seem it may actually work.

What I wonder is this: if there are times when one can't eat (because of sickness or emotional upheaval,) does the body re-regulate itself when normal eating resumes, or is the metabolism messed up for awhile or forever?
If you skip a meal or a few your body won't be "messed up". If you eat one meal a day for many months or even years your body could suffer from it. When you start to eat right you will gain weight. Sometimes even more than what you may have lost starving your body. Also, your thyroid would slow down which would cause your metabolism to slow down as well and it would be harder to lose weight. Sometimes when the damage is done you can speed up your metabolism again just by changing the way you eat. Sometimes it remains slow forever. Eating 5- 6 small meals a day instead of three meals a day is a way to speed up your metabolism.
Building muscle helps burn fat too. Muscle weighs more than fat, takes up less space than fat, and burns more calories at rest than fat. And don't worry women can not get big, bulky muscles naturally! The only way you will get bulky from weight lifting would be if you upped your fat intake and were actually putting on fat on top of the muscle you are growning. Otherwise your body will look leaner and trimmer. Even if the scale shows you weigh more.
