ScarletHawke 10-01-2004, 10:18 PM No, this isn't a thread about whacking people with big sticks. Goldenhawke and I decided that if the Poetry and Literature section could have a Book Club, we would start a Beat Club. Our plan is as follows.
Every two weeks, a member of the Beat Club chooses three (3) tunes from a single artist. That member then posts links to those songs on this thread so that they will be accessible to the other members. Everyone in the Club listens to the chosen tunes and posts their comments -- and gets the Ageless party started! :)
Golden and I have decided that for now, we'll restrict the Beat Club to a maximum of 10 members so that this thread doesn't get too unwieldy. As one of the Music Mods, I'll step up and host the first two weeks. But once the Beat Club gets going, we'll randomly select the next member so that everyone will get a turn to host their own two-week segment!
So who wants to join the Beat Club? There's 10 places available -- so post or PM us if you're interested, BYOB (Bring Your Own Beats), and join the Par-TAY!
Goldenhawke 10-01-2004, 10:20 PM FAQ -- Frequently Asked Questions about the Beat Club
Q: Are you sure there are no sticks involved?
A: Definitely no sticks. The thread's about music.
Q: What about other blunt objects?
A: You're just not getting this, are you?
This post will address all the frequently asked questions about the Beat Club. As questions get asked and answered later in the thread, I'll copy 'em up here. In the meantime, PM Scarlet or me if you have any questions you'd like answered & added to the FAQ.
Woo! Finally a real question!
Q: I'd like to join the Beat Club, but I don't know how to post links to the music files.
A: That's not really a question, but I'll answer it anyway: don't worry about it, sign on up. We'll work something out, even if we have to find the songs ourselves.
ScarletHawke 10-01-2004, 10:28 PM Golden and I would like to welcome The Jerrmeister as the newest member of the Beat Club!
Welcome Jerry! :D
Goldenhawke 10-06-2004, 09:46 PM Hey guys, just so you know we're not full up yet, we still have something like 7 spots open. Join away! PM Scarlet or me! :)
Goldenhawke 10-07-2004, 04:44 PM Letting everyone know: I've updated the FAQ above.

Woo! Great Sally! And yeah, you can have non-poultry drumsticks as long as you promise to keep 'em away from the other members. ;)
And as for the rest of you, there's still spaces available! First come first served!

ScarletHawke 10-12-2004, 07:43 PM Welcome aboard, Fos! :)
I think we'll soon have this up and running!
ScarletHawke 10-13-2004, 01:14 PM Goldenhawke and I talked about this, and I'd like to make an announcement:
THE BEAT CLUB OFFICIALLY OPENS THIS SATURDAY! http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/banger.gif
Please note: We still have three (3) spaces available, so if you've been pondering whether to join or not, you have till Friday night to post or PM us. Thanks!
bella belle 10-13-2004, 01:18 PM I'd like to join but I have a question first.
This will all be done weekly, correct? I'd hate to join and then be gone for a while but this really is interesting to me as I'd get to discover new music, hopefully. The thing is, I will be gone for over three weeks. I'll be back in the middle of November. Does it matter?
ScarletHawke 10-13-2004, 01:27 PM Actually Bella, it will be biweekly (every two weeks), not weekly. Golden and I thought that only one week might not be long enough for everyone to listen to the three selections and post about it. We realize people have other commitments.
As for your vacation in November -- it shouldn't really matter except maybe you'll miss one member's selections for two of the three weeks you'll be away. But everyone will have a chance to host their musical selections, so you can just let us know when you'll be available to host yours.
Hope that answers your concerns. :)
bella belle 10-13-2004, 01:37 PM Okay great, then I'm all for joining! :)
I will be gone October 19- November 15.
ScarletHawke 10-13-2004, 01:57 PM Okay, so that leaves two (2) spaces left before Saturday!
Welcome aboard Bella!
I feel lucky to have found this when I did. I am a music freak, are there still spots left???

