I'm in California and my friend from Washington and I were talking....I say
SODA and she calls it POP...what do you call it?

PinkPanther_04

Coke! :D

Okay, if I had to choose one of those I'd say soda, but most Texans I've ever known just call it coke, no matter what brand it is.

Soda Pop.

Growing up it was Soda Pop.

Here it is just soda.

I call it Soda or Pepsi or Coke.....my Mom's parents who grew up in South Dakota call it Pop.......I always thought it was a grandparent thing to say.

It's pop here. But if I'm around anyone who's not from around here, I switch it to "soda" because I know that's a regional thing and I don't want to look like a complete townie.

But when I was down south, it was very disconcerting to hear the cashier at Arby's ask me what kind of "Coke" I wanted.

Coke is Coke. It's a brand name. Sprite is not Coke, nor is Mello Yello. Coke is the brown, caramely-flavored one. I guess it's like referring to all tissues as Kleenex, even though there are other brands such as Puffs or whatever.

Pop here. I know it's dumb, but soda sounds so old-fashioned. Like the soda fountain.

Okay in England we just call our 'soda' or 'pop' by it's name...so if it's Coke then we call it Coke or if it's Tango then we say Tango.

Here in the southern tip of Africa we call it by the brand and our lemonade is lemon flavoured soda water and not made from lemons. :-)

Thats exactly what I was thinking.

It's funny because I have no clue what Mello Yello is...it kind of rings a bell because I was back east for a while. And Meena...what is Tango? Is that equal to our Tang maybe?

I love that even lemonade is different....awesome!

Mello Yello's another soft drink that has a citrus flavor. Kind of like a tamed down Mountain Dew I think...

I haven't had it in years, since they left racing as a sponsor...

Mello Yello is called Moutain Dew in California at least. Or is it something different? I've never heard of Mello Yello.

Naw, they're different things. We've got them both, though I've never actually had a Mello Yello.

I kind of remember it when I was touring the US in 97/98...but don't think I ever drank it.

I see. Thanks for the clarification. Since I've never had Mountain Dew, I don't see myself ever trying Mello Yello. But I'm not much of a soda drinker. I probably drink about 5 diet sodas per year, total.

We say pop here. Although, my mom is from Ontario, and she never says pop, she always just says "Coke".

My dad, who was raised in England, says pop, and sometimes soft drink.

When I was younger my friend's dad said "sodey-pop" and we thought that was funny.

You know what's weird? Here in Vancouver we say, "Oh, I had too much pop, I need to use the washroom." But if we go like 20 minutes south of here into the US, they'd say, "What's pop? What's a washroom?" Actually, they might know pop... but washroom is restroom down there, and no one seems to have heard of a washroom! I was in San Jose California last year and asked where the washroom is, and the lady looked at me all confused and said, "What do you need to wash?" Hahahahaha!

Well up here in these here parts....Mello Yello is Coke's answer to Pepsi's Mountain Dew. I can't tell the difference, hate them both....but Mountain Dew is a Pepsi thing. Or brand, or whatever.

They're both yellow over-caffeinated icky things.

P.S. Now I'm wondering. So if you go to a Coke-branded soda fountain in California, like in a fast food restaurant where you can fill your own soda, what is their answer to Mountain Dew called? They must have one. People who like Dew are usually Dew-aholics, so everybody's got to have one.

And does anybody else have Sierra Mist? It seems Pepsi dumped 7-Up here and created their own, "Sierra Mist." It's exactly like Sprite.

I love sierra Mist.. it's better than sprite.... although I still see seven up.....

It's soda here. We used to have Mello Yello, I liked it better than Mountain Dew. We also have Sun Drop, also citrus and has floating pieces of stuff in it...LOL. I don't drink any of these, but I did when I was a kid.

My northern relatives that live in Michigan, say pop.

I like Sierra Mist also and I think it is better than Sprite. We still have 7-up here as well.

That's exactly how it was for me growing up in Kentucky. I now live across the river in Indiana and it's the same here, too. At least in the southern part of Indiana, it is.

My ex-husband is from Michigan and they always called it soda. That kind of stuck with me so now I tend to call it soda.

BTW, Mello Yello was missing from the stores for a while, but they have brought it back. It is definitely a different drink than Mountain Dew, although similar.

These are fun threads. :)

I was born and spent my early childhood in NYC--we just called it soda, or by whatever brand name your chosen soda happened to be.
Later, we moved up to New Hampshire where alot of my friends referred to it as "TONIC"
That always made me think of some old fashioned medicine or like, Hair Tonic!!!!! I used to tease my best friend about that constantly.
There is a brand of soda available up there called Moxie, its been around longer than Pepsi or Coke, and I read that in 1920 it actually outsold Coke.
I believe it was originally created as a medicinal drink, but then caught on as a soft drink.
I love the packaging, but boy I have to tell you the taste just doesnt do it for me----its like, carbonated cough medicine!!! UGH!
