I've been told I have a thick southern accent, but I've also been told I have a, "TexMex" accent as well (due to my Mexican heritage). I don't know that my accent is sexy or not. Maybe I need to record myself and make my own conclusions! :D

A southern accent can be very sexy as long as it's not so totally hillbilly that one can't understand what's being said. . .

I never thought I had an accent and Joe doesn't think I have an accent either. But when I lived in Indiana, every time I opened my mouth, someone would say "You're not from here, huh? Are you from Atlanta?" Don't know how they sound in Atlanta, never lived there. :D

I went to college in TN, accents there can vary from "proper" to "redneck". lol

Way back when I lived in KS I was informed that Texas, OK, and KS accents aren't considered southern, they're considered Western accents. Interesting given nobody on the Pacific coast talks like that. :D So, um, I guess that would mean ya'll have a Texas accent Peach and I would suppose rightfully so given that everything is bigger in Texas and thus ya'll deserve your own accent. :D ;)

An Atlanta accent is, um, ever seen Designing Women? The whole Julia Sugarbaker (Dixie Carter's character) accent is quite close to those I dealt with from Atlanta.

Hey, ya'll could be from Maine like me where nobody uses their 'r's!!!

It all depends.

Sexy with the ladies, yes. For sure! I bet listening
to Southerngal's accent would make me melt.

With guys, I don't know. I heard a Southern guy
complain how every time other folks heard you use
that accent, they want to talk to you real S-L-O-W.

lol

I think the Black Southern lingo is interesting and
hilarious at times.

Once I was watching a documentary on blues/folk
music and the elderly black musician being interviewed
somewhere in Mississippi, talked about how he learned
different instruments as a youngster. He said that
so-and-so "...larned me the harmonica"

:D That was neat to hear.

I looove those country-isms. My pa (from East Texas)
would sometimes say "Sheeee-it" instead of "Sh*t"

Anybody else have folks that talk like that?

Other examples of Dixie to Yankee translations:

Sho' Nuff = Sure Enough

Fixin' to = Going To

:) :D I better stop now.

Having been born and raised in Ky., I've been told all my life that I have a southern accent. However, anyone from Ky. knows that Ky. is not a southern state. It's a border state. It's neither southern nor northern. But, we have a very distinctive accent. I can always spot someone from Ky. We always add an extra syllable to one syllable words. For example, day would be pronounced dayee. And, we're not good at saying short e sounds. For example, get is usually pronounced git.

Oh yes, Harrison, we have several colloquialisms. For example, Jeet? means "Did you eat?"

I think the funniest thing ever said to me about my accent was by Joe, the guy from Ireland I dated last year. Now, he had lived in the Bronx for several years before moving to NJ. So, his accent was all mixed up. But, Joe liked to tell me that I have a "twang." I just thought it was funny that a guy from Ireland with a NY accent was teasing me about my own accent.

Oh well, suppose I do have an accent. But, what's wrong with that? Accents are all relative. We ALL have an accent, no matter where we come from. :p

I'll bet Kentuckians also use the extraneous "done,"
as in "I done heard enough!" :)

Yup! I'm southern. Lived in Lousiana my whole life. Funny thing about La. is the accent varies to great degrees depending on the area you are in. Down in cajun country around Lafayette, Breaux Bridge and Thibedeaux, even I have a hard understanding them at times. The stronger the cajun french is, the more confused I get.

Scoot over to New Orleans and it changes depending on what side of river you're on, LOL .... I also think the closer to the borders you get, you hear more influence from the neighboring states. I tried really hard to not speak redneck, but my ma' and pa' are country folk. If I git around them too long, I catch myself digressing. (yes I did that on purpose :p)

My California boyfriend loves to jab me about my pronunciation of certain words. I said "po-emmm" one day and never heard the end of it. (was supposed to poem) He claims he doesn't have an accent....... yea right.

edit: Almost forgot to answer the original poster's question! I think southern accent on a guy can be sexy if the drawl isn't too bad and he doesn't sound like a redneck. ;)

Of course, some accents I prefer over others-
but there are none that I dislike a lot.

First of all - thanks Harrison;) Not sure that my accent would melt ya, but its definitely a Texas accent lol. But like Sage said, I probably wouldnt change it if I could, its just part of me!

I dont know that Californians have such a strong "accent" per se, but they do have those words that only they use like "b*i*t*c*h*i*n".

