Zeus update

Well after having 2 good nights of rest with Zeus in bed with us (though 2nd night of Zeus in the bed was less restful for Devon than me), we decided to move Zeus to his kennel last night and vowed to stick it out. We got a ticking alarm clock and a water bottle type thingie. We put the clock inside of a pillow case and bunched it up. We wrapped the water bottle inside of Dev's t-shirt. We put a nice comfy blankie in his kennel and even left a toy in there. At 10:20 last night Dev put Zeus in the kennel and... he SLEPT till 5am as quiet as a mouse. I looked over at him when I got up to use the potty and found he had his head right on top of that alarm clock. He was terrific all night... no crying. Dev got up with him at 5am. He fed him, let him out, and played with him. About an hour later Zeus went back to sleep again in the kennel and again with NO problem whatsoever. He got up for the day about an hour and half later.

This method REALLY works!!!!

Terrific news, Marcy!!! I've heard of the alarm clock and hot water bottle method before, but I can't help but wonder if taking him to bed with you for those two nights didn't help him feel safe so he was less afraid and lonely when you gave him his new set-up.

Whatever, I'm just glad you can get some sleep AND have your bed back!

Zeus slept in his kennel from about 10:30pm to sometime in the middle of the night... I do not know what time Zeus woke up crying because Devon, fearful of the rolledup phonebook that awaited him or out of adoration for me (read it however you want ;)), got up with him and cared for him. All I know is that I got up around 9am and Zeus was in bed with us and we were all sleeping comfortably. :D

Sounds like things are settling down. Mine is sleeping all night in her crate, but there is a mess in there most mornings. It's not hard to clean up, and the extra sleep is worth the clean up the next morning!

Deb - I know i dont always follow the advice im about to give but everything ive read from EVERYWHERE says the pup should get outside during the night atleast once halfway through - its going to be harder and harder for you to break the habit your pup has for messing in the kennel the more he does it. You'll find you can crate train and potty train your puppy faster if you get him to stop going in the kennel. Zeus has messed in his kennel 3 times I think, this morning at some point he must have pee'd but usually he makes it till around 5am without any trouble, which is when he starts crying and i pretty much have to take him out. Actually, after last night (Let him out at 5am and then didnt get more than 20 minutes sleep at any one time because he wouldnt quit crying) I let him out at 3am and to avoid a VERY long night, put him in our other dogs kennel with his blankets and his clock since it is located downstairs. Im sure he probably wouldnt have cried too much in his own kennel but i know i got a much better sleep because of it.

Well Zeus is doing pretty well now in his crate from about 10ish each night till about 5am each day. All in all this is likely the best we can expect from such a lil baby. The good news is that Devon (Smiwi) is the one getting up with him and not me. Yay! Therefore, I can just keep the attorney on retainer and not actually use her yet. ;) :p

And yea... Zeus has worms... gross... ewwwww... gag
