rainbowstew 09-13-2005, 04:51 PM I would like to get everyone's thoughts on what are the best OW/YM movies they know of. I mean, ones that show a real sense of romance, attachment, appreciation, good communications, desire, caring, commitment, passion, and love, by both partners towards each other.
"The Graduate" is obviously one that is going to be suggested - however if you watch that, Mrs. Robinson is actually just using Benjamin, behind her husband's back, in a sleazy adulterous relationship, and that is not what I mean. There really isn't much inspiring about it.
I saw another one recently called "The Roman Spring Of Mrs. Stone", a Showtime production from the last couple of years. (There was also one of that title made back in the 1950s starring Warren Beatty, I think, and Vivien Leigh, but I haven't seen that one.) In it, Mrs. Stone, played by Helen Mirren, has a pretty intense relationship with a young guy who is actually a gigolo, but who likes her for herself and does not ask her for money (much to the dismay of his female "pimp"), but it doesn't really have a happy ending for the two of them.
The only one I can think of with any semblance of a happy ending is "White Palace".
Anybody else want to suggest any others?
may50 09-13-2005, 07:56 PM I also saw The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone and thought the ending was sad and depressing. I think I saw White Palace (was that with Susan Sarandon?) but it was quite a while ago and I don't remember it that well. I'm going to rent it again. Did you see How Stella Got Her Groove Back? That was about an OW/YM relationship. I can't think of any others.
rdhdnrs 09-13-2005, 11:38 PM Arizona Dream with Johnny Depp and Faye Dunaway.....classic OW/YM movie
Rozie 09-14-2005, 01:42 AM I enjoyed The Intended, w. Olympia Dukakis. Its a rather dark, depressing drama, but the parts that dealt with the OW/YM relationship rang very true and were beautifully acted. I posted a thread in Movies and TV reviews.
i'm sorry, but i'm going with "harold and maude..."
i love dark humored movies like that :P
Bella 09-14-2005, 07:43 AM The Letter, or the Love Letter, or whatever it's called with Kate Capshaw. Its a wonderful age gap success movie, and sweet. And plays on all the I'm totally crazy here fears we all had/have.
The book is way better though.
Tim, Mel Gibson, although he's also mildly mentally handicapped too, so it's not only age gap. But it's sweet too.
Nice to see ya Stew!!
I'll say Crush, because I saw it on TV earlier this year and thought it was real nice, although the ending was a bit sad. I keep trying to get my g/f to rent it on dvd actually, I missed the start, probably about 30 minutes, when I saw it.
Faith47 09-14-2005, 11:24 AM "How Stella got her groove back"
cool movie! :)
kyrie310 09-14-2005, 01:53 PM This one was good, I thought. It had "Tiger" in the title...something like Tiger by the Tail.... Ann Margaret was the OW, she was 40. The guy who played the YM, his name is Tom something....he played Pony Boy in the Outsiders. He was 19. It was sweet and I liked the ending. Does anyone recall this one? I will have to do some research and get back to you guys.
kyrie310 09-14-2005, 02:07 PM Ok...I got on Yahoo and found out the name of the movie. It's "A Tiger's Tale" with Ann Margaret and C. Thomas Howell. It's a good one.
"Matters of the Heart" was a made for tv movie in which Jane Seymour played a reclusive former concert pianist who tutors an 18 yo ym who has a great talent for the piano. They of course fall in love, and while I won't give away the ending, make sure you have a box of tissues handy if you decide to watch this one.
ToGirl 09-14-2005, 02:53 PM "Earthly Possessions" Susan Sarandon is the frumpy house wife who blossoms during her road trip across country with a younger man who kidnapped her. An ok movie. Susan is always good in anything she does.
special K 09-15-2005, 03:55 AM "Something's Gotta Give"...but the ending sucked ...however, in REAL life Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves have hooked up they say....loved all the scenes with them together in the film....him chasing her around the couch, telling her how beautiful she is in her black dress, adoring the ground she walks on, dismissing their age gap as nothing, etc. To me, it was ALL so realistic to the AGR's I've read about here, and have been in myself.
kyrie310 09-15-2005, 11:08 AM Yeah, Special, I was hoping Diane would wind up with Keanu at the end of the movie, too. I really enjoyed the scenes they had together. It did my heart good to see him so attracted to Diane when her daugher was there in the hospital waiting room and obviously eyeing Keanu.
Tim, Mel Gibson, although he's also mildly mentally handicapped too, so it's not only age gap. But it's sweet too.
