What is your favorite instrument?

Why do you love it?

Okay, growing up (in Texas of course) I always loved the sound of a steel guitar. I still do.

As far as classical instruments, I love violins, cellos, and bassoons. I also really like baritone sax. I don't know why I like any of those instruments better than any others, I just do.

Edit: Okay, I realize you asked for just one favorite, plus a reason why it was my favorite, and I didn't really answer either question. Oh well.

Undoubtedly no one else here shares my preference for... the PIPE ORGAN!

There's a reason why they call it "the king of instruments." It is capable of soooo many nuances of tone color, and so many gradations of volume, and so many variations of texture (the number of musical lines and chords going on at once). An organist plays with both hands and feet, so more notes and musical lines are possible. The organ is difficult to play, and a classically trained organist must also learn to improvise in a variety of styles. It's truly admirable.

Pipe organs have a wide body of literature written for them, waaaay beyond the usual business of playing hymns and preludes in churches. However, to hear this other literature you need to go to organ recitals, buy CDs, or worship at a large church that has the funds to have a "real" organ and to hire a classically trained organist who plays stuff by organ composers like Bach, Buxtehude, Widor, Messiaen, etc. etc.

Pipe organs are custom instruments, no two alike. An organ builder studies the space where the instrument will be installed, does acoustical measurements, confers with the purchaser about budget, materials, etc., and then prepares a proposal. For a couple of summers, I worked for an organ builder and got to see the process from beginning to end. It's extremely complicated and never ceased to amaze me.

As for why I like the sound of the instrument--I'm not sure, maybe I was an organist in a previous lifetime! I have a primal, visceral response to it. It excites me in a strange mystical, sensual way. It's certainly not due to having heard any good organ music as a child... my church had a tiny electronic Hammond job, and the "organist" only played hymns on it.

I love piano.....maybe because I grew up as the daughter of an incredible pianist. I absolutely melt, though, when I hear someone play saxophone really well - it drives me crazy! I love it.
