Cat Litter.....IMPORTANT!!

So I'm sure most of you cat owners out there have heard about not using clay-clumping litter for kittens......reason being because they may lick their paws after using the box and ingest the clay into their stomach which could be fatal. Well, this also applies for any age of cats! Please, if you use clay-clumping litter STOP! I have been hearing stories and talking to my vet about how even older cats can become quite ill if they get clay into their intestines. What I now use is a litter made completely 100% of Wheat, AND it clumps! So...if ingested the wheat immediatly breaks up and is digested along with food or water. I had no idea!! I love it too!!! It smells super natural and controls odor amazingly!!
The brand I am using is called 'S Wheat'....very good. There are several kinds, just make sure there is NO CLAY!

bye-bye :-)

I JUST bought S'Wheat yesterday!! Hah! I liked the idea that you can flush the clumps down the toilet (if you let them dissolve for 20 minutes first).

I bought it at Publix Supermarket, Catlover.

I was thinking of returning it for something called something like "pearls" or something - the "pearls" absorb the urine and order for one month, you clean out the poopies, then throw out the "pearls" and replace with fresh. Anybody use "pearls"?

I use a natural pine litter. It's not a clumping kind and you're not supposed to flush it. It smells REALLY good and lasts about a month, too. Just put an inch in the bottom and it "absorbs" the urine (the pellets grow... but they are pretty big to begin with) and you scoop out the pooplets. It's like $15 a bag, but it lasts for about 6 fresh boxes (for us, that's about 6 months!)...

I get it at a small, non-chain petstore.

Just one thing I learned for the first time yesterday about clay litter (please don't think I'm awful if you already know this) but all kitty litter should be completely dumped out after a month. I never knew that because Cat's Pride clumps really hard, there's no odor, and so I never thought about dumping out the whole thing.

Oh, GreenEyedGirl, a kitten!!! Enjoy!!!

As I've written before, I got my kitty when he was just days old, and I remember, almost as soon as he opened his eyes, I put a little kitty litter into a low-sided pie pan, and he'd walk right in and use it! Amazing how much they "know" from genetically-transmitted knowledge!

I never used the clumping kind because my cats seemed to not like it and it made such a huge mess around the box. I found it to be more difficult to keep cleaned up that clay litter.

I use Tidy Cat for multiple cat households, have 3 boxes for 4 cats and change the entire thing 1-2 times a week by dumping them. I keep them in my garage as far away from the door to the house as possible. :D No scooping the pooplets for me! :p

girl i had this type box before and THEY IMPROVED ON IT.....it's the box with the house top on it, filter and everything up top for ventilation. and now.....it has a trap door in the front, no litter flying all over, lol

and yup chatter, we'll enjoy her and she'll enjoy us. it took all of maybe 2 hours for her to come in and start zippin' everywhere and making this humble abode her CASTLE lol, she has even got the 70 lb. dog whipped into submission. lol

Awwww!!!! A new kitty!!!!! How exciting for you GreenEyedGirl!! so what have you decided to name her?????

I also love the fact that I can flush my litter clumps! So nice! :-)

Ya, I nearly had a heart attack when I learned about the clay litter......litterally ran home and changed the whole box out......I was so paranoid that I even felt around my cats stomach to see if there were any hard areas, (that is one of the signs that they ingested clay)......ANAL ME!!!

Can only speak for my cats, but tbh, they never have any litter rest sticking on them, so I have been quite satisfied with using clumping stuff for years ... especially, as my cats do most of their business outside anyway, and only use the litter if the weather is bad and they are too lazy :)

So, tbh, I am not concerned - mind you, I would be more careful with a kitten, as they DO tend to try out stupid stuff :p

Yes, it is especially true for kittens as they tend to be a little un-coordinated in the box and may step in their stool which would cause the litter to then stick to the paw......thus the licking....
I really never had a problem with my last cat 'Mikko', had him my whole life and we used clumping litter....I'm just glad he never licked his paws. You never know what they will do sometimes, I like to be on the safe side. Besides, seriously this wheat clumping litter smells so good!!
Now I'm on to training my kitten to COVER her poopy!! She just dumps and jumps outa the box and doesn't cover it up.....sigh.....

Ha!!Ha!! I'm pretty sure whatever you are imagining is exactly what I do........I bring her back over to the litter box after she has gone and show her with my hand how to cover it.......someday she will learn. .....sigh.....

My cat is nearly 16 years old now and has never covered his poopie. He does go through the motions, but not in the litter box. lol He scratches at the wall, turns around, sniffs his poopies, scratches on the wall again. Jumps out of his litter box and scratches on the floor before walking away. LOL Since he's getting old and possibly a little senile now, I've had to get a second litter box for him. I live in a 5 room apartment. Have always had his litter box in the back of the apartment just outside the bathroom. One day I caught him peeing on one of the throw rugs near my entrance door. This freaked me out and I learned he had done this more than once. Also, the lady that lives upstairs from me has 2 cats and one of them comes downstairs into the foyer if she leaves her doors open and since her cat knew there was a cat down here, he would pee near my door, marking his territory, and I guess my cat would smell it and that's why he was going near my entrance door. Poor cat. He seldom uses his old litter box anymore. Also, since he really doesn't cover his poopies, I do keep a scoop and flush just his poopies since I also do not use the clumping kind of litter. I have experimented with different brands and usually get Fresh Step.

I have also ordered a product called Urine Gone. It hasn't arrived yet, but sure hope it works as advertised in getting out any urine odors. I have been using an all natural spray called Citrus II, which a friend gave me. It's worked in my apartment as far as eliminating the odors, but the foyer still reeks of cat pee since I'm sure the cat from upstairs is still coming and peeing there. Has anyone else used Urine Gone? I'm curious as to whether it really does eliminate that odor.
