Fireflies or Lightning Bugs?

The other day my boyfriend and I went into Ohio to SCUBA dive. As we were leaving in the evening we saw those bugs that light up.

He calls them fireflies and I call them lightning bugs. His friends that were with us, also from Canada, called them fireflies too.

I told him it must be a regional thing to call them fireflies vs. lightning bugs and vice versa.

What do you call them and what where are you from?

I call them lightning bugs and I'm in the Southeastern US.

So funny this q came up now! For a work-related thing, I need to know the answer to this from someone who lives in the deep South--Georgia, Alabama, around there. Anyone?

Is Florida considered the deep south?

I've never heard anyone in Florida call them fireflies. I'm in Florida and I always called them lightning bugs.

(they don't get fireflies -- or locusts! -- in England)

Have you introduced him to chipmunks yet? I had a friend of mine from Australia who was here for university... she couldn't get over them. Thought they were the most adorable animals on the planet -- and she's from the country with koalas! :)

Living in Maryland. Born and raised in New York. My son (the science little guy) and I call them lightning bugs. Hey being a Mom is never ending as many of us can attest: my twelve year-old still takes the big old mason jars and catches the lightning bugs in them. Just holds them all night (LOL had to remove them from his bedroom one night and out the front door) and looks at the whole jar light up.
A nice summer time activity for the adults too. Just catching them in the jar makes you giggle.!!!
