greeneyedgirl 09-13-2005, 11:23 AM Footy buff lets finger fly
Sydney - An Australian professional football player said on Tuesday he plans to have one of his fingers amputated in an attempt to improve his game.
Brett Backwell, who plays Australian rules football for Glenelg, a suburb of the city of Adelaide in South Australia state, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) he has suffered from pain and restricted movement since he broke his left ring finger three years ago.
Doctors had suggested fusing the bones in the finger, but Backwell rejected the proposal.
He said he believed that amputating the finger was the only way to stop the pain and allow him to keep playing.
"To chop a finger off, that's a bit drastic," Backwell told the ABC.
"But I love my footy (football), and love playing sport, and if that's going to help me to succeed at this level then it's something you've just got to do."

Tuesday, September 13, 2005
ATHENS, Greece (AP) - An Athens mobile phone dealer has been arrested for allegedly selling thousands of amateur sex videos downloaded from cellular phones brought to his shop for repairs, police said Tuesday.
The arrest followed a sting operation on Monday in which the suspect allegedly transferred 183 pornographic videos to the cellular phones of undercover electronic crime squad officers for a total fee of $18 US, police said in a statement.
The footage had been recorded and stored by the dealer's clients on their mobile phones for private use. The files were allegedly transferred to the cellular phones of the arresting police officers via Bluetooth wireless connections. Thousands of such sex videos were also found stored on computer hard drives seized in the shop.
The suspect, who was identified only as a 44-year-old Greek, faces charges of distributing indecent material and breach of privacy, the police announcement said.

greeneyedgirl 09-20-2005, 11:19 AM 3 busted for theft after ringleader posts 'job' opening on online site
Three men were arrested for robbing a ticket shop after the ringleader posted a "job" offer on an online site, police said.
Tomoyasu Shinkawa, 33, an unemployed man from Tokyo's Kita-ku, posted his job notice on an online site in early March.
"We offer you 400,000 yen per job, but it's risky," the notice read.
After Yoku Shimoyama, 20, contacted Shinkawa, the two and another man visited a ticket shop in Shibuya-ku on March 13.
Thrusting a knife at an employee of the shop, they reportedly said, "If you shout, we will kill you. Open the safe."
Then they took about 2.6 million yen in cash from the safe and other goods such as digital cameras on display at the shop before fleeing.
Shimoyama received 400,000 yen for his efforts from Shinkawa after the robbery. But he turned himself in to the Yotsuya Police Station on Sept. 3, leading to the arrest of all three robbers, officers said. (Mainichi)

Car Theft Suspects Caught Gassing Up At Crime Scene
POSTED: 12:03 pm EDT September 22, 2005
UPDATED: 12:51 pm EDT September 22, 2005
PENSACOLA, Fla. -- If you're going to steal a gas station employee's car, don't come back an hour later to get a fill-up.
Investigators say that bit of logic escaped Artemio Castillo and Ernesto Garcia, who were arrested Tuesday night near the Parade gas station.
Employee Pam Pease, 49, was sweeping the parking area when she noticed a familiar car pull up to pump No. 7.
It was her blue 1994 Ford Escort with a missing hubcap. She had reported it stolen less than an hour earlier.
"It just blew my mind, but there they were," Pease said. "I'm glad it was low on gas."
Another attendant, Vince Nguyen, recognized suspects Castillo, 49, and Garcia, 41, both without known addresses, as the men who had asked him for a ride to Mississippi as he arrived at work shortly before Pease noticed her car was missing.
Nguyen asked the men in Spanish why they had returned and they replied that they needed gas, Pease said. He shut off the engine and offered the men water while other employees called 911.
The suspects fled on foot and Nguyen followed them through a back alley, Pease said. Two Escambia County sheriff's deputies and a police dog then took up the chase, catching one suspect in some brush and another across the street from the station.
The suspects remained Thursday at the county jail on grand theft auto and resisting arrest charges. Bond was set at $7.500 for each. Jail records did not indicate whether they had lawyers and interviews are prohibited. The public defender's office does not comment on pending cases.