Are we starting this tomorrow? Who's first batter up?
Goldenhawke 10-15-2004, 07:24 PM We'll be starting this weekend, hopefully tomorrow; first batter up will be our ever-lovely Scarlet, so we can see how this'll work.
ScarletHawke 10-16-2004, 07:29 PM The Beat Club has officially started. Woo! :D
I'm ScarletHawke, and I'll be your host for the next two weeks. This session's musical selection is the following:
Artist: Ashley MacIsaac (he's male, not female)
Album: Hi(tm) How Are You Today?
Songs:
The Devil in the Kitchen
Sleepy Maggie (with vocalist Mary Jane Lamond)
Brenda Stubbert
Background Info:
Ashley MacIsaac is an extremely talented Maritime fiddler from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. This album was made in 1995 when he was in his early twenties. The first track, Devil in the Kitchen, was very popular with college-age kids across Canada when it came out. I remember everyone dancing to it at the nightclubs. (Okay, when I say "dancing", I mean "jumping up and down really fast".) :)
The second track "Sleepy Maggie" is sung in Gaelic. For a translation of the lyrics, click here. (http://www.geocities.com/celticlyricscorner/compilations/celticmoods.htm#sleepy)
The third track is just plain cool, IMHO. But don't take my word for it... listen and see for yourself.
Links below. And remember, let us know what you think! Enjoy!
Devil in the Kitchen (http://raptor.golden.net/~silverbow/mp3/The%20Devil%20in%20the%20Kitchen.MP3)
Sleepy Maggie (http://raptor.golden.net/~silverbow/mp3/Sleepy%20Maggie.MP3)
Brenda Stubbert (http://raptor.golden.net/~silverbow/mp3/Brenda%20Stubbert.MP3)
I love Sleepy Maggie; Mary Jane Lamond is awesome! I have this song on a compilation, but I haven't heard the entire album.
The Devil in the Kitchen- I would really have to be in the mood for it, but I can definitely see how it would be a favorite at certain clubs!
Brenda Stubbert- I agree, it sounds pretty darn cool! The fiddling at the end is amazing!
Unfortunately, the speakers on my computer aren't very good. So I know that there are going to be a lot of elements in these songs that I won't hear. :(

Just to respond to the Celtic vibe comment -- yeah, that area of the Maritimes is very Scots-Irish. Several people speak Gaelic as a second language and Celtic fiddling is a huge pastime.
To give you an idea of the culture -- on the back of the CD jewelcase is a full-length pic of Ashley Maclsaac. He's wearing a lumberjack jacket, a black t-shirt, work boots, hockey socks... and a kilt. :)
ScarletHawke 10-17-2004, 12:38 PM If you run out of coffee in the morning, play this song nice and loud. Wakes you up real good. ;)
For some reason I can't use the hyperlinks that direct me to the songs. Can you type out the web addy for me please?
Thanks

First off, this is such a great idea. I love music, I have traveled overseas to go to concerts. I am a freak!
The Devil in the Kitchen:
Holy Cow!! There really is a devil in the kitchen and he is stomping out a fire. Lots of energy, and something I can see listening to on my way out for the night to pump everyone up.
Sleepy Maggie:
This was my favorite song. I don't even want to know the translation of the Gaelic, it's pretty as it is without knowing.Very pretty voice.
Brenda Stubbert:
This reminded me of Enigma a bit, but in a Celtic/Rock sense. I have a Celtic CD, I can't remember the name of the group but it reminded me of this. Very old world meets new world tech/rock.
Loved them Scarlet!!!!!! Good Job!!!!!! :D
ScarletHawke 10-19-2004, 10:24 AM I'm glad everyone likes them so far! Thanks!
ScarletHawke 10-20-2004, 10:49 AM Hi Nerdz -- did you try the other links that Goldenhawke posted for Red? Those should work.
ScarletHawke 10-20-2004, 10:51 AM Your new avatar is adorably evil! I love it! :D

Man, that's a bummer. I don't even know if you can find it online -- it's on the obscure side. Rather than spend days hunting it down, I just ripped the tracks from my CD and put it online that way.
I can't figure out why it doesn't work for you when the other tracks do. Is anyone else having a similar problem?
Maybe Dan can help with the link or something.
Hey Scarlet, thanks regarding my avatar. Do you think I can get away with it year round??? Maybe not............

Hey Scarlet, thanks regarding my avatar. Do you think I can get away with it year round??? Maybe not............
It's probably best if we ask Golden since he's the one who helped me rip the tracks (he's on campus right now but I'll email him).
As for your avatar, I personally wouldn't have a problem with it all year round, but I can't speak for everyone on the forum. ;)
Edit: Just emailed Goldenhawke, and I also PM'd Dan for good measure.
I keep forgetting to ask, how did you get that cool signature? I noticed a lot of people have this and I must have missed a thread regarding it.

