kathyw 05-17-2005, 01:12 AM I don't know if I will always be a rebel...all I know for sure is that I still am...lately, their have been days when I just wanted to get in the car and drive and drive and drive...and land wherever I decided to stop...ya have to be careful when these thoughts come to mind..wanna make sure you're not running away from your problems when contimplating this idea (hmmm running away from problems..sounds like a plan to me!)
Next subject...I am a major coffee drinker,,,I like the "good stuff" anyone here have some suggestions of new stuff I can try...I am bored with just the regular brews at Starbuck...like house blend and stuff...if you've tried some that you liked let me know...k? (Hey were all entitled to at least one addiction aren't we?) LOL :)
Loucine 05-17-2005, 05:34 AM try Ethiopian moka. The taste is great and it doesn't get you all wired up. You can almost drink it at night like a decaf.
Hope you'll feel better soon :)
GoldieCat 05-17-2005, 05:45 AM Oh kathyw...you have allowed me to mourn the late, great, Vanilla French Roast from New England Coffee Co. It was FANTASTIC. But they cancelled it. Since they also made a French Vanilla (NOT the same thing), I'm sure people got confused...unfortunately they chose to stop making the better one. When I lived in NJ for grad school, I used to mailorder that stuff by the 5 pound bag....if they ever make it again I want some!
In this area where I am now, one very nice "premium" coffee you can get at the market is Millstone. I never saw it in MA though, but that doesn't mean it's not there.
You might try some coffees from Trader Joe's, although their regular French Roast isn't all that spectacular. We get the Double Dark, that's pretty good.
If you want something exotic, expensive, and excellent, mail order something from Lion Coffee in Hawaii: "It just makes sense!" Their Macadamia coffees are great, but so is most of what they do.
As far as "coffeehouse" coffee...I tended to avoid paying big "bucks" when I could make something really good at home. However, I lived right around the corner from Carberry's in Arlington and their dark roast was quite good. (There's another Carberry's somewhere else too...Somerville maybe?)
Mmmm.....coffee.....I'm having some right now! :D
I'm also drinking a cup. Mine is Starbuck's Gold Coast. I like best because it doesn't have that bitterness that so many dark roasts have. Here is Washington state, the coffee capital of the US, we have 'espresso' stands on practically every corner in town, and then at several points along the major travelled roads. But I have to say, my daughter makes the best latte's I've ever tasted, and I confess, I've tasted many many many!!
One of the best coffee's I've ever tried however is not so easily available. It was grown and harvested by our local 'Love Israel' family. I have several friends among them, and they would cut me a good deal on their freshly roasted beans. Omg it was sooooooo good! But alas, most of them have moved away now.....
Genevieve 05-17-2005, 03:24 PM I love coffee too, but I'm not the coffee expert. I'm drinking Folger's Gourmet Supreme. I like it because it's pretty dark, but not very bitter.. has a rich taste. LOL, I sound like a commercial! :)