greeneyedgirl 10-02-2005, 12:00 AM Man killed in alleged carjacking attempt of FBI agents
Saturday October 01, 2005
LOS ANGELES (AP) One man was shot to death and another wounded after they allegedly attempted a carjacking against two FBI agents who were conducting surveillance, officials said.
The FBI agents apparently were targeted randomly and the incident remains under investigation.
FBI officials Friday declined to identify the slain suspect pending the notification of his relatives. The identity of the wounded suspect also was being withheld, along with the names of two others who were arrested because they are minors.
Both agents were assigned to the FBI's Los Angeles field office. The agency did not disclose their names.
The bureau said in a statement that the two agents were in a parked vehicle in Reseda during an investigation of a violation of the Hobbs Act, which concerns extortion and robbery.
The agents were "accosted by four young male subjects, at least one of whom was armed'' about midnight and an altercation ensued when the four suspects allegedly tried to take the agents' vehicle, FBI officials said.
Authorities did not say how many shots were fired or how many individuals had guns.
The wounded suspect was hospitalized in stable condition. The other two suspects were in the custody of the Los Angeles Police Department.
FBI officials said a special team will investigate the shooting while local officials will consider criminal charges against the suspects.

BUDAPEST (AFP) - A fugitive who escaped from prison in Hungary was caught when he unwittingly went out on a date with a policeman, the national police said in a statement.
The unidentified man, sentenced for robbery and fraud, had posted an ad with his own photo in an online dating website.
He set up a date for Thursday at a pastry shop with someone who he thought was a woman.
"At the place of the rendez-vous the surprised man was caught and that is when he realized that the woman with whom he had exchanged emails and for whom he brought a ring was actually a man and on top of it a detective," the police said.

Woman says physician told her having intercourse with him would help
Updated: 7:53 p.m. ET Oct. 3, 2005
SEATTLE - An Oregon woman whose doctor convinced her that he could cure her lower back pain by having sex with her is suing him and his medical clinic for $4 million, according to legal documents obtained Monday.
The doctor, Randall Smith, who was 50 at the time, was stripped of his license and sent to jail for 60 days last year for charging the state’s Oregon Health Plan $5,000 for his 45-minute “treatments” involving the woman.
“Dr. Smith’s medical treatment included intercourse in which he told plaintiff was needed to help alleviate plaintiff’s lower back and lower extremity pain,” the former patient said in the lawsuit.
The lawsuit, which charges battery, negligence and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, was filed Friday in Multnomah County court.
“We never comment on lawsuits,” said a spokesman for the Adventist Medical Group clinic in Gresham, Ore., where Smith worked. Smith could not be located for comment.
Though he pleaded guilty to submitting false health care claims, a felony, Smith maintained the sex with the 47-year-old woman was consensual.

A FedEx driver had a special delivery for a Brooklyn man yesterday - 135 pounds of marijuana, police said.
Rudolph Hill, 43, allegedly dropped off the drugs to a waiting car and driver in Sunset Park while on the clock for the shipping company.
Police got a tip about the transaction earlier in the day and staked out a Dodge Durango in front of 150 49th St., sources said.
The driver of the car, 32-year-old Douglas Martin, received a cell phone call around 2 p.m. and, moments later, the FedEx truck pulled up. Hill passed Martin 10 parcels, sources said.
Both men were arrested and charged with criminal possession of marijuana, police said.

•Tech Support for Stolen Laptop
It had to be the dumbest customer-service call ever.
Lancaster County, Neb., sheriff's deputies say a man couldn't get a stolen laptop computer to work — so he called the manufacturer's toll-free tech-support number for help.
The IBM ThinkPad was reported missing after a rural home burglary Sept. 13, but there were few leads until IBM called, reports the Lincoln (Neb.) Journal-Star.
It turned out someone who wasn't the registered owner had failed in booting up the machine and called IBM's customer-service line, which still handles the calls although IBM sold its personal-computer division to China's Lenovo earlier this year.
When the caller gave the machine's serial number, support personnel realized it had been stolen and notified the authorities.
On Sept. 29, deputies executing a search warrant on a Lincoln home found both the ThinkPad and a pistol that had been stolen in Omaha in 1989.
They arrested Darrell Brown, 48, on suspicion of possessing stolen property.
greeneyedgirl 10-14-2005, 03:26 PM The speeding lie that cost £11,000

