kathyw 07-20-2005, 08:39 AM Idyllwild, California....rent a cabin...no phones, no computers, no tv...waking up when you want, taking your time...reading, writing, doing whatever you feel like...hiking to the top of a mountain and looking down at the beautiful view below.
Where do you go when you've "had enough"...when you just need to "get away from it all"....when you want to be alone...this is one of my favorite "secret hiding places"....I love hanging out in this little mountain town and clearing my head...have done it a few times...may have to do it again soon (lol)...What are your favorite places to go and just relax....where you go to just clear your head...?? What are some of the things you do to get a fresh perspective?
:)
fos4snt 07-20-2005, 08:50 AM Fresh Perspective? I paint, draw, create, destroy (demo work on home projects) or head to the darkroom.
To get away from it all? Considering I have kids, I go into the bathroom and lock the door for a breather. LOL. Usually, its them going off with my folks or their Dads and being HOME alone, like we are this week, that is the "get away" we really need to RELAX.
But, this weekend and again in two weeks when Amina comes back down to do the experimental dog meet (her dog and my ex's dog), we plan on going tubing down the Shenandoah River. AAAAHHHHHH that will be peaceful!!!

Philadelphia!!!!
What I do sometimes (particularly in the summer) is drive up into the hills near here (the Peak District) and take in some of the scenery.

Flyer 07-20-2005, 01:00 PM Death Valley, California. Not many people, very peaceful. I like to drive into the middle of the valley where there is not another soul to be seen for as far as you can see and just scream out. There are many places where one can be absolutely alone for hours to just think. I am a desert person and most people do not understand what I see in the desert. You're either a desert person or you're not. It's a very spiritual place. You feel like God can hear you there. When I'm there, I spend my time reading, drawing, painting, meditating, basically trying to figure out the reality of my situation and my next steps---but, of course, only in the autumn and spring months.

was designed by the firm who did central park way back when...and i just take in the nature. watch the hawks circle, hopefully see a deer with her fawn, and if i'm real lucky the resident red fox ;)
uprokbox 07-20-2005, 04:38 PM To get away from it all I go to a little place on the west side of Vancouver island in canada. rent a tiny little one bedroom log cabin on the beach and relax. No TV, No Phone. nothing just peace and quiet. awesome..
chooch 07-20-2005, 04:46 PM i go to the downtown district in the city i live in
hard to explain but it has a different atmosphere and lifestyle and personalities
rdhdnrs 07-20-2005, 05:05 PM To a campground in the Ouachita National Forest that my family has camped at since I was a toddler. It is so peaceful and affirming to camp in the same sites that I have been to for 40 years! There's a wonderful swimming place and lots of gurgly rapids to hang your feet in. I can get totally relaxed there. My kids love it, and I have been there all alone camping, too. It's one of my favorite places in the world.
In Your Eyes 07-20-2005, 05:09 PM I like to drive to Weehawken, a town right on the hudson river...and just park my car in the parking lot for this resturant called the Charthouse...and sit on the roof of my car and stare at NYC. I just find it relaxing, I feel like I can think. I think the Manhattan skyline at nite is one of the most beautiful things in the world. I know some people like to stare at nature in amazement b/c it is wonderful and God made it...but that's the feeling of bliss I get when I stare it this. It's so marvelous...and God made us humans and our ancestors were able to create that with their own sweat and blood. I just get embraced by it and loose my worries.
suicideblonde 07-20-2005, 05:48 PM Either my beach..... or my bed!

Christina--I totally understand this and all those who like a natural setting whether it be the seashore, mountains or desert. I even understand going outside the city to see the cityscape. What I don't understand is going into the city to find peace. Sorry, just don't get it. However, different strokes for different folks!

Science Goddess 07-20-2005, 05:59 PM Any large flat rock right down low, next to a secluded flowing creek. Or any large flat rock, just off of a secluded mountain trail. Alone.
Sardine Lake, northeast of Truckee. Love it there. Been going fishing with my family there since I was a little kid. Hiking, trout fishing, swimming hole, and lots of wine and food. It's just what the doctor ordered.
Wine tasting in Sonoma plus a massage and a facial. Add a couple of girl friends and life is good again!
The Mendocino Coast. Foggy, romantic, endless miles of beach sand to put your toes in.
Next up: A cruise. Don't care if I ever leave the ship...or the deck chair!
Rob..next time you're in Philly we can hang out!!!
I'm there Friday!!!!!!!!! And then I'll be there till the beginning of October, and I AM looking forward to it.... :D
I go to my beloved city and just take it in...sometimes just driving down Broad St. can be refreshing. I drive a lot when I need clarity...put on some good music, roll the windows down...and just drive...
I get that. I like to drive to get away from it all. Sometimes being on your own in your car seems to separate you from what's going on around you.
Ariel22 07-20-2005, 09:27 PM Lake Tahoe!!!!!! I love it there! I live about an hour away from there. I like to go there even just for a few hours and lay on the sand. I love to take a bicycle rides around there. And there's a river right by it....it's fun to take a raft ride down it.

NOW THIS SOUNDS RELAXING (especially the boating part..very relaxing and peaceful)!!! :D
London or San Diego. Each has its own vibe and beauty. On the coast you have sunshine and tranquility, and in London you can feel the history coming up through the pavement into you.

Yeah, the beach is a favourite of mine, but I don't often have a chance of going there, especially a quiet one. I think being on an empty, quiet beach at night, listening to the waves break is possibly the most relaxing place you can be.

I agree...the ocean definitely relaxes me...I think because it's such a large body of water...it makes all of our problems and worries seem so small in comparision...

the cemetary and walk some miles there.
I think this is a great idea... It doesn't get much more peaceful than a cemetary!!! :D
I'm going to give this a go at some point, FOR SURE.
I like to disappear into the bathtub. There is something about the atypical environment (quiet, watery & bubbly) that I find rejuvenating and this provides a fresh perspective.
I also like to take walks, but I find I like walking to a destination, so what I've tried to do is pick a tower or a landmark that sticks out above the trees (i.e. radio tower, or something like that) and then I walk to try and find the base of it. It gets me out of the house, and I have a destination.
DaBollocks 07-21-2005, 03:20 PM Yeah a cemetary!! Nice & quiet!! And ya might find a few old friends laying around!! Honk!! Honk!! :p :D
christina923 07-21-2005, 03:43 PM *LOL* yeah, two of my best friends are there, and most of my family ;) so yup, i got company there!
Sdoah1972 07-21-2005, 03:51 PM Well, my girls are 4 and 3, so I don't get much time for relaxing. Not even in the bathroom is there privacy :p
Currently, my relaxing times are when they go with their dad for the weekend, but back before I got divorced I actually took off one weekend and went to neighboring state, got a hotel and read, slept and swam the entire weekend. I have NEVER felt more rested and rejuvenated in my life. We all need some quiet time.
Loucine 07-22-2005, 12:40 AM There are two places. My bathtub and my bed.
When I was married and we had a house in the countryside, I used to go there mostly alone and stay for a week or two just reading, taking walks, watching the scenery and sitting by the fireplace in the evnings.
Next Monday I'm going with some friends to the high Sierras !!!! no phones, no computers, no cars or alarm clocks ! just the mountains and us and it's going to be perrrrrrfect :) I LOVE the mountains and I miss them !!!!