freespirit 05-17-2005, 05:57 PM Woohoo sister girlfriend....way to go....running away on a greyhound bus I am impressed. Haven't done that for a few years but I remember the feeling of freedom and not being locatable, it was such a relief and finding my identity was such a moment. Celebrate with some good dark roast arabic...I think bittersweet is symbolic!!
kathyw 05-18-2005, 07:01 AM Wow..I am getting some great tips here! The running away part..well...whenever life gets to be to much..I have always been one to run away by myself for a few days to regroup and become more centered..to the mountains..going hiking...just doing whatever I choose...I am past due for one of those trips..lol
And as for the coffee thing..well I am gonna try all of these new coffees you all have suggested..and may add a few myself here over the next few days..I LOVE COFFEE...so please keep posting your coffee ideas...I'm enjoying this thread! :)
joelstrouble 05-18-2005, 07:24 AM Me and coffe are the best of friends!!!!
I have at least five mugs of coffee every day!!!
I usally drink coffe with both mild and sugar (diett)
and i have this little cafe where I live that make this coffee that he have called
"cafe au love", yummy!!!! its like cafe au lait but he ads this coffee sirup "amaretto" and draws a heart on it... and I always add brown sugar...
I also love black coffee to sweet desserts!!!!
Roseilicious 05-18-2005, 08:23 AM I love coffee too, but I'm not the coffee expert. I'm drinking Folger's Gourmet Supreme. I like it because it's pretty dark, but not very bitter.. has a rich taste. LOL, I sound like a commercial! :)
Oooo... Love Folgers Supreme!
My parents are European, and have always gone with Espresso, and in having grown up in a home that had espresso wafting through the house first thing in the morning I LOVE the aroma! Oh... and they did the espresso, espresso.. ya know... the STRONG with the coffee silt at the bottom of the cup espresso in demi-tasse (1/3 c.) servings. As a child I was allowed 'coffee', but cafe au lait.. HEAVY on the cream.
When I moved away from home as will happen I became homesick and thought... call Ma and ask her how to brew expresso, so I can do the homesick/comfort thing. So, anyway... I follow instructions, but 'I'm an adult now', right?... raised in a society that does coffee in MUGS, not demi-tasse. I brew the stuff up, pour a MUG, easy on the cream, do the usual sugar, sucked that down and 20 mins later... ZIINNGGGG!! Woooooo!! FELT my HAIR GROW, ppl!! LMAO!
I still love the aroma and taste of espresso, so I mix equal amounts of espresso (Medaglia D'oro) with Folgers Medium Roast or Supreme grinds. Fantastic rich, not too acidic (and the Folders cuts the bitter of espresso) flavor! Espresso being what it is... it still gets me zingin', but the cutting it with Folger's, has my hair growing at a normal rate....LOL!
As to 'Getting Away'... I haven't had a vacation in twelve years and have had to do the 'happy place' thing sporatically when needed (and so far have not been able to pull off the 'whole weekend alone just for me' thing as yet), but most always WITH my children (they're only 9 & 10 still) and I have always been a single mother until marrying my YM a year and a half ago. On June 1, they go (the kids) to my parents (they're in Mich, and we're in Fla) for the ENTIRE Summer. I'm still working on wrapping my mind around that idea alone, for the moment. :o
We also keep a fresh can of Folger's Gourmet Supreme in the house. And that is usually the way we have our coffee, by mixing it with the Gold Coast, although I do like to make just the Gold Coast first thing in the morning. I've yet to find another canned coffee I think tastes good. I have taken cans back to the store if it doesn't taste like I like it.
Normally I drink my coffee BLACK!! :D But once in awhile, usually a chilly morning, I'll add a little bit of Hazelnut or French Vanilla creamer to it. And then, once or twice a week my daughter will make me up a latte, with Hazelnut or Irish Creme. And all that frothy milk.... Mmmmmm!
Loucine 05-20-2005, 03:40 AM Lynn, I also drink my coffee black. I love the taste of coffee and don't feel like adding anything to change it.
Here we drink coffee very dark. Some people have expresso machines even at home but what I use is one of those Italian coffee pots where you put the water in the bottom compartment, coffee in the middle and then with the heat the water goes up through a small pipe through the coffee compartment and fills the top part. Do you know what I'm talking about ?? I never use the electric coffee machines, I know some people like it but TO ME that light coffee tastes like 'dirty sock juice'
Science Goddess 05-20-2005, 04:32 PM Starbucks?? No, no, my dear kathyw, turn that car around and head for the nearest Peets.
Sulawasi Kalosi, Italian Roast or...their House Blend. I love these three.
As far as getting in your car and driving, driving, driving...you're talking to a gal that was born with a deep-seated sense of wanderlust. I OFTEN get the urge to pack up and just MOVE...to GO somewhere...different.
I'm with you...I'm a-hankerin' to be picked up by the wind and dropped somewhere these days. I've really had to hold onto some anchors for the last couple of months to keep me from blowing away with the wind. And you're right...one should, at some point, determine if one is running from their problems, or maybe themselves, when they pick up and go. *small laugh* I know someone like this. :p
These days, I know myself well enough to know that if I DO accept a new job in another city or state, it's because I'm ready for a change. I'm going through another growth spurt, and sometimes it's easier to shed your most recent cocoon and spread those new wings in a new place. (But, we're all different, I guess.)
Also, there's nothing wrong with taking a road trip to clear your mind and your soul. I used to do it often, and I still do it when I get the chance. A solo road trip is sometimes just what the doctor has ordered!
In fact, as soon as I settle on a new job (and possibly new location), I'm going on a solo trip somewhere to celebrate!
And Rose...wow! You're not going to know what to do with yourself! Girl, you need to find the time and resources to go on a vacation once in a while. Good for the soul!
..
GoldieCat 05-20-2005, 04:39 PM that light coffee tastes like 'dirty sock juice'
I say this about coffee, wine, and beer: If you can see through it...forget it!
Ok, there are good exceptions in wine and beer, but in general, you know. I can't think of any reason to drink see-through coffee though!

