Hey folks..
Just dropped in to see what was happening. I'm a 35 yr. old woman married to a 67 yr. old man... We just celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary in Feb., and have been together for two years before that. It's been a great relationship for both of us (my 2nd marriage, his 4th), though it was tough at the beginning.
It's funny that my guy had the big problem with our age difference at the beginning. He tried to walk out of my life 3 times when we were dating...mainly because he thought that I was too young and needed to have kids. Well, he FINALLY got the message, and we've had a strong relationship ever since.
For my part, I didn't walk into this blindly. I had been married to a guy my own age for about 8 yrs. when he decided that he wanted someone else (and she had kids, to top it off! He hadn't cared about kids before that). I'd never had the "urge" to have kids... sure they love me, and I like being around them, but I guess all of my nurturing energy goes into my animals (I have 3 cats, a dog, and 13 horses right now...).
I think the biggest thing about this kind of relationship is to talk about things in your life. My husband and I have similar backgrounds (amazing, for the age difference), and so we have some things to talk about in a day to day setting. Sure, we have our differences... he likes romantic comedies, I like thrillers... I like to read & listen to music, he'd rather watch TV... but we've made a committment to each other. We talk about the future all the time.... what will happen when he gets older & I can't take care of him....who the next "Goober" will be, etc. He's also been great about treating me like an equal when it comes to finances... he wants me to understand how everything financial is set up, so I'll be taken care of when it's time for me to retire. What a great man!
For now, we have a great life. I have the freedom to do what I want (train horses), and he's still working a bit (he retired, but still keeps his hand into his old occupation). We have a nice place, and we have enough projects to keep him off the couch. =) We have lots of fun, and really seem to have one of the best marriages in our little community.
If you're willing to give, and have really looked into the future at what may happen, this kind of age difference is negligable.
Hope that wasn't too long! Have a great week!
