Book Club and Discussion

I had an idea and I was wondering what you all
thought about it.

How about having an Ageless Book Club that takes
on reading a certain book and then has some discussion
about the book after all in the club have read it?

I don't know what book would be chosen for all to read-
but that could be something the club decides on.

Let me know what you think!

Sign me up!!
I think this is a great idea!!!
I have been looking for a book group to join and I would be more than happy to try it online.
I think it could be wonderful because the people in this forum have so much to offer. I think you could really get some interesting discussions going with this group.

I hope more members respond. I'll be waiting!

I would love to be part of the book club. I enjoy both fiction and non-fiction. My only concern is that I can't afford to spend much money on books for a while. I know, it's terrible to have to think of such practical considerations where books are concerned.

I looked at Barnes and Noble Top 100 today...Of course the number one book was Bill Clinton's biography. Can we not do that? *smiles*

However, I saw a couple interesting choices and thought I would toss them out here...see what you all thought.

"The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom

"From the author of the phenomenal #1 New York Times bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie, a novel that explores the unexpected connections of our lives, and the idea that heaven is more than a place; it's an answer.

Eddie is a wounded war veteran, an old man who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his "meaningless" life, and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: "Why was I here?"

OR

"Reading Lolita in Tehran" by Azar Nafisi

" Every Thursday morning for two years in the Islamic Republic of Iran, a bold and inspired teacher named Azar Nafisi secretly gathered seven of her most committed female students to read forbidden Western classics. As Islamic morality squads staged arbitrary raids in Tehran, fundamentalists seized hold of the universities, and a blind censor stifled artistic expression, the girls in Azar Nafisi’s living room risked removing their veils and immersed themselves in the worlds of Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henry James, and Vladimir Nabokov. In this extraordinary memoir, their stories become intertwined with the ones they are reading. Reading Lolita in Tehran is a remarkable exploration of resilience in the face of tyranny and a celebration of the liberating power of literature. "

OR

"The Life of Pi" by Yann Martel

This one is really critically acclaimed.
"Though all of our volunteer readers weighed in with "two thumbs up," we knew this was a winner when our fiction buyer -- not given to hyperbole -- declared it "one of the best books I've ever read!" Yann Martel's Life of Pi deserves every word of that praise. Drawing parallels between zoology and theology, Martel's novel is by turns amusing, intellectually astute, and poignant. And his Kiplingesque adventure tale will cause readers to reexamine beliefs of all kinds.
Meet Pi Patel, a young man on the cusp of adulthood when fate steps in and hastens his lessons in maturity. En route with his family from their home in India to Canada, their cargo ship sinks, and Pi finds himself adrift in a lifeboat -- alone, save for a few surviving animals, some of the very same animals Pi's zookeeper father warned him would tear him to pieces if they got a chance. But Pi's seafaring journey is about much more than a struggle for survival. It becomes a test of everything he's learned -- about both man and beast, their creator, and the nature of truth itself.

With a brilliant combination of sensitivity and a precise economy of language, Martel develops a story some readers might find less than credible. But his capacity for the mysterious, and a true understanding of the depths of human resilience will compel even the most skeptical of readers to continue on the fantastic journey with Pi, and an unusual 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. "

Anyway, I thought I would throw some suggestions out there, and would love to hear some more. I hope we can find something we all have not read!

My mom kept calling me into her room last time I was home to read bits of Life of Pi outloud to me. I enjoyed them and would definitely be interested in reading the whole book sometime.

Also, everyone here's probably read it except for me, but what about The Da Vinci Code?

I actually also was leaning towards the PI book, but thought I should put up a choice in case someone had already read it.

Im up for about anything actually... *smiles*

I just started reading two books: The Red Tent and Me Talk Pretty One Day. So, selfishly I would love to suggest either of those:D only because I don't think I can manage three at one time!!!

How much time will we have to read each book?

I'd like to read "Life of Pi" also. I'll have to browse around a little more before I put forth my own ideas.

Moon- "The Red Tent" sounds interesting. What's it about?

Hi Book Club!
I'm sorry-
I thought all of you would pick a book that
appeals to all of you.
I didn't realize that you were waiting for me to choose.
Things have been super busy for me at work-
in the catering biz, this time of year is crazy!!
(Lots of weddings!)
And it will be this way until the end of September,
(or longer).

Anyway-
I am going to let you decide by majority rules-
so maybe you could take a vote on the books that
have been suggested and then start reading.

What do you all think is a good timeline for
finishing the book?

If you would like for me to conduct the
poll, I will, just let me know.

Hi Sage!

I think it would work if you did a little poll, if you wouldn't mind that. As for the time to read the book... at least a couple weeks, since a lot of people are very busy.

Yay!

Hi Book Club

We are still waiting on 3 other members of the
Book Club to check in and vote.

I'll give them to tomorrow, (Monday),
and if they have not checked in here by then-
I'll post what book you will all be reading.

Looks like a tie in the poll!
LOL

But look for a post about this by Monday night
and then you can all get started reading!

okay, the book that you will all be reading is:

The Da Vinci Code

I think a two week limit will be good and
then everyone will return here to discuss the book!

Have fun!

I just got the book, and will start it right after the holiday. I am a really fast reader though, so I shouldn't lag too far behind you all who might have already got started.

I tend to pick up and book, and not be able to put it down until I have read the entire thing. Then I will go back and reread it to absorb more detail and kind of contemplate it.

I was really lucky, My mother had just purchased this..and I got to borrow it from her. Its probably driving her nuts..she hadn't even gotten to read it herself yet.

Im excited about having someone to discuss the book with, so Danika if your a dork....Im probably president of the National Organization of Dorks! *smiles*

Okay, everybody, go get the book or order it from Amazon or what have you. Lets all get started!

Hi Everyone:

Hope that you are enjoying your holiday safely.

Wow a book club, please count me in. I peeked in Ageless alittle late, and missed the bookclub news but I would have suggested something else. Oh well, The Da Vinci Code it is then.
