Mary Did You Know ---Clay Aiken

Mary, did you know
that your baby boy would one day walk on water?

Mary, did you know
that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?

Did you know,
that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered,
will soon deliver you.

Mary, did you know
that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?

Mary, did you know
your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?

Did you know,
that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby,
you've kissed the face of God.
Oh, Mary did you know.

The blind will see
The deaf will hear
The dead will live again.
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of The Lamb.

Mary, did you know
that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?

Mary, did you know
that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?

Did you know,
that your baby boy is heaven's perfect lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding, is the great I AM.

Angel Standing By ---Jewel

All through the night I'll be watching over you
And all through the night I'll be standing over you
And through the bad dreams I'll be right there, baby
Telling you everything is gonna be all right
And when you cry I'll be right there baby
Telling you you're nothing less than beautiful
So don't you worry
I'm your Angel standing by

Hard Candy Christmas ---Dolly Parton

Hey, maybe I値l dye my hair
Maybe I値l move somewhere
Maybe I値l get a car
Maybe I値l drive so far
They値l all lose track
Me, I値l bounce right back
Maybe I値l sleep real late
Maybe I値l lose some weight
Maybe I値l clear my junk
Maybe I値l just get drunk on apple wine
Me, I値l be just

Fine and dandy
Lord it痴 like a hard candy christmas
I知 barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won稚 let
Sorrow bring me way down

I値l be fine and dandy
Lord it痴 like a hard candy christmas
I知 barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won稚 let
Sorrow get me way down

Hey, maybe I値l learn to sew
Maybe I値l just lie low
Maybe I値l hit the bars
Maybe I値l count the stars until dawn
Me, I will go on

Maybe I値l settle down
Maybe I値l just leave town
Maybe I値l have some fun
Maybe I値l meet someone
And make him mine
Me, I値l be just

Fine and dandy
Lord it痴 like a hard candy christmas
I知 barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won稚 let
Sorrow bring me way down

I値l be fine and dandy
Lord it痴 like a hard candy christmas
I知 barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won稚 let
Sorrow bring me way down

I値l be fine and dandy
Lord it痴 like a hard candy christmas
I知 barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won稚 let
Sorrow bring me way down

団ause I値l be fine
(I値l be fine)
Oh, I値l be fine

Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

This version is by Chris Issack

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.

My favorite is.... by Nat King Cole

The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) :

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa's on his way;
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother's child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although its been said many times, many ways,
A very Merry Christmas to you

Three favorites... What Child is This (best version I've heard is by Martina McBride), We Three Kings, and an instrumental version of Ring Silver Bells by Trans-Siberian Orchestra (you have to hear this one).

What child is this who laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring him laud
The babe, the son of Mary

Why lies he in such mean estate
Where ox and *** are feeding
Good Christian fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading

So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh
Come peasant king to own Him
The King of kings, salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him

This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring him laud
The babe, the son of Mary

Oh Holy Night ---Josh Groban

Oh holy night
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear saviour's birth

Long lay the world
In sin and error pining
'Til he appeared
And the soul felt it's worth

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Fall on your knees
Oh hear the angel voices
Oh night divine
Oh night when Christ was born
Oh night divine
Oh night, Oh night divine

Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name all oppression shall cease

Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.

Christ is the Lord,
Let ever, ever praise thee
Noel, Noel
Oh night, oh night divine
Noel, Noel

Oh night, oh night divine
Noel, Noel

Oh night, oh night divine.

This one brings back many memories. Before we put in a wood burner, my dad and I would put a very large train platform up with Lionel trains...looked like a real city! Took up half the freaking living room...

"Old Toy Trains"

Old toy trains, little toy tracks
Little toy drums coming from a sack
Carried by a man dressed in white and red
Little boy, don't you think it's time you were in bed?

Close your eyes
Listen to the skies
All is calm, all is well
Soon you'll hear Kris Kringle and the jingle bells

Bringin' old toy trains, little toy tracks
Little toy drums coming from a sack
Carried by a man dressed in white and red
Little boy, don't you think it's time you were in bed?

Close your eyes
Listen to the skies
All is calm, all is well
Soon you'll hear Kris Kringle and the jingle bells

Bringin' old toy trains, little toy tracks
Little toy drums coming from a sack
Carried by a man dressed in white and red
Little boy, don't you think it's time you were in bed?

