Hi, folks...

Just curious to see how parents (and future parents) look at success for their kids.

Please choose an option from the poll, and feel free to comment.

Thanks

I used to be of the 'just go to college and get a good paying job' school of thought.

my son is now 22, and some quarters he remembers to sign up for classes, and some he doesn't.

my attempts to map out his life created major rifts between us that may never be healed.

I have since decided that plenty of 'good' and 'smart' and 'wonderful' people never went to college, and plenty of horrible hypocrites (and other nasty things) did.

i'd rather he was a good person, happy with what he is doing. and he seems to be there. one day he will probably finish-heck, i didn't finish my education until 1999

Catlover and Trish,

Hi, thanks for replying.

I'd like to hear your opinion about letting a kid take a year off after high school.

I think it probably would help a great many college-bound kids.....

But I know a lot of parents have this notion that somehow this is a dangerous subversive idea due to all sorts of potential distractions that could permanently sidetrack the kid.

My own understanding is that generally the economy doesn't offer much in the way of prosperous career choices to high school grads with no post-high-school training.....

So why not let kids take time off between age 18 and 19, and THEN go to college if that's what they need?

Any thoughts you ladies would like to share?

Well definatly go to college and get a great paying job... Although ultimatly HE is going to make that decision but my dreams are to have him truely be happy with a great education and a GREAT jog that HE LOVES.. No matter what it is!!

So I actually chose Janitor or Doctor because I just want my son to be happy... (but yeah be a doctor :P )

Well, I plan to do what my folks did... which was insist that my kids do 6 months of college and then decide. Our plan, though, is to have them done with HS (homeschool) by 17, so I can technicially "insist" they do one semester. Then they can choose to do college or not depending on how THEY feel about it.

IF they want to continue, they can and they have funds set up by me, Dad and the grandparents to help them afford it. IF they do not, once they are 18, they pay rent or are on their own. I will be here, of course, to help them as they struggle to walk on their own, but I will not carry them into their 30s like a LOT of parents around here do. Yikes. (Here, being where I love, not here as in ageless... LOL)