I really do love those true southern accents - which ARE different than mine. I think Molly was right - we Texans have an accent all our own. The people from LA, GA, NC and SC all have different southern accents lol. Anyway, I love to hear those people talk. Julie has such a nice accent - she does sound like Julia Sugerbaker (now dont flog me for sayin that Julie - its a compliment!!)

1. ritecheer = right here
2. ritedare = right there
3. down in tha holler = down in the hollow (valley)
4. sit for a spell = sit down for a while
5. furgitit = forget it

I'm often told I have an accent. I think that living in Germany and France and speaking those languages for 5 years probably accounted for most of the accent. I was also married to a German man for 17 years and we spoke a lot of German with his family. A few people have told me that I have an Icelandic accent; I have *no* idea what Icelandic accents sound like. I don't hear any accent when I speak....but, then again, who hears their own accent?

Hey Kelley, there are many different dialects just within the state of Kentucky. People from the western end sound completely different from the eastern end.

You were close on the pronunciation of Louisville. Those of us who grew up around Louisville pronounce it Lou-ah-vull. There was even a bumper stucker about this a long time ago. I'll demonstrate for you this weekend and you all can laugh at my goofy twang. :p

I just love accents.... I spent my first 10 years in New York City. And then my family moved up to New Hampshire.
For those of you not familiar with accents of the Northeast, these two accents are almost polar opposites!

I remember we were moving into our new place and the phone rang, I answered it and the person on the other end asked for someone who's name sounded like "Bahb".

Now to me, that was BOB, a man.
I said, "I think Bob moved to a new house he doesnt live here anymore"
and the voice said, "No its a woman...Bahb...Bahbrahhh!!" :p

Right then and there I decided I wont talk like them, I wont do it!! *stomps foot* (I was also a huge Yankees fan in Red Sox country---fun stuff!)
I think over the years my accent has settled into a sort of non-descript very generic Northeast accent and I just love New England (even tho I live in NY!!).

I have lived also in Mississippi where I attempted to waitress.

This was a bad idea because there truly was a language barrier!
I ended up working part time in a clothing store and part time in a restaurant with a drive-thru.
I loved the warmth and friendlyness of the people in the south but boy I'd just have to crack up when someone swung around the drive-thru yelling "YALL GOT CHICKEN GIZZARDS??" :D
But it was fine because they sure got a kick out of me too!!

LOL Kelley! Even within Louisville, people tend to say it different ways, but the majority of us around here say Lou-ah-vull, although there's not much emphasis on the "ah" part. :p

Wish I could find a bumper sticker that says that on it. If I run across one, I'll bring it and show you.

There used to be an old joke that went, "How do you pronounce the capital of Kentucky... is it Louisville, Louaville or Louahvull?" The person would pick one of the choices and then the person asking would say, "WRONG! it's Frankfort." Bad joke.

I was raised somewhat with neighbors from Wisconson or Minnesota, and sometimes the o's get a little long, cracks me up at myself, but otherwise, Nope! No Accent for me! Hey Marie and Xited1, everybody has an accent!! We all come from some place that has it's own unique speaking style and tone. Everybody has their own accent that reflects where they are from. They're not always as obvious as some others, but that accent is there.

Dictionary.com states an accent is:

"A characteristic pronunciation, especially:
a. One determined by the regional or social background of the speaker.
b. One determined by the phonetic habits of the speaker's native language carried over to his or her use of another language."

Those of us who were naturally born within the U.S. would fall under category a. We all come from different regions in the U.S. and therefore have a unique pronunciation based upon where we live.

Sorry guys, it just kills me when someone thinks they don't have an accent. We all have one. :D

Kelley said that Tim said:

Oh! One day we were grocery shopping (*grin* the local cashiers just love to ask him to say "British" things like, "bloody hell" ) and, as we were walking through the bread aisle, Tim does a double take and says, "Oh. Magod! What is that? We do not have that in England!" He was referring to English Muffins. After going on and on for months about the injustice of declaring a food "English" when it's not English at all, he finally tried one and has declared them delicious.

