What would it have been?

What are your favorite names, for men and women?

I love Clara and Gabriel.

I also like Laura a lot... and Andrew (that's actually Jason's middle name and my sister Angélica should have been André...)

Oh boy the names I have always wanted besides CHERYL. I was teased as a child because my peers said my name sounded "so old". I remember the elegant sound of most of the girls' names in my classes. It did't help with my shyness either (which was quite terrible by the time I entered high school).
My father introduced me to my African/Native American history while I was young and after reading about that history there are several names I hold dear to me:

African: Amina Makeda Nandi Nefertit and Asantewa

Native: My grandmother was Cherokee:
Adgila (blossom) Amadahy (forest water)
Amitola (rainbow) and Galilahi (attractive)

For some reason LOL I really wanted the name Galilahi.

My son is Maalik Shabazz ( son who has come home)

If I had had daughters they would have been Shieeda or Nafera.

I love my name...Melisa...because it only has one "s". It makes a common name kind of unique.

I love the Spanish name Alejandra and my best friend's little girl's name... Tavi Mia...

For boys...

Liam

Caleb

The women in my family including my aunts and grandmas were named, Bertha, Myrtle, Mabel, Louisa, Letha, Hazel and Jeanette.
Considering those names, I count my blessing being named Mary.
Pheeeeeew My brother was John and my cousins, Diane, Karl, Tom, Kay and Ann. I guess we all lucked out !

I have always loved my name. Until I was 17, I never met another Katrina. My family sometimes calls me Trina for short, and I like that, too. So, I can't think of anything I would want to be named.

I always loved the name Rachael. Not spelled Rachel... it has to be Rachael. I wanted to name a daughter that so badly, but when my ex-husband remarried, he had a girl first, and he used that name. So, since my son already had a half-sister named Rachael, I couldn't very well name my daughter the same thing or he'd have two half-sisters with the same name. :p

Other female names I love:

Hannah (my daughter's name)
Samantha

I only have one favorite male name:

Michael -- both my husbands were named Michael LOL!! and my son's middle name is Michael, too.--LOL

And, of course, I love Romulus (Remi's real first name). :D

Female names I really like are

Shaynee ....... My daughter's name

Genevieve ...... My grandmother's name

Adrienne.... one of my daughter's middle names

Censi ...... one of my middle names

Male names:

Pete ....... My son's name

Steve/Steven........ in all its variations

Chris ....... :D

Laz ........

Kai ....... I like short names LOL

Oh Maan...I am right there with you! My dad's family came from Oklahoma -- Where my dad had the most normal name: Paul Truman

his brothers and sisters were:
Nina Vina
Vurva Mae
Willie Lou
Nile
John John (later: John)

....all-in-all I got pretty lucky with Kerri. I can tell you what last name I want! ;)

For kids names, we are slowly thinking of that...my only child, currently, is named Ethan.

I like Sofie... I had a dream the other night that we had triplets! AND I remember their names as Sofie, Sera and Anna....very odd to have had that dream....it was a complete scenario.

hmmm. Oh, well, my mom said if I were a boy I would have been named Keith. Not too bad if that would've been my name, I haven't know too many Keiths. But, I am happy to be female! I think Theo is happy for that too... ;)

I hated my name growing up. I was the ONLY Caramia in the entire state of Maine. I was picked on unmercifully because of it.
Ironically, now that I'm a "growned up", as my daughter says, I actually kind of like it. It's very romantic sounding.

But, had I been able to pick my own name, I would have gone with something simple like Maria or Anna. I always loved Lydia too.

Molly's post about Lydia reminded me of my family. All the woman on my maternal grandmother's side had old-fashioned names. First there was my great-great grandmother, Josephine. Her daughter, my great-grandmother was named Henrietta. Then, Henrietta had three daughters named Margaret, Lydia, and Lillian (my grandmother).