Coffee: You should be able to eat it with a spool (almost).
Beer: The darker, the better (Black & Tan, anyone?)
Wine: Prefer red but appreciate white at the right time. I actually have learned to appreciate a nice cold pinot grigio when it's rippin' hot outside.
A horrible horrible fad over the last few years has been to chill (just barely) a fruity red when the weather is hot. I've cursed this trend numerous times. So, you can imagine how horrified I was when I grudgingly tested a barely-chilled Valdiguié at an art & wine festival in 100 degree heat...and I liked it.
Horrors. I'm tainted.
GoldieCat 05-20-2005, 07:41 PM Haha...my mom still asks if she should put the red wine in the fridge... ...but I hope you haven't run into those poor misguided souls who....put ice cubes in their wine. ;)
Science Goddess 05-21-2005, 09:02 AM Haha...my mom still asks if she should put the red wine in the fridge... ...but I hope you haven't run into those poor misguided souls who....put ice cubes in their wine. ;)
*sigh* One of my best friends does this...puts ice cubes in her white wine. And when I visit her, she pours, and puts ice in mine. I lift them out with a spoon, and don't complain much. I love her to death.
I figure if she likes it, that's up to her. *sigh*
But I a couple of months ago I took a $20 bottle of white to her place for dinner, and it was painful to watch the ice cubes go into her glass.
Loucine 05-21-2005, 09:30 AM well, some French red wines are good when they are cold like Gamay and Bourgueil. White wine is of course much better chilled.
There's something that we do here often is that we add some cassis (red berries) liqueur to white wine and call the mixture 'kir' and with that we can use ice cubes. We also add cassis to champagne and call it 'kir royale'. It's quite good actually. We drink it as an aperetif (apetiser) of course. In summer I play around and add other liqueur flavours to my white wine such as mimosa, melon or violet.
Of course I never spoil a good bottle of white wine with liqueurs or ice cubes. That's out of the question.
Chatterbox 05-21-2005, 09:10 PM My ex keeps me supplied with Caffe Mocha Ora from Italy. I have never, never tasted a coffee (expresso actually - I use it in cappuccino) so delicious! But that doesn't help you, Kathy!
Here's something that might: Cubano coffee. A small amount of very, very strong expresso, then mix-in twice as much steamed sweetened condensed milk (the kind you buy in the can at any grocery). Yummmmm.
Oooh, ooh, there used to be a member that came here that promised she would never forgive me for posting this, but mentioning sweetened condensed milk did me in: For a delicious snack, put pecans (or walnuts) into a bowl; then pour sweetened condensed milk on them, then add some maple-flavored syrup (like Aunt Jemima) --- tastes like fudge without the cooking!!!!! (Ooooh, bad Chatterbox!)
Chatterbox 05-21-2005, 09:15 PM Just a thought, I took myself on a vacation by myself once - flew to North Carolina, rented a car, headed for the mountains, and drove everywhere for 5 days. Put 600 miles on the car. LOVED IT! Nobody to say, "Hurry up.", "Get up.", "Let's go.", etc. etc. etc. I even BACKTRACKED ( ) whenever I wanted to see something more closely, take a picture, whatever. I highly recommend it.
freespirit 05-21-2005, 11:20 PM yeah SG I have a friend who does that...not being too much of a purist but if you're going to drink wine make it good wine...
.....in which case it is about the wine!!! Its flavour, the occassion, the food, the friends....
I have another friend that dilutes ANY wine with fruit juice in some vain attempt at making a cooler type drink...her reason is she doesn't like the taste of wine????
Find something else to drink i say coz wine is wine. lets just say i don't take expensive wine to her place coz it just turns into fruit juice.
Just MiMi 05-22-2005, 06:44 AM Nothing equals a good red wine! One of the first things on my list of "to do" when I return to the US in four more days!
It is amazing how much the women on this site have in common. I love a dark beer, love coffee, and drink green tea because it is good for you.
I ran away to Eureka Springs and went to the shops, craft shows, and restaurants. It was exhilerating. My ex asked, "What came over you?" I replied ,"The first sane idea since we married."

