Preservation Hall Jazz Band

Well, I think most americans, specially younger ones are not really into dixieland and classical jazz, but since I love it, I guess I have a good reason for hating the fact I'm not in the USA right now!

This is something I've gotta see someday, how I envy you people who live near New Orleans.

Hi Paul,

Ah, thanks for a tour down Memory Lane. I used to live 3 hours away from N'awlins and used to go about every 3 weeks. I'd sleep on a friend's floor and spend the rest of the time enjoying the French Quarter (but not Bourbon St - hate drunks!) Preservation Hall was one of my main stops. I've loved Dixie Land since I was a very small child. Grandpa used to play me his old 78 records. I fell in love with The Dukes of Dixieland and Pete Fountain and used to go to sleep to the strains of "Darktown Strutters Ball."

I'm currently listening to the Royal Crown Review, who do some kick a** swing. (Love that old music!) But I just hopped over to Amazon and bought a copy of "Pete Fountain Presents the Best of Dixieland." When I used to go to the Quarter there was a dude named Scotty who had a battered red upright piano on wheels that he would drag out and produce the most amazing Dixie Land. His lady wore a washboard strapped to her chest that she played with spoons (sometimes she just played the spoons) and the two of them could fill the street with sound and people dancing.

My favorite hangout however was O'Flaherty's Irish Channel Pub on Toulouse between Decatur and Chartes St. Danny O'Flaherty is Real Irish from Galway and has a voice sweeter than the angels. His brother Patrick can pick a mandolin like you've never heard and his partner plays a concert-size harp. They have Irish music ... the real deal, no Danny Boy, or The Unicorn Song. No Rebel songs either, war is not welcome here and if you support the IRA you have to drink elsewhere. :)

One night when I was there in their courtyard, Robby the Pipe Master was playing Hava Nagila, on the bagpipes while an Oriental party danced the Hora. That is New Orleans in a nutshell. It is a comfortable blend of many cultures, all of whom celebrate the others.

I hope you get to come to N'awlins some day, Paul. Everyone should have the opportunity. It is crowded, dirty, has it's own odor, is frequently wet, has high crime and even higher prices and I miss it every second of every day...

Peace,
Jane

Ps. If you go, don't drink the water it has about 100 carcinogens *after* they filter it!

Wow, and I'd be pleased to be there at least once in my life :)

I do have some 78 records here, but no player... lol
"The dukes of dixieland" are great. I only know 4 of Pete's songs.

Would you remember some more bands like Preservation Hall, Benko dixieland band, Storyville Jazz Band, etc?

We have a great 30 year-old dixieland band here called "Traditional Jazz Band Brasil", their drummer plays the washboard superbly. To be frank, I only prefer Preservation Hall to them, they are really good. I've seen their live shows at least a dozen times.

The only terrorist group I support are the BRTPCCW ... Brazilian rebels for total possession of chocolate cakes of the world.

It surely looks like quite an experience, I will someday, I'm sure I will, after all, I love dixie AND have a poodle called Duke Ellington.

Oh wow! Paulo, I would never have guessed you like dixieland!!! I am a big, big fan of jazz music and even play tenor saxophone myself!! Dixieland and Big Band are two of my most favorite sounds -- it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

One of my most cherished memories is the day my grandpa (a jazz trombonist) got me turned on to Glenn Miller when I was a little girl!

Hey, I play the piano and you play tenor sax... We only have to gather 3 or 4 more people and we have a band! That's a beginning :)
I love Big Bands too, I actually listen to "Sing, Sing, Sing" by B. Goodman everytime I'm either excited or blue... Serves both purposes.

May I ask you the same question??... Do you know some other good dixieland/ragtime bands like Preservation Hall?

Good to see you people still enjoy their music.

Take care!
Paulo

I'm a few minutes from the French Quarter/Vieux Carre'. Yes, you have to experince New Orleans someday with your musical taste. Some people visit and never want to leave. Some hate it...lol Walking in the Quarter you hear differant music echoing from the clubs or steet corners. Many great sounds are played and heard right in the Square in front of the St. Louis Cathedral, for all passersby to watch and listen.
