Yesterday, my boyfriend Hikmet, a native of Turkiye, received a letter from INS welcoming him as a permanent resident. His card will arrive in about a month.
It has been a long and arduous journey to get to this point because INS messed up his original residency-by-marriage paperwork and he had not removed the marital condition on his residency in time and was in danger of being deported. He filed a request for leniency and after waiting a year and a half was granted an interview at the conclusion of which he was told that he would get a letter of approval or denial.
Now, only a few weeks later (amazingly short time--usually it takes INS months or years to go from one step to the next), he has residency. Maybe they felt sorry for him since they bungled his paperwork. He also told them about how his criminal ex-wife screwed up his life, so that may have convinced them that he deserved his residency renewal.
However, they did not correct the misspelling of his first name which occurred years ago, so he has to call them about that. We are hoping that the correction will not delay his card. But, for now, we are totally happy. The insecurity about what would happen had really been stressing out both of us.