I saw this movie, it was good. The book was even better. Probably worth watching again. :)
Kristin 09-15-2005, 12:48 PM "PS" - about a woman who's love dies very young and she meets a YM as a college admissions person who is the spitting image, has a similar name, similar artistic talent & seems to be a reincarnation of her love. Laura Linney & Topher Grace star in it. (Drama/Romance)
"White Palace" - a 27-year-old high flying advertising executive still recovering from the death of his wife. One night he is in a bar when he meets Nora Baker (Susan Sarandon) a 43-year-old waitress with a fixation on Marilyn Monroe. The couple gradually fall in love, though age and social differences mean that the path of true love is strewn with problems. Stars Susan Sarandon and James Spader. (Drama)
"How Stella Got Her Groove Back" - a young Jamacian's pursuits for successful, 40-something Stella turn into a hot and steamy romance that forces Stella to take personal inventory of her life and try to find a balance between her desire for love and companionship, and the responsibilities of mother and corporate executive. Stars Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs (Romantic Drama)
"Their Eyes Were Watching God" - a woman whose journey takes her through three marriages with very different men, and during which she experiences all that life has to offer, from tremendous success to unspeakable heartbreak. Her last love is a much younger man. Stars Halle Berry. (Drama)
"Something's Gotta Give" - A young doctor cares for a man who suffers a heart attack at the house of his young girlfriend's mother. While there, the elder man falls in love with the mom. The doctor also finds he has an attraction to her, despite their age difference. Stars Keanu Reeves, Diane Keaton & Jack Nicholson (Romantic Comedy)
"The Love Letter" - Helen suspects that her young hunk of an employee named Johnny wrote the love letter to her. With probably a thirty-year age difference, their romance would seem doomed except he thinks she sent him the letter. Passion easily overcomes their age gap. Meanwhile, others think the letter was written to them. Stars Kate Capshaw and Tom Everett Scott (Romantic Comedy)
"Crush" - Kate begins a fling with a handsome younger man (Doughty), less worldly than her friends but passionate and sincere, the other women can't simply be happy for the couple's unusual new romance. In jealousy they promptly take it upon themselves to break up the pair, taking drastic measures which result in unintended outcomes, some happy and (big warning) some tragic. Stars Andie MacDowell and Kenny Doughty (Romantic Drama)
"Harold and Maude" - After rejecting his mother's three attempts to set him up with a potential wife, and committing fake suicide in front of all of them, 20-year-old Harold announces that he is to be married to 79-year-old Maude. However, Maude has a surprise for Harold that is to change his life forever. Stars Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort (Comendy/Romance/Drama)
Other stories with OW/YM but not really romance:
"The Good Girl" - 30-something and married, Justine's mundane life takes a turn for the worse when she strikes up a passionate and illicit affair with an oddball discount-store stock boy who thinks he's Holden Caulfield. Stars Jeenifer Anniston and Jake Gyllenhaal. (Drama/Comedy)
"Tadpole" - Oscar confides in his best friend that he has plans for this vacation--he will win the heart of his true love. But there is one major problem--Oscar's true love is his stepmother Eve. Oscar is certain that he could be a better mate to Eve than his work-obsessed father. Stars Sigourney Weaver, Bebe Neuwirth and Aaron Stanford (Comendy/Drama)
"The Graduate" - a horrible, married woman seduces the son of her husband's business partner. He falls in love with her daughter and she forbids the relationship, ultimately trying to sabatoge the young couple and marry the daughter off to someone else. Stars Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft (Drama/Comedy/Romance)
~Guinavere~ 09-17-2005, 08:56 PM Dancing at the Harvest Moon--Jacqueline Bisset
This is a made for TV movie, so not the best quality, but I liked it.
Plot: A betrayed wife (Jacqueline Bisset), whose husband leaves her after 25 years, returns to the lake where she first fell in love and begins an affair with the son (Eric Mabius) of her first love.
intime 09-18-2005, 02:52 PM The Graduate is one of my all time favorites!!
Kristin 09-19-2005, 01:54 PM The Graduate is one of my all time favorites!!
OK, if you just liked it for the story and not the OW/YM thing, I get that. It was a pretty funny movie in and of itself.
But it's a horrible depiction of an OW/YM affair. The whole thing is just tawdry. It just makes OW/YM relationships look terrible. It would be a huge insult to call me a "Mrs. Robinson," as so many people refer to OW in AG relatonships. She was a disgusting, horrible woman.
theophanie 09-21-2005, 11:21 PM Hi all, just thought I'd drop in to mention Reckless with Francesca Anis (sp?) and Robson Green - nothing better for an older woman (late 40s) and younger man (early 30s) than this delicious morsel. It was on Masterpiece Theatre years ago and it was a 3 part (6 hour) miniseries. There was also a follow up special. They can be ordered through those PBS catalogues.
