Aye, it is. ;) I'm a Virginia girl, though... up until recently. Housing costs in the tri-state area were outrageous, so I sold mine and bailed. Still work in Reston, tho.

FOUR DAY WEEKEND, though. Muahahahhaa.. Thank you snow, THANK YOU. LOL.

Not at ALL!

Let me give you some very good reasons to consider it. ;)

When I lived in Sterling, my commute to Arlington was 1 hour 40 minutes EACH way. Thank you HOV. At the time, my son was an infant. I had to look for work closer to home and give up a good job, good pay and GREAT benefits. I took a job in Reston paying nearly 10k a year less in pay and benefits, so I could commute only 20 minutes.

I've been at this job 9 years now.

My commute out to the eastern panhandle is usually less than 1 hour. Each way.

That's still considerably less than my commute from Sterling to Arlington, now isn't it? Plus, my kids come with me, as they are educated in Reston.

From Reston to Charles Town, it's a straight shot out either Rt 7 or the Greenway (Rt 7 is FREE and does NOT take more time, even though it SEEMS that way due to all the lights) to the 7 bypass to Route 9. It's 60 miles. But, if I leave the office at 4, I am home by no later than 5:10. Nothing to gripe about.

Nowhere NEAR as bad as going into DC!! Or even anywhere right inside or outside of the Beltway.

You can still buy a house in WVA for under 200k. BUY. Not for long, tho. Not for long!!! Loudoun County has seen the largest percentage growth on real estate in the last 2 years of anywhere in the country (I know, I cashed in on it) and also has the highest demand for housing and the highest SHORTAGE due to "smart growth" which disallows anymore tract housing in western Loudoun. Each new McMansion must be on 5 acres minimum.

Which does what? Oh... yay! Sends the developers out to WVA to throw up tract housing communities. They're going up EVERYWHERE in Jefferson County, Morgan County and Berkeley County.

They don't last. They sell quicker then they can build them.

Don't blink, or they'll all be gone and another real estate opportunity will blow over you and you'll be stuck paying rent which is NOT controlled. $1,200 2 years ago for a one bedroom in Reston, I heard.

Those new high rise condo's across from the town center: one bedroom condos... didn't they ALL sell for in EXCESS of $500k?

No, I love my commute. I love my house (the whole darn neighborless acre of it and all 2400 square feet of country bliss), I love my drive and I wish I had moved out here six years ago when I could have gotten this place for under 100k.

Drive on out to the race track/casino sometime and time how long it takes you.

It takes longer to get to 7 Corners than it does to get here.

I am amazed, first you really know your stuff and secondly it makes very good sense. And yeah those condos in RTC went for over that price, so I understand exactly what you are talking about. I have always known that buying out there has to be cheaper, but the biggest draw back, well I guess I just have a negative connoctation is the drive but you are right it takes just as longa s being stuck in traffic. Luckily for me I live 10 mins away so my drive into work is not bad at all, and plus I just love this area. So for me eventhough you make is sound great ( You sounded like an informecial that gets you hooked) I am gonan stay here for a while!=) But thanks for the opinion and I am certainly glad you are happy and it has worked out well for you and your family!:)
What is it that you do?

Yeah, I really loved living in Sterling, so I know what you mean... I grew up in Reston. I hold NO particular affection for the community and I know it like the back of my hand. ;) Reston, formerly known as the communist community of Reston under ROHA ownership, now much more lax in its ideals as a community, has turned into a commercialized nightmare.

Once, under communist rule, the "plan of Reston" was that no buildings would be taller than tree level, except the International Center. It would be a community of perfect equality between business and residence and it was for many years.

It was lovely watching the early years of the development of the communist community under ROHA management. Then ROHA disbanded, the "plan" of Reston TRASHED in the big proverbial round file, and the MEGA SUPER ENORMO buildings started popping up. Reston Town Center was conceived and built and everything Reston WAS has slowly been decimated.

What you see now is but only the brutal, trashed and decimated crust of what was once a beautiful community. And for now, you probably still see some beauty in it, but I will ALWAYS know the truth of Reston and there is nothing in it worth sticking around for... I have found, here... what Reston was in the 1970s and I'm watching them come in and develop it like they did Reston in the 1970s and in about 20 years, I will cry for the death of a good community once again... giving way to "progress"

I'm a graphic artist and I work in an insurance brokerage. You?

You are hysterical, and yeah I remember the pre- RTC days, but to be honest with you I don't mind it, I think it is taking a cosmopolitan look and since I am a city person I think it is a great way to go. And who knows maybe one day Ill be able to afford an apt right accross the street from RTC. LOL
I am a network analyst for a wireless firm!:)

I was a city person once, too. For the six years I lived in Richmond and the 10 years after whining to go back. Now I'm rural. It's an interesting transition...

Glad I could make ya laugh. But, you know... no matter how much they try to make Reston like a CITY (it isn't even a TOWN for crying out loud... they've voted down "township" status multiple times!), it will never be a city. You HAVE to have a car to get around, even with the bike paths... and the more people you bring into these cramped quarters (since they can't build anymore HOUSES), the less safe they are...

Meh. I guess I still get my Reston fix since my folks STILL live there (since '75) and my job is there. ;)

Network analyst for a wireless firm... OH! There are a lot of those in Reston. Fun!

not too bad not too bad...well, I don't know if I can ever go rural! Altough I will say WVA is gorgeous! I want to drive again donw rt50 west, it's lovely, I can't run outta gas there though!=) LOL
I want to do some fishing there this summer, maybe you can point me out a spot or two close by! =)

It is gorgeous. :D I'm not much of a fisher-person, so I don't know where any good fishin' spots are around here, but the Shenandoah is no little river. Plenty of places to fish, I assume. LOTS of canoeing and kayaking around Harper's Ferry.

I'm more a train person... LOL. Fascinated by trains. Live 50 feet off one of many, many, many train lines around here. It reminds me a lot of living in Richmond. I had lived on Grace St. in the Fan in two different apartments over 3 years. In the first place, I was on the fire route. 4, 5, 6 times a night they'd come ROARING down the side street right past my window sirens blaring. I moved to a GREAT amazing beautiful ENORMOUS apartment ($425/mo :o ) and guess what? They moved the fire station two blocks down... to my street. Fire engines, 4, 5, 6 times a night roaring and grinding gears and hitting potholes. But heck if I would give up THAT apartment. TWO working fireplaces, and it was all to myself? Hahahahaa. no.

So, living 50 feet off a major train line with trains ROARING by all day and all night at 20-45 minute intervals blaring their horn as they cross the crossing behind my house.... Muahahhahaa...

The funny thing is most of them you don't even hear. Like, a house full of clocks. The first couple days your there you're overwhelmed by ALL that sound, and then... you realize hours or days have gone by and you didn't even NOTICE anything? No coo-coo, no dingdingdingding dingdingdingding or anything?

Yeah. The sounds of life don't stop just cuz you move out into the country.

Today the snow melting on my metal roof had loud icicles CRASHING onto the porch roof and the metal cover for the AC unit. FREAKY weird sounds!
