I was referred to a surgeon yesterday for a vein in my leg. Has anyone had vein surgery and if so, which procedure? I'm skeered.

Surgery? How bad is it?

I have ITP (Immune Thrombocytopenia Purpura) and during pregnancies my varicosities were so bad that they were actually embossed on my leg and on my vulva, painfully protruding and throbbing with pain.

One doctor suggested surgery to reduce/remove them but it was not something I felt was necessary at the time and I managed with control tights until I gave birth the last time, then they subsided somewhat.

I still have throbbing pain sometimes and huge varicosities on the back of my right thigh and my right shin. I take the time to lift my legs when that happens or use a tensor bandage.

One doctor suggested I use alternatively, warm and cold packs on the site of the throbbing pain, and that I never massage the area. He said that if I have a small clot in the area that it could cause an embolism.

I would be afraid that surgery might make things worse :S I suggest that you get some second, third and fourth opinions, especially one from a hemotologist, before going ahead and agreeing to surgery.

It's something I might consider in the future if my varicose veins get worse but for now they are manageable.

I'm sorry you've got them, I know it can sometimes be really uncomfortable and it's a bit of an eye-sore. :(

Are you speaking spider or veircose (spelling?) ..........I have a friend that had spider veins that they injected with saline solution (?) to disolve the spidering. She had to wear ted hose type things for 2 - 3 days and said the pain was minimal.

My ex husbands new wife, had veircose veins from the age of 25, she is now 36 and had surgery a few months ago. She had MANY though, not just one. She said it was painful but the best decision she ever made.

If you tell me which you have or what type of surgery the md is suggesting, I can see if that's what she had and get more details for you.

Thanks, ladies!

This one I am referring to is a huge varicose vein on my inner thigh. It actually developed when I was pregnant with my daughter (18 years ago almost). It has alwasy stayed the same and was closer to my knee, but now it has started bulging up even higher. I also have a couple of spider veins and another smaller vericose on my calf. I hate them, blech! I have been reading about them and DVT and the possible risk of blood clots and so on. Just wanted to know if anyone had been through any of it. :(

I have some spider veins on the outside of my foot ......around the ankle bone, that are horrible .......I have been thinking about having them injected, but due to the kind / amount of work I do, and how active I am, it's not feasible at this time to stay off the leg for 2 - 3 days.

I think if they bother you enough, you should have them taken care of.