LIAR: Cath Bromley.A PROFESSIONAL couple are £11,000 out of pocket after they tried to dodge two £60 speeding fines by inventing a driver from Bulgaria to fool police.
The wife even flew to Bulgaria to send a postcard to her husband from the phantom driver.
Police exposed the "elaborate" web of lies of chartered surveyors Stewart and Cathryn Bromley, who dreamed up the Bulgarian in a complex scam to escape paying the fines. They claimed the man - named Konstantin Koscov - had been driving the family Mercedes when it was twice caught on camera breaking the speed limit near their home in Hyde.
As police grew suspicious, 42-year-old Mrs Bromley travelled the 1,400 miles to Bulgaria to send the faked postcard from the fictitious Mr Koscov to back up the story.
But investigating officer Pc Mark Beales was unconvinced and contacted Interpol and the British embassy in Sofia in an attempt to track down the driver.
Guilty
The Bromleys eventually admitted making up the story after investigators said they could find no trace of Mr Koscov.
Yesterday, the couple, from Moss Lane, Broadbottom, were ordered to pay a total of £9,200 in fines and £1,900 in costs after they pleaded guilty to two counts of perverting the course of justice.
Sentencing them at Manchester Crown Court, Judge Bernard Lever said: "The best place to hit people like these is in their pockets. Had they not pleaded guilty, I would have almost certainly sent them to prison."
The Bromleys' Mercedes was twice clocked speeding by a fixed speed camera in Dukinfield Road, Hyde, in January.
Instead of paying the two £60 fines, Mr Bromley, 43, wrote on his Notice of Intended Prosecution that neither he nor his wife was driving the car at the time.
LIE: The Bulgarian postcard.Employee
He said the driver was Konstantin Koscov, a former employee who had returned to his home in Bulgaria.
Mr Bromley was contacted by Pc Beales and soon after that he wrote to the officer saying he had received a postcard from Mr Koscov.
The postcard - which featured scenes from Bulgaria on the front - said: "Many thanks for the opportunity to work in your office. I enjoyed the experience and would gladly return the favor [sic] unfortunately my car is no where as good as yours but it will get you about!
"Many thanks again and look forward to my next trip. Regards Konstantin Koscov."
Speaking after the case, Pc Beales said: "We became suspicious because they were being too helpful providing this postcard to corroborate the story. The language on the postcard didn't ring true."
It was after making further inquiries in Bulgaria that Pc Beales discovered his suspicions about the existence of Mr Koscov were correct. His tenacity in pursuing the case was praised by Judge Lever.
Jail
Mr Bromley, who runs Bromley Associates surveyors in Hyde, was ordered to pay a £7,500 fine and £700 costs, while Mrs Bromley was ordered to pay a £1,700 fine and £1,200 costs as well as all defence costs.
If the fines are not paid within 28 days Mr Bromley faces a six-month jail term and Mrs Bromley a 40-day jail term.
Pc Beales said: "It was a very elaborate and dishonest attempt to escape paying a speeding fine. I think the lie went so far that they almost believed it themselves.
"They became so embroiled in it that it got out of control."
The Bromleys, who have a young son, live in a two-storey brick villa on a quiet country lane. Mrs Bromley refused to comment when approached by the M.E.N.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- A SriLankan Airlines stewardess called in a bomb threat because she wanted a day off, a newspaper reported Sunday.
Investigators traced the call and found that it was made from a mobile phone belonging to the stewardess' boyfriend, Colombo's Sunday Times weekly reported.
"The inquiry reveals that the stewardess had given the false alarm because she did not want to fly that day," it said.
The stewardess was fired, it reported.
SriLankan Airlines spokeswoman Ruvini Jayasinghe declined to either confirm or deny the report and referred the call to senior officials, who were not immediately reachable.
In recent months, two bomb threats forced aircraft to return to the ground in Sri Lanka.
On Oct. 3, a London-bound SriLankan Airlines plane returned to Colombo's international airport after a telephone caller said there was a bomb on board. The aircraft landed safely and no explosives were found.
On Sept. 8, one passenger was killed and 20 others were injured in a stampede to evacuate a Saudi Air plane at the same airport after a similar bomb threat.

