Codeine. And a heating pad.
MerAlove23 09-10-2004, 04:03 AM Thanks Guys!!!!
Scarlett I wish I could take those.. I'm allergic.... :(
this is the WORST ONE i've ever felt... :(
Silver I know.. Picking him up right now feels like he's 100 lbs :(
ahh well.. i'm going to try the motrin!!
ScarletHawke 09-10-2004, 02:08 PM I'm sorry you're allergic to codeine, Mera. Seriously, that's the only thing I've ever had that could touch my period cramps. Here in Canada, we can get Tylenol 1's with codeine over the counter -- I guess you can't do that in the States. Bummer.
I've had horrible period cramps since I was 12. I mean bad, like writhing in bed, squealing in pain, only getting up to go to the bathroom and vomit type of bad. More than once I've had to sit on the toilet with a bucket in front of me as everything in my stomach took the shortest route out. "Two exits, no waiting!" Next day I'd be fine... but only after I'd gone through hell.
I was like that every. Single. Month. Till I was about 19 or 20, and I scared the living bejeezus out of my college roommate who drove me to the hospital convinced I was gonna die. (I was too out of it to argue with her.) I got seen relatively fast in Emergency, and the doctor checked me for a twisted uterus (which I didn't have), and then said, "My God, are you like this every month?!"
I said Yes, and he said, "Why on earth has no one put you on birth control?" I replied, "Because no doctor has ever seen me like this before, and they didn't understand me when I tried to tell them how bad it could get."
Then this sweet, wonderful physician walked up, held my hand, looked straight into my eyes and said, "I promise you this. I'm going to put you on birth control today, and you will never have to suffer like this again."
I was soooo happy someone finally believed me that I started crying out of sheer relief. From that point on, I totally understood how some women could fall in love with their doctors. I could've kissed him.
He was right, too. Since I've been on birth control, it's never been that bad again. Sometimes it's bad if I've had to switch brands or something, but never has it been as bad as before.
So anyway Mera, I hope you're feeling better -- and trust me, it could be worse. ;)
PinkCat 09-10-2004, 02:21 PM Ooh... I've had cramps so bad that it made me vomit from pain. Oh, that's just awful. For me it was a lot worse when I was a teenager than now.
Here's what I found: Codeine, like Scarlet suggested is number one. But poor Mer is allergic... that's really too bad. :( The next best thing is Advil -- and LOTS OF IT. I found the earlier you take it, the better... like, heading it off at the pass is easier than trying to kill the pain once it starts. Midol is good too. Apparently Aleve (which we don't get here in Canada, so I've never actually tried it) is also very good.
Good luck. :( I hope you feel better soon.
MerAlove23 09-10-2004, 02:37 PM Oh Scarlett... your saying EXACTLY HOW I AM FEELING... LOL
I have had my period since I was 10 years old... and I got on the pill at 18 years old... so now I forgot what these feel like.....I can't WAIT to start my pills on Sunday!!!!!! so this should be my last bad period... but I have to get thru this somehow this is only my second Day!!!!

Cheryl 09-17-2004, 05:43 PM Hi Merlove:
Awww, hope that your cramps are better and How is that handsome baby boy? Good I hope.
Had surgery in July (7 weeks ago) so I will no longer have to worry about cramps. When I did have to worry about them though I took: 550mgs of Naproxen sodium. It knocked them right out and I usually only had to take one a day.
Good luck.

Midol PMS formula and a beer.
Or, umm, sex, actually. The big 'o' increases circulation down there. *laugh* But make sure he doesn't leave ya hanging - having the female equivalent of blue b***s is sure to make you feel worse.
Also, check with the person at the best local health food store you can find. Dong Quai is good for regulating and encouraging blood flow. There should be several herbal tea formulations to choose from.
BTW: Congrats on the newborn!

Sex does make it feel better temporarily. But within about an hour the cramps are back, so while it's entertaining, the effects don't last all day.
Personally, I think it's got more to do with the release of endorphins than increased circulation.
Barbra 09-19-2004, 10:58 PM Diet is huge. Stay away from cookies, candies, and refined carbs, too much protein, and fried and fatty foods. Also, caffeine, colas, alcohol and chocolate should be avoided. I know that these are probably all the things you crave, but they make it so much worse. If your cramps are at least partially the result of constipation (how old is the baby? are you regular yet?) then you may want to consider having some fruit on an empty stomach for breakfast. Fiber and the B complex vitamins ease constipation.
As far as hot water bottles and heating pads, apply them to your lower back. That could help. Sex? Definitely. Even though the relief is temporary, it's still relief. I say any excuse for sex is a good one!
Exercise, even though that's probably difficult now, can help. Have you been cleared for exercise yet? If you have, try something simple in ten minutes increments. Using the baby as a weight (as long as you feel confident about not dropping the baby!) can be fun and energizing for both of you.
I hope you feel better soon.
MerAlove23 09-20-2004, 12:16 PM hMMM.. I never heard of Sex helping... but since it wears off fast.. I must have more sex... not a bad excuse I guess to have it :)
next period I hope my cramps subside!!! I can't wait for my Pill to kick in!!
ScarletHawke 09-21-2004, 06:14 AM Gah, just got slammed with cramps early this morning. My own fault though -- I was craving salt for the past couple of days and I gave in without realizing how close I was to my period. By the time I realized that my red-haired aunt Flo was due for a visit, I'd eaten a small bag of chips and several baby cucumbers dipped in sea salt. Heh...oops...
I tried to compensate last night by drinking extra water, but no dice. Fortunately I had some codeine on hand.
But the worst thing is that my heating pad conked out on me this morning!!! It's an old pad and I guess one of the inner wires developed a loose connection. Man, talk about bad timing!
Desperate because the drugs were just barely taking the edge off, I heated up some milk in the microwave and added a lot of cinnamon and a tsp of sugar to mask the taste. I didn't really expect it to help much -- but lo and behold! After two cups I'm feeling much better! I don't know if it's anything to do with the warm milk or whether my codeine has finally kicked in (although I took it over an hour and a half ago), but I just thought I'd share and see if it helps anyone else. :)
MerAlove23 09-21-2004, 07:59 AM Ohhh Scarlett I'm so sorry.... These totally stink.... how come we are always the ones that go thru these changes and pain???? Periods, menopause, pregnancy... jeezz it's not fair.. :(