*sigh* THIS is one of the reasons I love taking trips alone. You don't have to wait for a half a second for anyone. And no one is waiting for you.
You can literally do exactly what YOU want to do, 24 hours a day.
You girls are just making me hanker even more for a road trip!

So, chilling those flowery red is acceptable in France?
The idea that you describe above sounds wonderful!
Seems like something like a sauvignon blanc or a pinot grigio might be the best wine 'mixer' for liquers..? Seems like a chardonnay might be to heavy...?

My boyfriend and I did something similar. Travelled over the North Cascades pass. A trip that normally takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours to drive took us 6! We backtracked and actually hiked a bit to snap pictures of waterfalls; walked over snowfields; stopped at the lookout; visited the dam; stopped to feed the chipmunks; stuff nobody else would ever want to do in the past. I should scan some of those pics and post them in the album. :)

Thanks for all of the great ideas everyone...yep, I am WAY past due for one of my little road trips..it's amazing what time alone can do for a person! When I lived in California I used to take little trips by myself for the weekend ...once in awhile..to this little town called Idyllwild...quiet, peaceful, and stress free....boy, I miss those days...and sometimes yes...I agree...it's just what the doctor ordered... :)

Oooo that sounds like a goodie Idol. More and more I find myself turning to organic coffees and I see Newhall's carries it.
I just tried a new coffee last weekend when we took a trip over to E.WA. It's called Cravens, and they also have organic which is served in a few of the espresso stands over there in Spokane. My gosh it was good. Hard to find a dark roast that doesn't have a bitter after taste. Craven's (http://www.cravenscoffee.com/index.html)
lencarol 06-18-2005, 11:16 AM A good and informative thread here about coffees. I love coffee, not a great connoisseur yet, but know what I like.
Is it okay to put an ice cube in brandy? I know it is a no-no to put ice in red wine, but I do it in secret at home... ;)

Thanks Lynn! I just looked up the site..going to order some this week and check it out.. I like strong coffee without to much of an "edge"...I'm pretty picky (in more ways than one...ugh) hehe..but this sounds great!
If anyone else has any great coffee suggestions...let me know....and I dunno about ice cubes in brandy lencarol...I don't drink....alcohol that is..coffee is better for me. ;)
vickie 06-22-2005, 10:06 AM My YM is from India. They drink instant coffee there....not brewed. They take great care in making it (not so instant!)
For two cups, put cup and a half on to boil and add two full teaspoons of coffee. Boil on high until it almost boils over. Pull off stove top until foam goes down. Bring it to this state at least three times. Pour in half cup of milk and and bring to boil three times again. If you want more bitter....sprinkle in some crystals in your cup. This is amazingly smooth and tastes very roasted.
