Thongs or Sandals?????
I know both refer to the shoe, but I always have said sandal....not thong. What do you guys call it???
I was talking to my cousin and she was telling me this story, and she said thong...well of course I'm thinking G-string kinda thong...but she was talking about the shoe. I got so confused that she had to tell me the whole story again!!

Ok....at least in Minnesota....sandals USED to be called thongs, when I was a child. Then as we all know, a certain annoying type of "underwear" was popularized that resembled the top of a thong sandal.....so nobody called those flimsy shoes "thongs" anymore, lest somebody think you were totally out of it and were wearing underwear on your feet, or that you were totally out of it and didn't realize that thongs were now underwear.
Hate thongs, love sandals. Now we just call them flip-flops though.

If it has the thing that goes between your toes it's a thong. If not, it's a sandal.

We call the inbetween toe kind FlipFlops due to the noise they make... Some still call them thongs but since the advent of the swimwear thong means a cozzie...

Flip Flops.
But sometimes there might be a particular brand, so they're called "Reefs" or "Rainbows" or whatever. That might be a California thing though.

Flip flops or sandals....thongs just remind me of a girl bending over in "low rise" jeans with her 'thong' hanging out the top.

OH! Flip-Flops!!! forgot about that one, hardley ever use that term. Everytime I hear the word thong i always think of that stupid 'Thong Song' that the one rapper guy sang. Man, he ruined it for us!!! Now everytime I wear one, I feel like a hoochie!! LOL Of course mine never stick out or anything, I hate that when girls let them stick out in the open.
But I always say sandals....whether their is a strap between my toes or just a shoe thats exposing my toes....its all sandal to me. :-)

Sandals are open toe shoes that do not have that thing in the middle that seperate your big toe from the second toe.
The shoes that have that middle thing for the toe are thong sandals. But I don't usually call those thongs when speaking to others as I realize many would think I was speaking of the underwear thongs.
Then there are flip flops. These are open toe shoes that may be thongs or many not and do not have a strap on the back on your heel to keep them from making that flip flop noise when you walk.

Same where I live. But, thongs are also synonymous with "flip flops".
BTW, I found this definition of "thong" in the Merriam Webster's dictionary as it pertains to shoes:
"a sandal held on the foot by a thong fitting between the toes and connected to a strap across the top or around the sides of the foot"

I do notice that on shoe websites they call open-toed shoes sandals.