As you may know Francesca is the 19 year older woman who Ralph Fiennes left Alex Kingston for aout 10 years ago. They are still together.
intime 09-21-2005, 11:58 PM No, no not the age gap thing. I just love Dustin Hoffman. I think he's fabulous. Mrs. Robinson? That's a whole other story.
charo 09-22-2005, 12:33 AM I just loved White Palace. As for How Stella got her groove back, ehh LOL
Im with Kristin on The Graduate. Havent seen There Eyes were watching God, but will make a point to get it.... I can relate to that one I think :p ............
also some of those others you listed Kristin look interesting, thanks for the list.
yellowrose 09-22-2005, 03:58 AM The Last Pictureshow
Summer of '42
Luna (very disturbing...)
jetstream 09-25-2005, 05:39 PM Kristin, I love your movie catalog. I was trying to remember the name of the movie that now I remember is "PS." That's a great OW/YM example. Neither seemed too hung up on the age difference, did they. (I guess it was the larger issue of the movie that was of more concern!)
The remake of "Alfie" with Jude Law -- among his succession of conquests is a much older woman, of course played by Susan Sarandon. She's one he's interested in, and when he comes back to try again with her she's replaced him... by an even younger man. In fact, the dialogue in that part of the movie—it's actually kind of disturbing—Alfie is begging her to tell him what the new man in her life has that he doesn't. She finally gives in and answers, "He's younger than you." Yikes! But Alfie's a real womanizer. You feel a little sorry for him but not too because he's using women all over town. Susan Sarandon's character actually tosses him a pretty wicked curveball.
jetstream 09-25-2005, 05:44 PM Kristin, also thanks for the keychain! (Sorry off-topic but had to try it!)
Jasmine54 10-14-2005, 10:40 AM These two get my vote. They've both been mentioned here. Crush does have a sad ending.. which is not at all what you are hoping for by the time you've gotten to that point....
Prime should be cute.. the one coming out soon with Uma Thurmond and Meryl Streep....
tinydancer 10-14-2005, 10:56 AM Well, I had the opportunity to watch the new movie coming out on Oct. 28th called "Prime", it was not bad but the ending, although expected, was kinda sad.
Still, I am going with "Harold and Maude"........ I hope to be just like her when I am her age.
Blessings, Tinydancer
terminal 01-26-2006, 09:56 AM i think when you talk about ow ym movies the graduate leaps to the mind...and in my opinion ITS A CLASSIC...awesome stuff...it spoke to a whole generation

skatergirl 02-07-2006, 01:26 PM "Crush" with Andie MacDowell
"School of flesh" (L'ecole de la chair) in french, don't worry it's r rated. with Isabelle Huppert.
"Children of the Century" (Les Enfants du Siècle) in french the true story between george sand & alfred de musset, with juliette binoche.
i, for one have always disagreed with mrs. robinson being a classic ow/ym tale, are u kidding me? that's love?
i think these films i have listed are far more indicative of the love & passion, as well as the heartaches that we have shared.
terminal 02-08-2006, 09:19 AM come on skatergirl we are talking about the graduate here////a whole generation has grown up on it ...ITS ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME...AND what a ow ym tale...

Dragon Crone 04-27-2006, 08:02 AM Harold & Maude is my all time favorite. It's funny, compassionate, & sad.
Is this movie available on DVD?

DeMoRaLeS 05-01-2006, 12:19 AM .....although predictable in parts, i would hafta say prime with uma thurman is a good one that i just got on dvd. i was pleasantly surprised with it.
i must confess the only other one i have seen is how stella got her groove back.....ive lived an uneducated life
skatergirl 05-01-2006, 01:18 AM come on skatergirl we are talking about the graduate here////a whole generation has grown up on it ...ITS ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME...AND what a ow ym tale...
i know but for me it does not represent what my experience has been with younger men...
and personally i like movies that i can relate too...
when i watched it it wasn't like he was that into her, she practically forced him and then he left her at the end anyway...
but hey, if you like it, right on...
it's just not 4 me.
I agree with Joel about Harold and Maude. I also loved "Their eyes are watching God." the Oprah movie with Halle Berry. After being with a couple of older, unpleasant men, she finally finds true love with a youger guy. it's a tear jerker.
