MerAlove23 02-25-2005, 09:36 PM OMG How do I keep my son safe!!! LOL he's crawling now and standing with help he's already fallen a few times... i child proofed the house OMG I swear he's going to have brain damage!!!
Does his constant falling hurt him that bad??
whiterose 02-26-2005, 09:01 AM Somehow, Mer, I think he'll survive. :) My children usually managed to fall on their soft, cushy behinds (thank goodness for diapers). But, my son was very prone to hitting his head especially after he got to age 3 or more. It would often happen when he was running through the house or playing outside and he'd trip on the ground or over his own two feet. Poor little klutz :p.
Once I had to rush him to the emergency room after he ran through the house, tripped over his feet, and his head hit the corner of a wall (even put a dent in the wall!). They didn't even x-ray his skull because they told me that most skull fractures don't even show up on the x-ray. I just had to check on him frequently during the night to make sure he woke up. I was an exhausted wreck by the time it was over, but he survived!
I don't think there's anything you can do to protect him other than to just keep a careful eye on him as I know that you already do. You're a terrific mommy.
CabinFever 02-26-2005, 09:12 AM Yep, kids are pretty resilient. My little sister had one of those "walkers". I think they are banned now, but she fell down a flight of stairs in it and landed on the cement basement floor. She wasn't hurt - I don't know how!
Here's a little tidbit of info: I worked at a chiropractic office, and the doctors always stressed the importance of crawling for babies. They said it was really important that they get to crawl around lots, because it helps in the formation of the correct spine curvature.
After raising 5 children, I view myself as a bit of an expert in these type of things. My granddaughter is 16 months old and just went through all of that unsteadiness. Of course she is in the midst of other scary antics, but so far so good - no permanent scars yet, (or trips to the ER).
Kids are made of tough rubber when it comes to falling down. Now, if we were to take the tumbles that they do, we'd be in traction for a week!
The worse thing for them are sharp corners, such as the ones that can be found on coffee tables and end tables. Make sure those are out of the babies path. They will split their lips, get some nice sized goose-eggs and even blacken eyes when taking a header into things, but as long as the sharp corners are nonexistent, they seem to fare well.
What has to be watched carefully is when they learn to climb- my oldest son broke an arm after climbing on top of his dresser and then thought it was safe to dive off, (he was 5 at the time).
When it comes to crawling and walking, the biggest hazard is falling down stairs, going out open windows, and injury caused by sharp objects.
Clear the way for them, block any stairs and make sure all open windows are not at their level.
Try not to worry too much and be his safety net when you can. He is much more durable than you think and his clumsy attempts at getting around just prepares him better for the future.
MerAlove23 02-26-2005, 08:18 PM Thanks guys... I swear my blood pressure in one week sky rocketed.... If I don't lose weight NOW I don't know how I will LOL
Thanks guys !! You all Rock!!
Belisama 02-28-2005, 10:31 AM ~smile~ you could always duct tape dish towels around the sharp edges in your house (kidding, kidding...)
Softiee19 03-05-2005, 11:01 AM OMG Mera, I know what you mean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm ready to put a baby helmet on her and knee pads and anything else I can find!!!
I think I already have gray hair at 20 from all of this!!!!!!! :D
Belisama 03-05-2005, 08:30 PM LOL -- it if makes you feel any better, I was so afraid people might think I was some child abuser, what with all the bumps and bruises!
Also, my oldest was a "head banger" -- he would rock in his crib and bang his head up against the headboard (intentionally! ) over and over again!
By the way, I was only half joking about the towels and duct tape; our fireplace had very sharp, brick edges and when my daughter got a bad ouchie, we really did get those rubber edge thingies you buy at the store and duct taped them on for good measure!
MerAlove23 03-11-2005, 05:53 AM Well Now he's not only crawling.... He's CLIMBING EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!! If I put him down he's climbing something... He's already got one egg on his head... and I say NO ALL DAY LONG ARRRGGHHHH....
Softee I agree I'm going gray already...... !!
Well. I used a playpen and I don't feel bad for it either.
I know a lot of people are opposed to them, but the playpen was a saving grace for me.
I used it more with my younger children - never used one for my first chid. The playpen served as a great place for me to put baby when my hands were full with the other kids. Most of the time the playpen served as a place for all the baby toys to be piled in, but I loved having the pen to put baby when things got chaotic or when I had some house cleaning to do.
My babies liked their playpen and their time in there was limited - never did they sit in the playpen for hour upon hour. My youngest son loved to take all his toys in the pen, (after he was done playing with them), and toss them out one by one. When the last toy was tossed out, he was ready to exit the pen.
It's hard being on top of the antics of an active baby and toddler and there were times I needed to be able to turn my back and not worry about baby - the playpen gave me the freedom to make meals without a baby on my hip or under my feet. I never left baby alone in the playpen, (such as me going off and doing something in another room - unless one of the other children were there with baby), but even then, my time out of his sight while in the playpen was not much. There was still the worry that he might choke on a toy or something like that.
MerAlove23 03-11-2005, 05:19 PM Sage I wish I could use a play pen.. He won't stay in it LOL Unless I want to hear him scream for hours LOL... Oh boy I'm in for it LOL
