Children's Corner

I thought it might be nice if we had a thread to
list children's books that we think are extra good.

My son's favorite day at school is library day-
he is 8 and in the second grade.
He likes to check out books about animals, bugs and sea-life.
I like reading those too!
:p

Last summer we read the from the series-
"The Boxcar Children".
The writing is a bit old fashioned, but he liked them
and we read everyday while he was on summer break.

Our kids will be out of school soon and a list of good
books to keep our kids reading for the summer would
be nice to list here.
We need to keep them in good reading practice
for next school year!

What are/were some of your children's favorite books?
I do ask that when you list the books for kids,
please include what age group these books are best for.

Thanks!

Great suggestions Danika!

My son is in second grade, but reads at a 5th to 6th
grade level.
I am very pleased that he loves to read as much.
All my kids like reading and they like to write their own
stories at times too.
(The teens don't do it as much anymore).
I have all their stories and poems saved-
they are precious to me.

The only book that my son, his name is Wyatt by the way,
came home with that I was not that impressed with,
was a book titled, "Captain Underpants"-
and he checked this book out at the school library too.
Call me a prude I guess,
but I just didn't think it was an appropriate book
to have in the school library.
There was a lot of what I call, "bathroom humor" in it.
It wasn't real overt, but enough that I put the book up
after browsing through it, not letting him read it.
I never complained to the school, (maybe I should have),
but did tell Wyatt not to check it out again.
We went up to our local library and found him something else
for that week's reading.

I'n not sure what Wyatt will be reading this summer,
but I try to get him into a series of books that will go the
duration for his vacation.
I have him read 30 minutes every day all year long.
I think it is especially important for them to read in the
summer so they don't have get back the momentum in
the Fall when school starts up.

Oh, and all my kids love Shel Silverstein,
(and so do I)!
:p

My kids love Magic Treehouse books, Junie B. Jones, just about any book by Dav Pilkey (Captain Underpants books), Shel Silverstein, etc.

I was browsing the library today after finally dropping by to get my DC public library card, and I saw one of my old favorite children's books, The Court of Stone Children, by Eleanor Cameron. It's probably a 5th or 6th grade reading level book; I can't remember when I first read it, but I reread it a lot. It's a murder mystery/ghost story about a young girl in San Francisco who meets the ghost of another young girl in a French art museum. Beautifully written and highly recommended -- but as a note, it's a fairly slow-paced book.
