December is Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness Month.
Overall, there has been a decrease in drunk driving over the last quarter century, but alcohol is still a contributing factor in 40 percent of highway deaths. The percentage spikes around the holidays to 52 percent on New Year's weekend.
Here's how to protect yourself and your loved ones this holiday season:
If you drink, don't drive. If you drive, don't drink.
If you see someone driving erratically, slow down and/or move off the road. If you think the driver poses a thread, pull over and call the authorities.
Always wear a seatbelt, even in the back seat. If the person in the back is not belted, they increase the risk of death of the front passengers by 500 percent because they act as a missle and cause them to impact the steering wheel.
If you're partying away from home, make sure you have a designated driver. If not, arrange to stay overnight at a hotel or at your host's home.
If you're hosting the party, make sure your guests have a way to get home or can stay overnight if needed.
Make sure there is plenty of food available, especially high protein food. Also have non-alcoholic beverages on hand.
Don't serve alcohol 90 minutes before the party ends. Instead, bring out the coffee and dessert.
Keep the Holidays Safe -- and Sober!!