Oh jeez... I dunno where to begin here. My Mom's church holds a Candlelight Service every year on Christmas Eve and they sing a lot of the wonderful traditional hymns.

My list would include (but is not confined to):

Joy to the World
God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
In the Bleak Midwinter
Angels We Have Heard on High
O Come Immanuel
Gaudete, Gaudete (Rejoice, Rejoice)
Silent Night
O Come All Ye Faithful
It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
O Little Town of Bethlehem
We Three Kings

I also really like "The Huron Carol", which was taught by the Jesuits to the Huron Indians in the 1600's. It was originally written in the Huron language and is known as the first Canadian Christmas carol. Depending on your point of view, it can be seen as an unwelcome intrusion upon original aboriginal beliefs, or a creative and inclusive way to share the story of Christmas. I don't get too hung up on the politics, myself -- I just think it's a really cool song. :)

The tune is beautiful and haunting, but I can't find an mp3 link for it. However, here are the lyrics.

The Huron Carol

'Twas in the moon of wintertime
When all the birds had fled
That mighty Gitchi Manitou
Sent angel choirs instead
Before their light the stars grew dim
And wandering hunters heard the hymn

Chorus
Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born
In excelsis gloria.

Within a lodge of broken bark
The tender Babe was found
A ragged robe of rabbit skin
Enwrapped His beauty round
But as the hunter braves drew nigh
The angel song rang loud and high

Chorus

O children of the forest free
O sons of Manitou
The Holy Child of earth and heaven
Is born today for you
Come kneel before the radiant boy
Who brings us beauty, peace and joy.

Chorus

Did you know that "What Child Is This" was a Christianized (Christmas-ized?) version of a 16th-century love song called "Greensleeves"?

This melody has a long history, beginning with its first mention in 1580 as a "new northern dittye of the Lady Greene Sleeves." It later was used as a political ballad, and even makes an appearance (by reference only) in Shakespeare痴 play, The Merry Wives of Windsor. The lyrics of "What Child Is This" were added by William Dix in the 1800's.

Greensleeves

Alas, my love you do me wrong
To cast me off discourteously
For I have loved you so long
Delighting in your company

I have been ready at your hand
To grant whatever you would crave
And I have waged both life and land
Your love and good will for to have

Chorus
Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
And who but my lady Greensleeves?

Thou couldst desire no earthly thing
But still thou hast it readily
Thy music for to play and sing
And yet thou would not love me

Chorus

I would my love entreat you still
That thou my constancy may see
For I remain thy lover true
Come once again and love me

Chorus

(There are a TON more verses, this is just a sample.)

I grew up listening to the Dr. Demento radio show...there were always some hilarious comdey and novelty tunes to put a smile on my face. In 1986, Weird Al Yankovic offered this Cold War era gem:

It's Christmas at Ground Zero by Al Yankovic

It's Christmas at Ground Zero
There's music in the air
The sleigh bells are ringin' and the carolers are singin'
While the air raid sirens blare

It's Christmas at Ground Zero
The button has been pressed
The radio just let us know
That this is not a test

Everywhere the atom bombs are droppin'
It's the end of all humanity
No more time for last minute shoppin'
It's time to face your final destiny

Well, it's Christmas at Ground Zero
There's panic in the crowd
We can dodge debris while we trim the tree
Underneath a mushroom cloud

(siren)

You might hear some reindeer on your rooftop
Or Jack Frost on your windowsill
But if someone's climbin' down your chimney
You better load your gun and shoot to kill

Oh, it's Christmas at Ground Zero
And if the radiation level's okay
I'll go out with you and see the all new
Mutations on New Year's Day

It's Christmas at Ground Zero
Just seconds left to go
I'll duck and cover with my yuletide lover
Underneath the mistletoe

It's Christmas at Ground Zero
Now the missiles are on their way
What a crazy fluke we're gonna get nuked
On this jolly holiday
What a crazy fluke we're gonna get nuked
On this jolly holiday

(siren)

Also, who can forget the Singing Dogs as they barked to "Jingle Bells"?

Yes, Scarlet, I was aware that the tunes were the same. I love them no matter what name its called by, but I was unaware of the lyrics because I have only heard instrumentals of Greensleeves. Thanks for that tidbit of history :)
