Hi everyone! Remember me??...
Hope everyone is well and finding happiness in every aspect of life.
My work has been extremely hectic over the past few weeks, but at the same time massively rewarding. I thought I'd share with you guys a beautiful story about my work that has inspired me lately...
5 years ago in the centre of Rio de Janeiro a group of hooded off-duty police opened fire on a group of sleeping homeless children, for no apparent reason. These groups are known as 'death squads' and in this case they killed 8 kids, and injured many more. Others who were lucky enough to survive were taken under arrest, some tortured. Amnesty International caught wind of this atrocity and began to investigate and campaign for the rights of these children. I am proud to say that after countless hours and passionate dedication, 3 ex-military police officers have been held responsible and every child is now free from captivity. One of the surviving children wrote to us not long ago. Her name is Elisabeth Cristina, and I'm not ashamed to say that her kind words and warm spirit brought tears to my eyes - "Nobody cared for me except Amnesty International. For a while I got all these letters from someone called Amnesty and I was very happy. Then it was explained to me that it was not just one person, but lots of people around the world. Then I was even happier. You're like part of my family."
I feel uplifted everytime I think of this brave young girl. The names, faces and stories of such people are at the heart of our work, and to give freedom back to them is, quite simply, the greatest gift I have ever known.
I hope you can all draw from this and be as touched as I was. Thanks again for all your support.
