Postcards for Ryan

Ryan Tomoff is a 9 year old boy who has been admitted to to Georgetown to begin another round of chemotherapy for his Leukemia. He can't have visitors and has become depressed (who wouldn't?) His parents are requesting cards and letters (no bigger than a number 10 business size envelope) so that he can "see" other places and "meet" other people.

This is real -- not just another internet hoax. My mother-in-law worked with Ryan's mom, Terri, and said she's trying to hold up through all of this. Having the cancer flair up again is not good. Treatment is painful and at this time they have no prognosis...they are taking it day by day.

If you could send Ryan just a little postcard from where you live he would love it. It might be his only chance to see what other cities look like. Yes, I'm being dramatic, but his condition is very serious.

His address is:
Ryan Tomoff
PO Box 3684
Crofton MD 21114-3684

If you can read Adobe Acrobat documents, you can read more at: Ryan Tomoff (http://www.swnebr.net/newspaper/images/articles/tomoff.pdf)

Summer is the perfect time to send postcards since many of us have more time... it's noted, a postcard from Europe will be on this cutie's way! :) And prayers, too...

Jane....what an amazing woman you are. Such a big heart. I will send him something and I passed this on to my nephews and nieces (9 of them!!) several of them a few years younger/older than he is.

Bless his heart. Thanks for letting us know about him and letting us share in this act of goodwill.

Well, Marianne...what can you do when you get a letter from your mother in law asking you to send a postcard to a very sick child? She had no idea that I have access to people who literally live all over the world. Can you imagine how pleased Ryan will be to get postcards from other countries as well as other states? Knowing that people care about you is crucial in beating cancer. I can't help but think that a few extra prayers might work as well.

Some postcard ideas for Ryan are:
Stadiums - major and minors, etc.
Arenas - major and colleges, etc.
Teams - major leagues, minor leagues
Theme parks
Colleges / Universities
Dogs
Landmarks from Cities around the country
Anything funny for a 9 year old boy!

Hi Nessa,

Don't diss Balimore. LOL You have a world class aquarium, a great zoo and the Orioles. And you can't assume that he has ever been there because he's only 9 and has been sick. A postcard from your vacation would be nice too. I can only imagine how excited he must get when the mail comes. Cancer treatment is not fun (note the tube in his chest in the bottom picure) so any distraction is a welcome one.

Thanks to everyone who is sending cards and praying.

Peace,
Jane

Wow, this is great! Thanks for making it a sticky.

Postcards from all over will certainly make him smile. How nice it is to have a bunch of friends like you guys. :D

Dragonfly, it's a great lesson for your daughter. Here before they run a movie at the theater they collect for the Jimmy Fund. It is a charity to support the fight against cancer in children and adults at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I'm always saddened by the number of parents who don't take the opportunity to show their children how to donate to charity. I know my mom taught me never to pass up any chance to help someone. It's been good advice, because it got me a wonderful husband. :)

Thanks again, everyone!

Jane,

I'd be happy to send a postcard to him.

If he gets just a minute of enjoyment from anything any of us send, that will be more than enough payment for the little effort it takes.

Hi Jane:
Heart so big. My twelve year-old son would like to send some post cards to Ryan. As you all may know I am here in Baltimore. Have some great ones to send. Plus my son was fortunate enough to go to Disney last last and collected some great cards he could send.

My prayers are with him!!!