Actually, there's no thread about it. One of the members on Ageless found some nifty graphics freeware and has been experimenting with it. They offered to make some sigs for Golden and me, so we took up the offer. They do look really good. :)
I'm reluctant to post who it is publicly as I don't think they'd want to be swamped with requests, but I'll let them know you might be interested.
Dan_Shues 10-20-2004, 11:49 AM Hmmmm...
I downloaded the file, it downloaded fine. Went to play and it errors out in Windows Media Player...
HOWEVER...
It seems to play fine in Winamp...
To those having problems...have you tried it in Winamp? Or are you trying to play it with Windows Media Player?
Goldenhawke 10-21-2004, 12:16 PM You know, I probably should comment on these before my wonderful Scarlet hunts me down and whaps me.
Devil in the Kitchen -- A very... energetic piece, for sure. :) At least on the first listening, though, it's pretty hard to follow -- a lot of the musical subtlety is lost in the speed.
Brenda Stubbert -- Slower, but a lot more powerful than Devil in the Kitchen. When this piece says something, it means it, and the melody's very driving.
Sleepy Maggie -- Opens as a lower-key song than even Brenda Stubbert, but that sets up a good introduction for the fiddle voice. The song really hits its stride around the 3-minute mark, when the fiddle plays harmony and counterpoint to the singer.
Overall, I'd say my favorite of the three is probably Brenda Stubbert.
ScarletHawke 10-21-2004, 11:59 PM Since the response to this artist has been so positive, do you guys want me to post more links from that album? You don't have to comment on the subsequent links if you don't want to -- only the original three. If I posted more links, those would just be for your own interest and amusement. No review required (although if you wanted to post about the other tunes, that'd be cool too!).
Thoughts?
BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ScarletHawke 10-22-2004, 07:51 PM Wow! Okay, then! I'll try to rip some more tracks this weekend and hopefully post them by next week.
Glad everyone's so enthused! Keep it coming! :D
ScarletHawke 10-28-2004, 07:46 PM Well, I do like these songs quite a lot -- they remind me of Tal Bachman and Train. In the first couple of bars I thought, Have I heard this guy before? I might have but just can't put my finger on it. Anyway, onto the songs...
Chariot: First thing I thought was: Nice vocals! The beat is easy and clean, and the piano is great. I couldn't make out the words too well so I looked up the lyrics... so yeah, those are a bit confusing, eh? Or maybe I just found a poor copy of the lyrics (God knows those abound on the web). I think I got the general idea though. ;)
Overrated: Right, this guy can sing. This is a really sweet song. I said elsewhere that I'm not into mushy ballads, but this is intelligent and kinda swingy. I like it.
More Than Anyone: This is probably my least favourite, as it definitely slides into the "mushy ballad" category -- and unlike Overrated, it's not as cool lyric-wise. Plus it gets a little repetitive at the end. Still a good song though.
Pretty cool in general, I might be looking this guy up in the future. Thanks Jerrmeister!
fos4snt 10-29-2004, 05:32 PM Hey... just wanted to post that I've been a SLACKER and haven't done my job in here yet. But, can I still post on the first selections, considering I'm somewhat behind and I think I've FINALLY caught up on the board, even though I haven't on my email. LOL.

Okay everyone, I didn't forget about posting the links to the rest of Ashley MacIsaac's album. I just caught a nasty cold and it kinda knocked me for a loop. But I'll get it done soon. Promise.
These songs are great for a day like today, it's rainy out and gloomy, these songs are relaxing and still upbeat and give a nice feeling. Unlike this rain which sucks.
Chariot- reminds me totally of Stevie Wonder, very easy to listen too, I liked it.
Overrated- Very cool melodies. He has a great voice and tones. My favorite out of the three
More than Anyone- I liked it, but I would have to be in the mood for this. Mostly only Piano and voice doesn't usually doesn't do much for me. I like that fat sounding music, but still a great song.
He is very talented, and young too!!!
Can someone tell me where you get the free links to listen to music online? I download everything from itunes, but want to preview the entire song before I download and pay for it.
Thanks@!!
ScarletHawke 11-18-2004, 10:00 PM What with all the drama lately on the boards (*coughJerrycough*), we seem to have stalled a bit on this thread. So question: Would everyone like to keep going with the last selection of songs, or start a new round with a new host?
PS: Just teasin' ya, Jerrback by popular demand. ;)