A little off track, but both my Aunt Margaret and my Aunt Lydia died suddenly in their tracks, literally. Aunt Margaret died as she was walking out of the bathroom of her house. Just dropped dead on the spot. And, her sister, my Aunt Lydia, dropped dead right in the checkout lane of Wal-mart. I kid you not!! What a way to go. Talk about shopping until you drop! My Aunt Lydia was such a funny lady... we always said that even she would have gotten a kick out of the way she went. :)

Kerri, your post about your Oklahoma relatives (Vurva Mae and Willie Lou) reminded me of my Aunt Lydia's son. His name was William Robert, but he was always known only as Billy Bob. But, of course, being from Ky., it was pronounced as if it were one long word..... Billybob altogether. :p

Katrina, you have a great name ;)

And, oh, I didn't mention that my mom is from Kentucky....
She, not so odd:
Jane Marie

but her brother:
Buddy.

just Buddy.

Her parents were Leo and Margaret, but she was somewhat raised by my great-grandmother Martha.
(rip: died in 1980 at 93 years old!)

My dad's mom was Cherry and his dad was Omer!

edit: I kinda like Billy Bob - theo? What do you think?

I have no clue what I would change my name to...Im going to have to think on that. We have a strange thing going on with the women in my family...

My grandmother was named Virginia. My mother's name is Georgia. My niece's name is Dakota. My daughter's name is Chelsea, which is in England. So, whether it was on purpose or not, every other female born into my family is named after a location (we have a small family), and I ended up with Joanne.

I have an aquaintance who recently named her daughter Nevaeh, which is actually Heaven backwards, and for some reason I really like that. Not to get too far off course with the thread, but do you all have any friends/relations with any really unusual names? My next door neighbor has a niece named Joplin, which I think is really unusual (after the singer, not the city! lol)

In keeping with the location theme, if I ever had another daughter, I planned on naming her Brooklyn. lol

I would have chosen Victoria for myself -- and when I was around 4 or 5, I tried to insist on being called by that name.

For a boy, I have always liked (both) my grandfathers' name: James. My other favourite is Timothy. (But not "Jim & Tim", LOL!)

For a girl, my maternal grandmother's name: Jessica. And I always liked the names Anthea and Leah. (Jeez -- I really go for those rhyming names!)

Maria, my paternal grandmother's full name was Alice Mary Andrew. I have no idea why she got a male name in the middle, since she did have an older brother.

I hated my name when I was growing up; I always wanted to change it. Now I love it and there's no other name I'd rather have.

As for males.....I named my first son Jeremy, and my husband's name is Jeremy. My next son was Christopher. My other two sons are Gabriel and Jordan. Oh....get this......my first son's name is Jeremy Michael. His father's (my first husband) name was Jerry. My second husband's name was Michael. Our first son was Christopher Jordan. Our next son was Gabriel Arynn. Our next son was Jordan Michael (I finally talked my ex into letting me name a son Jordan as a first name, lol). My current husband's name is Jeremy, but his family calls him Jery (pronounced jherrae in French). It seems like my son Gabriel is the only male in my life who has a name all to himself.

Paolo Roberto would be ok for me.

Hmmm . . . I've always said we should just call our children "Kid" until they're old enough to pick a name because no one ever seems to like what their parents pick for them and there always seems to be a stage where they want to be called something else or at least spell the name in a different way.

And I think some parents are so irresponsible in what they name their children. What are some of them thinking? They need to remember that whatever they choose they are saddling that child with at least until the child is old enough to do something about it. I know some people do change their names, but most people just live with the name they were given because by the time they are old enough to do something about it, everyone knows them by that name and they feel it is a hassle to change it.

LOL, maybe George Foreman has the right idea . . . just name them all the same thing!! :D

My name is Elizabeth and I have never gone by that name. It is a long name for a young child to learn and write and it is a mouthful for very young children to say. Fortunately for me, when my mom chose the name, she also chose a nickname to call me and I have always gone by that. But we have kept Elizabeth in the family too as that is my daughter's middle name and now the middle name of my new granddaughter.

It fits me.

I struggled so hard to find a name for my daughter.

I named my 29 year old son Jacob back when no one was named Jacob, now it is one of the most common boy names. I love Lucas and anything starting with a Z.

Speaking of names, when I lived in Germany I was amazed at all the names that were so "foreign" to me. I had a girlfriend named Weibka (pronounced veebkuh), a friend named Rudiger (pronounced rudiguh), and a friend named Jutta (you-tuh), who was married to Axel. There were many more unusual names, but I can't remember them right now.

