Poll: Musicals -- Love 'em or Hate 'em?

From The Music Man, South Pacific and The Sound of Music to Cats, Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera...

They're so easy to bash, so overdone, a parody just waiting to happen -- but still so popular! What is it about musicals that inspires either derision or delight? Take the poll and discuss.

Yep, like 'em...

Have seen Phantom of the Opera 8 times. 7 in Toronto, once in Pittsburgh...

Seen Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in Toronto as well...would like to see Les Mis. I have the Anniversary show...where they have all the different Val Jean's singing, "Do you Hear the People sing.

Well, I happen to enjoy them, but at the same time they make me crack up. I love 'Hello Dolly' and 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'. I don't really watch them with anyone because its a little embaressing....

you know I like musicals but, I have only been to 2 . The frist one was Annie when I was about 8 or 9 yeras old and then i saw the Lion King with my husband a nd kids about 3 or 4 years ago.
I like musicals my husband is not wild about them so, needless to say we don't go to many.
I am geeting tickets to the Christmas show at Rockfeelr for Christmas whether hubby likes it or not. I wan't to expose my kids to all different things this way they can choose what they enjoy.

I guess you could say I like musicals. I've seen:

On Broadway:
- Cabaret (loved it!)
- Beauty and the Beast (fell asleep - hadn't really slept in a couple of days)
- Sunset Boulevard (same as above but would have fallen asleep no matter what - boring!)

Touring Productions:
- Les Miserables (really, really good. And it was a matinee!)
- Jesus Christ Superstar (a long time ago)
- Phantom of the Opera (also a long time ago. I remember it being good)

High School Shows:
- Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
- Oklahoma!
- Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (I was in the chorus and had to dance with a dorky guy who was "in love" with me  )
- Hello Dolly! (chorus again. I got to wear a ridiculous green vintage dress! :D )
- Into the Woods (I ran lights and built sets)

And if we're counting Rocky Horror, I saw that in Greenwich Village when I was 16. What a blast! :D

i love musicals. but then, i'm a HUGE dance fan. i danced when i was young, and my daugher is really into dance. she would really like to make performing of some kind her profession.

haven't gotten to actually see any that were broadway, or broadway tours yet though. have seen basically every one that is on tape and several local company productions.

and even though they aren't technically musicalls, there is also the countless dance productions of my daughter's i've been involved in

My name is Whiterose and I love musicals. There I said it. :p

I was raised watching musicals. My mother loves them. And I think her interest probably had alot to do with how I feel about them.

I'll never forget when The Sound of Music came out. I was 7 years old. We took a mom/daughter day out together and this was back in the days when you could stay in the movie theaters and see the movie again and again. We sat in that theater for hours watching it over and over again. It is still my all-time favorite musical.

There are so many that I love that I can't possibly name them all, but here are a few ;) .........

Jesus Christ Superstar
Man of La Mancha
Annie Get Your Gun
Showboat
The Music Man
Carousel
Godspell
South Pacific
Oklahoma!
The Wizard of Oz (yes, that's a musical)
Singing in the Rain
Fiddler on the Roof
Camelot
A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum
Grease!
The King and I
My Fair Lady
Oliver!
West Side Story

Musicals rock. I would've given anything to see Hugh Jackman bring down the house in "The Boy From Oz." So many other great shows come to mind, that I won't bore anyone with my fave list. If you haven't seen one, make it a priority :)