fos4snt 11-24-2004, 11:28 AM ... come from a band called Portishead which some of you have heard of and others... who knows. Here's a little background on the band from a fansite:
History of the band: When Geoff Barrow ran into Beth Gibbons in '91 at an Enterprise Training Scheme, a course for starting enterprisers, they hardly got along. They listened to each others home-made tapes and immediately came to the conclusion that it wouldn't work as they wanted different things. "Pretty soon it was: nice to meet you, bye" says Beth looking back on their first encounter. But when her singing career didn't go as planned she thought of Geoff again. They finished one of her songs and the outcome was "It Could Be Sweet". From that moment on the cooperation was a fact. After experienced jazz guitarist Adrian Utley and technician Dave McDonald joined them Portishead was finally born. The name "Portishead" came from the West Coast shipping suburb of Bristol where Geoff Barrow was raised. The story goes that Geoff was known as "that guy from (the town) Portishead" when he first began making music on the first Massive Attack album. The idea for the band name grew out of that.
Word began to spread about Portishead, and they ultimately succeeded in landing a deal with the UK label Go! Discs, in 1993. Their debut album "Dummy" was released a year later to great critical and commercial success. Nowadays Portishead are regarded as one of the pioneers of the so called "trip hop" movement and also as one of the most influential British bands of the 90s.

fos4snt 11-24-2004, 11:36 AM Scarlet said this was okay, because I honestly couldn't choose one band. ;) My second selection is from Dismemberment Plan, a local Washington, DC band that recently broke up. The links I am going to provide is direct to their site and will also give you plenty of band history if you want to peruse.
http://www.dismembermentplan.com is the site you need to visit to listen to these selections, and you will also need RealPlayer. You CAN listen to almost all their stuff online using RealPlayer. :D
My first selection requires you taking these steps:
Scroll down the main page to the album titled The Dismemberment Plan is Terrified and click on Track #3 titled The Ice of Boston.
My second selection requires you taking these steps:
Scroll back up the main page to the album titled Emergency & I and click Track #3 and listen to What Do You Want Me To Say?
My final selection requires you taking these steps:
Scroll up the main page to the album titled Change and take a listen to Track #5 titled Come Home.
(I also really recommend Time Bomb from the Change album, but given the choice, Come Home is much deeper... )
ENJOY!

ScarletHawke 01-03-2005, 09:37 PM Alright, just cuz it's the New Year, I'm going to make an attempt to revive this comatose thread. :)
It was going good for awhile there, so I know we can make it work again.
To this end, I'm officially re-opening membership.
Let me repeat that: MEMBERSHIP IS NOW OPEN FOR THE BEAT CLUB!
I just got a PM tonight from someone new who already came with suggestions, so I've told her to go ahead and post...
Please, a big welcome to lovey6975! :D

lovey6975 01-03-2005, 09:42 PM TY!TY!TY!
Now here's the problem.....:o
I went looking and can not seem to find a thing to listen to for the band I suggested:(
Scarlett? Can you try? This is such good stuff. Even if you don't like it it still hits chords to apperciate.
I can't believe all the "deadbeats" <snicker at own wittiness> out there on the ageless boards!! Truelly shocking guys!!
Come post something I can feel!!!

P.S
Scarlett don't forget I still need the help requested in the second pharagraph:D
ScarletHawke 01-03-2005, 09:46 PM Right, I'll look and I'll also send a PM to Jerry. If he can't find it, it can't be found. :)
Also, if you have the CD you could try ripping the appropriate tracks to your personal website and then posting the link to that. That's what I had to do with my selections. PM Goldenhawke for help with that.
lovey6975 01-03-2005, 09:52 PM I am literally laughing with that suggestionAlso, if you have the CD you could try ripping the appropriate tracks to your personal website and then posting the link to that. That's what I had to do with my selections. PM Goldenhawke for help with that
I can put it into my computer then I am LOST!! I can play it back to myself but that is all. As for my own website HAHAHAHAHAHA!!
I knew I liked you!!
I guess I should have filled you in on my computer prowess before I became a member:p OooOOppPPssSS stuck with me now.
I will see what I can learn ( after I find Jerry and see what he can learn me)
~Jenna
ScarletHawke 01-03-2005, 09:59 PM Hey Jenna, don't feel bad. Golden had to tell me how to rip tracks over IM chat -- and I am definitely no poster child for High Tech Computer Geekness. I was pretty clueless. I had to ask him to explain what he meant about a dozen times... I think we nearly broke up over it! :p
Anyway, the point is that it's definitely doable... so if we can't find it online, all is not quite lost. We'll see what we can do.
lovey6975 01-04-2005, 01:31 PM That's a total bummer J. I just found that thread last night too:(
~Jenna
lovey6975 01-04-2005, 02:17 PM Dunno what was I looking at last night but I found it first thing today.
Its simple to use too:D
My artist is Maroon5 I know they have likely been over played to some of you, but I bought the cd a few days ago and came across some songs they haven't played here on the radio yet.
So I will post the link. 2 of the songs you all know I'm sure but my first choice is:
Track: #4 Shiver
Track: #5 Sunday Morning
Track: #3

I hope it works and you all enjoy.