I used to work with a Chinese woman named Chieko - (Chee ay ko). I thought that was a really pretty name. I also worked with a Filipino woman named Zenaida (zeh ny duh) Lahawn; I thought that was a pretty name.

I love the name Lucas, too.

St Lucas was a physician, some say he had learned a lot of his art with the Essenians and I have read a book, Doctor of Men and Souls (this is a translation from its title in Portuguese, I don't know how it was called in English), which described a very esoteric Lucas.

He never met Jesus, but wrote what many consider the best of the Gospels, where we find many stories that are not present in the other three gospels. He stayed with St Paul until his death, and met Maria and St John, from whom he collected many of the stories. He was Greek and died around 84 years old.

He was the apostle who talked more about Jesus’ concerns and care towards women, and the only who described Jesus’ episode with Mary Magdalene. He also talks matter of factly about St Peter's being married. No big deal.

I love this name and love this saint. ;) He's the patron (?) of the physicians, too.

My aunt married a man whose family name was Chiquito da Silva. She hated his family name, first because da Silva is like the most common name ever in Brazil, and then Chiquito sounds so ridiculous. Poor auntie, she had no option at that time.

Well, this is an interesting thread! Shewolf....what an unusual name you have! And Molly, your name is Caramia? Cool!

If I could pick a name for myself, I would be Kye. My real name is Laura.

My favorite girls name is Tess, which I used for one of my daughters. My parents wanted me to name my last daughter after one of our Finnish relatives....cept her name was Hedvig Serafia. The Serafia part is ok, but (and forgive me if anyone here is named Hedvig....) but I didn't really care for the Hedvig part. Needless to say, my youngest girl is NOT named after any of our relatives in Finland.

Two funny names I've come across....Pokey Pekar...no kidding, and then I saw the name Harry Bunsucker once in the obits. And then I have a good friend named Gay....she dated a man with the last name of "Love". She didn't want to end up being "Gay Love". She changed her name to Gayle. :)

Kye, my ex-husband's grandmother came to visit us from Germany for 3 months each year, and her name was Hedwig (pronouced Hedvig in German). I thought it was a funny name...it sounded like we were calling her Head Wig (like a wig for someone's head) whenever we introduced her to people here in the U.S.

My father's middle name was Shalom. I find that interesting, as I've never heard of anyone else with that name. I didn't know about his middle name until I was in my 30's or 40's. The name suited him; he was the most peaceful man imaginable.

I never liked my name as a child, because anyone else I had ever met with the name JUANITA was an old woman. But now I love my name.

I love my mother's name--Sylvia Leora

My sister--Laurita Marie

My maternal grandmother--Ora Leona

My husband loves my whole birth name--Juanita Lee Isabell

People often ask me if I am Spanish, and the answer is...no.

But I do have a Spanish sounding name.

I love my children's names.

Matthew--from God

Amanda Elean--beloved

Sarah Jane--princess

I also love the name Warren (my uncle).

When I was born my mother wanted to name me Cynthia Elizabeth. I hate the name Cindy! No offence to anyone named Cindy. But that name does not suit me at all! I am glad my father picked my name.

I always wanted the name Victoria. But I will stick with my name. Juanita. When the Australians say it they pronounce the "T" very clearly. It makes it sound much different, like music.

Ima Lou
Vera Jo
Violet Rose (my mom said, Well, she was so beautiful and I love flowers!!! I said be glad she didn't name you Petunia Daisy, it could have been worse!)
Troy (not so bad but combined with) EARL!!!
Donna Ruth

then me :) I was named after my mom's sister who died in childbirth and it is pronounced Janie but spelled with 2 n's. Okay growing up, you would think that people would misprounouce it as Jan nie, but no, they would say JANICE?? or Janine?? Never got that one.

___________

I have a Jessica Trish, but I knew what it meant. I wanted my kids names to mean something and be Hebrew.

They are :
Rachel Lauren (beautiful lamb of God)
Jessica Marie (Gift of God)
Jonathan Francis (francis is his dad's name) Beloved Protector

They all have grown into the meanings of their names.