Kelley (and Tim) in a grocery store with a large international food section I saw what I THOUGHT were english muffins but they looked a bit, well too moist to be english muffins---the package said CRUMPETS! I have no idea. I had assumed Crumpets were more like cream puffs LOL.....
And let me tell you---if you have never tried an English MARS bar, you are missing out.
What is it about American made candy bars?
Its all 100% sugar in various colors and textures.....I refuse to eat anything but European chocolate when I choose to indulge in it!!
My fave is a german made chocolate with hazelnuts and raisins--YUMMY!!

Kelley, I had some Australian lamb chops that I refused to make until I found mint sauce or mint jelly (I finally found it, thank God). I was wondering why my parents always had mint jelly with lamb. I definately want it when I eat lamb.

You should try Welsh Rarebit on toasted crumpets; it is incredibly good! It's a cheese sauce made with beer, worchestershire sauce, dry powdered mustard and a little cayenne, I think. It's fantastic in my opinion, but my tastes are weird for a lot of people. I love that stuff!

Okay I came on to reply about southern accents, but am finding we are talking about Sushi now, so I will combine my thoughts. LOL

SUSHI ----------ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I spent a month in Hawaii once in the 70s floating around living with Hawaiian families, learned to fish like the old Hawaiians, make Lau Lau's, etc., the old customs, but oh well that is another story.....back to the sushi. I ate raw Octupus and Salmon, but the worst was Sushi. Im told you have to develop a taste for it.

About Sourthern accents. I could be mistaken, but I think Molly that Ya'll is not spelled Ya'll in Texas. We don't think of it as a contraction...it is just one word...YALL. :) Yall can mean one person as well as many, so Ya'll would be you all referring to more than one person. I say yall to one person as well as many.

Also, I have noticed that the word aight (spoken like a slang of Alright) is used by a lot of kids today......Im sorry people, we have been saying that forever down here in the south. I say "Auiiiight then" all the time and "fixin to."

Rick loves my accent....he said I say Riiiiick for Rick, but I dont always notice. I love accents of all kinds, so sourthern accent is okay with me.

Has anyone ever seen the movie SLING BLADE with Billy Bob Thornton....THAT IS EXACTLY how people in Northeast Texas talk. EXACTLY!!! Billy Bob is from Arkansas and he got the language down perfect for that movie. My family and I talk like that around each other for a joke, but try to use better English in public. lol

Speaking of food, lol, has anyone ever seen the White Trash Cookbook? The pictures in it are hilarious, but the recipes are good. :)

Kelley, Jeremy is still at work, but he should be home in about a half hour. I'm sure that he'll be checking the soccer situation. I'm not into sports, so I don't know anything about it.

As I was writing this, Jeremy called me. He's on his way home. He got out of work early tonight (first time). He's probably just too excited to get home and see what's happening with soccer, lol. Or....maybe he's just excited because it's his last day of work for the next 14 days (vacation):D . It's probably soccer, though, lol.

Okay....you all are going to laugh at me, but keep in mind I live in barbeque land, fried chicken land...potato salad land.

Why do you eat mint jelly with lamb? Do you actually put it on the lamb? And does it still taste like mint? And onto this...what is rarebit? Is that related to (heaven forbid) a rabbit? Is just more rare?

Ugh, I feel like a dunce! lol....The most exotic foods we get around here are frog legs, and about 3 times a year we have a Rocky Mountain Oyster feed. Oh, but the town up the road about 20 miles has a turtle festival where they actually eat turtle all day. My daughter went last year...I swear to goodness I am telling the truth.

Oh my gosh, I feel so back country "hickish".

At one time, I worked with a much older woman at work that had real strong southern accent. (I think she was from Alabama). Anyway, I tried so hard to keep myself from laughing every time she talked me. I wasn't doing it to be mean, I loved her southern accent, but it was just so different from all the New Englanders.

I just read your post. Well, oysters (I love them) and turtle sound pretty exotic, lol.

I always eat lamb with mint jelly. I love it. I serve it with the lamb, and everyone can put it on their lamb if they want to. The mint jelly still tastes like mint and the combination tastes fantastic (to me). My parents always served it this way.

I made Welsh Rarebit last week. It's a cheese sauce made out of sharp cheese, beer, worshestershire sauce, dried mustard, flour and a dash of tobasco. I served it on top of toasted English crumpets, but most people put it over toast. My dad used to make it when I was young.

