As you might know, I was very excited to have found a roommate who already had a flat in Hampstead._ Well...Weds. morning, she emailed me to let me know that she was returning to America._ So...no roommate, no flat._ And she just told me today that the flat will start renting on July 1, which is much to early for me._ The only good thing is that I was put in touch with another American who is coming over to work at ASL._ She & I seem to be a good match, but we'll have to find a flat, which will be a PAIN._ At least the school has now hired a woman who works in relocation to help the faculty find flats...and we won't get charged for her to do so (the school is paying for the service)._ So...looks like I don't really know where I'll be living once I arrive._ I never got rid of the reservation for the B&B in Marylebone so at least I have a place to stay from July 23 - Aug 1...and hopefully will have a place to live by then!_ Still...UGH!_ And that's it._ That's my vent for the day._

Liane, good you hadn't cancelled the B&B!!!

Finding a place in London, I heard, is really difficult but at least the school thought about that and is taking measures to help you.

How are your days right now? Having some fun before you start your new life?

Maybe just a general sidenote, because I am not sure what type of accommodation you are used to, but be prepared that flats/houses in London are literally shoeboxes ... - and they tend to overdo the carpet-usage, imo ;)

OK, this is a generalization, there are some great properties in London - but they tend to cost an arm and a leg, so if your arrangements are somewhat temporary, be mentally prepared for a potential culture shock .... ;)

Not meaning to scare you (or to offend any Londoners ^_^), though, it really depends on the situation and maybe your department is ensuring a good deal for you ... - but I kinda remember London as the rip-off capital of Europe when it comes to living conditions (even though I enjoyed my 4-5 years there ;) ) ....

Oh, I recognize that it's the second most expensive place to live in the world (or something like that). But it is expected and I'm being paid enough to compensate for it. I expect that the living quarters will be like those in NYC - small and expensive. But I'm getting London, so I just don't mind!

As for what I'm doing Maria - organizing my life here in Pa...where my dad lives. He's allowing me to store stuff, plus live until I move to London. At least I get to see my dog (who lives with my bro & sister-in-law).

That is a bummer! You were all set. Have you tried craigslist? If you are really in a bind, you could even do a sublet temporarily. You can also put an ad there for housing wanted.

Oh Patricia ... I LOVE CRAIG'S LIST ... I once found a great writing job on his site and I must admit, if you have a little time, there are some very amusing and interesting parts of the site. :)

I always say, everything happens for a reason Lianne. Sounds like even though you don't have a place to stay this minute that it will be taken care of by the time you need it.