POLICE say it was a case of dumb, dumber and dumbest when three friends were caught drink driving at Mill Park in Melbourne's north last night.
Police said a 30-year-old man had a blood-alcohol reading of .119, more than twice the legal limit, when he was stopped by a booze bus at Childs Road about 7.40pm (AEDT) yesterday.
A passenger in the car attempted to take over the driving but was intercepted minutes later and found to have an even higher blood-alcohol level.
The 26-year-old registered .134.
Police said both drivers already were disqualified from holding a licence.
Shortly after 9pm, the 33-year-old girlfriend of the second driver was on her way to pick up the men when she was intercepted by police.
"She registered a reading of .08 but at least was the holder of a full driving licence," Senior Constable David Fitzgerald said.
All three were charged with driving while under the influence and the men face various driving offences

greeneyedgirl 12-02-2005, 10:04 AM OnStar leads police to drunken drivers
By SUSAN FIELD
Clare Managing Editor
They found the "on“ button, but they couldn't turn it off, and it landed them in jail.
Brent Patrick Farmer, 25, of St. Charles, wound up in the Isabella County Jail after following his arrest for third-offense drunken driving early Thursday morning after an OnStar advisor led police to the Cadillac Escalade he was driving on U.S. 127.
His passenger, 35-year-old Denis Gavin Grant, of St. Charles, the owner of the Escalade, was arrested for allowing his friend to drive drunk and for having open alcohol in the sports utility vehicle, state police Sgt. Del Putnam said.
Farmer and Grant were in the Isabella County Jail late Thursday afternoon but had not been arraigned on the charges because they were still drunk as of 2:30 p.m., according to jail officials.
Farmer was being held on a $70,000 bond and Grant on a $6,000 bond, according to court records.
An OnStar advisor called Isabella County Central Dispatch at 4:15 a.m. Thursday in an effort to assist the men, who repeatedly hit the Escalade's OnStar button panel but would not talk to the advisor, Putnam said.
Fearing for Farmer's and Grant's safety, the OnStar advisor contacted emergency dispatchers, telling them the Escalade was traveling north on the highway near the Gratiot-Isabella County line, Putnam said. Because OnStar-equipped vehicles have global positioning systems, the advisor was able to pinpoint where the Escalade was, giving dispatchers the information they needed to direct state Trooper Scott Taylor to the vehicle, Putnam said. Taylor caught up with the red sports utility vehicle near the Summerton Road overpass, stopped the vehicle and arrested Farmer for drunken driving, driving with a revoked or denied license, having open alcohol and for resisting and obstructing police, Putnam said. Grant told Taylor that he was too drunk to drive, instead letting Farmer get behind the wheel, Putnam said. Farmer's blood-alcohol content exceeded .30 – the legal level for drunken driving in Michigan is .08, Putnam said. The "dazed and confused“ Farmer told Taylor that he and Grant were "just messing around“ with the OnStar button, Putnam said. "Sometimes, you get help that you didn't expect,“ Putnam said. Anne Mittelstaedt, a spokeswoman for OnStar in Detroit, said that the advisor followed protocol when she alerted Isabella County Central Dispatch after the emergency button on the Escalade's rear-view mirror had been hit repeatedly. When the advisor could not get either Grant or Farmer to talk, she notified dispatchers, Mittelstaedt said. While at times people accidentally push OnStar buttons, most people who hit the emergency button do so because they are in need of emergency medical or other help, Mittelstaedt said.

LANSDALE, Pa. (AP) - A man accused of burglarizing an auto-repair shop and stealing cash and a digital camera apparently didn't plan on a fresh snowfall.
Lansdale police said footprints in the new snow Tuesday led to the arrest of David J. Schild Jr. in connection with a burglary at Trails Automotive, where a window was broken and the building was ransacked.
"The footprints went right from the scene of the burglary to the front door where he lived, about a block away," Sgt. Dean Miller said. He said a pair of sneakers was found in the basement with a pattern that matched the footprints.
Miller said Schild admitted breaking into the garage. He was charged with burglary, attempted burglary, criminal trespass and possession of an instrument of crime, arraigned before Lansdale District Judge Harold Borek, and held in the Montgomery County Prison on $50,000 bail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled Dec. 16.