I think southern accents are sexy on women (ala gone with the wind)...maybe I'm just biased, but they don't help out guy's cause according to my female friends. Then again it's all about personal preferance. I'm from minnesota, and everyone thinks I have a funny accent, although the "midwest" is the blandest of accents. And no I don't say Booooat and Doncha Know like they do in the movie Fargo :)

Aww now you can't be from Minneeesssooooottaaa and not talk like that.......lol......kidding......I think it all depends on where the "Southern" accent comes from........some are very sexy on men.........but then others are horrible on both sexes. I grew up in Southeastern Missouri and in Tennessee.........when I moved to Tn everyone there said I talked funny, then when I moved back to SE MO everyone there said I talked funny. My SE MO accent I was very glad to lose. But I kinda liked the TN one :D. But alas I have been here in KS now for almost 12 years now, and have lost both. Except on the rare drinkfest with my friends......they of course get a big kick out of it.....lol.

I'm from the midwest, but I love country music. And I think that a slow, deep voiced southern accent coming from underneath a cowboy hat is very sexy! I'm not big on the "twangy" high-pitched southern accents, though. (Think Tim McGraw, Johnny Cash or Toby Keith - NOT HeeHaw! LOL!)

Well, Im from the midwest too, and Raveness tell me if you agree, I don't think we have accents! My thinking is, all the people on the television talk like me. Of course, I don't really hear how I actually talk, but I don't "think" we have an accent.

I have talked to a few people from the site on the phone, and I love southern accents. I love talking to Jules and Tru....I wish I could talk like them. And Stan has a really nice accent!

You know, its been a long time since we had that thread "Who have you talked to on Ageless". We start it that back up sometime, and exchange phone calls. *smiles*

Oh sure you have an accent Jo! Just like Katrina said wayyyy earlier in this thread, we all have accents.

Of course you don't hear your accent and you wouldn't think people in your local area have an accent because you are used to hearing them talk.

However, someone from another country would think you have an accent because you don't sound like the people they are used to hearing.

Even people from other states would say you have an accent, depending on the state. I am also from the Midwest.

Raveness... that SE MO thing is crazy, huh? My parents are from there... talk about country, rednecky, or hillbillyish-type talking. LOL!

My parents really do not have a southern accent to me but they do say crazy stuff. My Dad says "win-ders" for windows. My Grandmother says "it's comin up a cloud" when it's going to rain. She calls hangers "racks". The list goes on. :p

Oh... and a southern accent that I really loved was from this little guy in the movie "All the Pretty Horses". I'm telling you that guy had the awesomest accent ever...

Trying to get my head around "high-pitched" southern twang... Someone like Ricky Skaggs?

My first thought was Vince Gill, who has one of the cleanest pure tenor voices in country music but whos voice is so high-pitched that he sometimes has trouble finding even female voices to sing harmony behind him. Patti Loveless recently claimed she has to "stand on her tippy-toes" to do it...

Like 1Love said, to others it might sound like we have some sort of one, I would think maybe more of just how we say words than an accent though. So I am with you Jo, as far as a actual heard accent.......na I don't think we really have one either. :(

OK, as far as a midwestern accent - just saying the name of my state speaks volumes.

Wisconsin.

If you're from here, you say "wis-caahn-sihn" and it's very nasal.

I've heard it said more like "wis-cone-sin" from other parts of the country.

Midwestern accents can be very nasal and talk fast. Definately not drawn out like southern states.

No, more like old 50's country singers - usually the women. Very nasal.

Ricky Skaggs is from eastern Ky. He grew up about an hour east of where I went to college. Ky is not a southern state. In fact, Ky. is a border state, and in the corporation in which I work, it is considered a part of our Midwest Region. I'm gonna keep driving this point home. ;) :p

Melisa I love that...I think Im going to borrow "Its comin' up a cloud" when it looks like rain. Too cute!
I work with a guy Ive never met, he lives in North Carolina but also lived in other southern states before. He's got the absolute sexiest accent Ive ever heard. Perhaps its the combination of subtle differnces just sort of gathered from all those different places he's lived. Definitely Southern, just unique and verrrry sexy.
Personally, being a Northeast chick living in New York, I love mid-western and Southern accents. Anything different is sexy to me....and cowboy hats? OMG yeah!:D

My grandmother used to say some funny things now and again too. One thing I find myself borrowing from her a lot lately is "I ran out of gas". LOL she used to do sooooo much, taking care of everyone. Once in a while she'd say, "Nana is running out of gas", but she'd keep goin!
