Odd Even 09-14-2005, 07:12 AM I saw some remark here that a woman rather wants to be called "beautiful" than "hot".
Now, English isn't my native language and I'm not sure what "hot" really means in this context. What does it mean to say "Wow, she's hot!"
Does it mean that she is beautiful, or sexy, or h*rny, or what?
(I suppose it doesn't mean that she's literally got a high temperature :) )
Regards,
Erland
greeneyedgirl 09-14-2005, 07:19 AM beautiful, sexy, attractive, desireable
Harrison 09-14-2005, 07:25 AM In addition to Greeneyedgirl's comments, I would add this: "Hot" is slang, and therefore it is not formal or proper English.
Another example would be to say: "broad" or "chick" instead of "woman" or "young lady."
In Your Eyes 09-14-2005, 07:28 AM To me if a guy is just like "Damn, you look hot" especially if I am in sexy clothes, I feel like he just is refering my body. Where as someone calls you beauitful, it is more of a proper compliment and I feel beautiful all over my body, face and as a person. Hot is not a bad thing, but lots of guys girl lots of girls hot. When someone calls you beautiful it means a lot more.

I don't mind when my husband calls me hot but NO ONE ELSE....
However Broad and Chick is so degrading... but I agree with the definitions...

haha now everyone knows part of the reason I need to date an OM
Where I dwell, BROAD is in the every day vocabulary of almost every guy under 25
greeneyedgirl 09-14-2005, 07:38 AM the only place i've EVER heard the term "broad" is on tv. usually uttered by someone of northern descent ;)
"girl" is the common terminology for a female here in the south.....damn girl, mmmm girl.
not in the 'she's a little girl' type way either, just as another slang term
thesedays 09-14-2005, 07:58 AM Yeah ......it's "girl" here also. I have never heard anyone use the term "broad" ........unless there referring to someone wide.
I don't mind the term "chick" ........depends on who's using it and how they're using it .........it's usually the surfers and/or skaters around here that use that word .........but not in a degrading way.
Personally, I don't mind the word hot ............I thought my ex was hot ........everything about him was hot ..............except his personality !!!

Ooo trust me broad exists and it's really annoying. It is not really something you say to someone's face as much as it is something you say ABOUT someone. Like if a group of guys are at a club they might point at a girl and say "that's a hot broad" or if they see an ex they might say "damn, he comes that stupid broad i hate her". It doesnt make it any nicer to hear it, a lot of my guy friends say it about people in my presence. No one has personally ever called me that to my face. Just like "chick" can be considered skater termonology, I guess broad is like guido terminology.
Another REALLY annoyng term guido dressing guys have for women around here is "monster". They mean it in a good way, but I think it's stupid. It's refering to women they think look the right way: tan, thin, dressed heat to toe in designer stuff, jewlery, french nails. They'll say "Damn she's a hot monster" I think it's dumb personally.
I don't mind when Dereck tells me he thinks I'm hot, because he also tells me he thinks I'm beautiful. Freely...
If any guy ever referred to me as a broad however, I would completely ignore him. That is such an ugly term, right up there with b*tch and bag.
jellybean400 09-14-2005, 02:10 PM Sexy....
as in a person, act, look, whatever... :)
Kristin 09-14-2005, 03:01 PM "Chick" is OK. Women here even say "chickie" to each other like, "Hey, Chickie, how's it going?"
"Hot" is OK, too. If someone said I was hot I'd take it as a compliment.
"Broad," on the other hand, is like "my old lady" or "b*tch". Not complimentary at all.
skatergirl 09-14-2005, 03:30 PM Well...to me, if I think a guy is "hot" it means that he elicits major feelings of desire!!
1love 09-14-2005, 04:03 PM People really say broad? I thought that was a term that went out in the 70's, or whenever it went out.... it sounds like something you would hear in old gangster movies.
Hot is ok but I think beautiful and gorgeous are preferable. I don't call guys hot, I say gorgeous or beautiful... although I'm not sure if guys want to be called either of those. :p
Oh and most females are "girls" to me... from myself to my boss, who is 58. I call everyone at my two jobs "the girls at work". I really have never liked to say "woman" or "women".... not sure why. :)
Chatterbox 09-15-2005, 11:45 AM "Hot" means something or someone that incites desire or something that one hopes will incite desire. For instance, cars are referred to as hot because men desire them and they hope women will desire them in them. Women buy hot lingerie and clothing because they desire them and hope that men will desire them in them. I think this comes from the idea that when our sexual desire is "inflamed" our temperature rises.
When used for women or men "hot" usually means "you arouse my sexual desire" or if the relationship is platonic, "you arouse (will arouse) someone else's sexual desire." Generally, men will aways be pleased to be called hot, but a female will react to being called "hot" depending on her preconception of it's meaning, the situation, AND whether she wants the person saying it to perceive her in that manner.
And, since American is always confusing:
- "Hot" is also used when referring to something that has been stolen and is no longer in possession of the correct owner, so a "hot car" can mean a "cool car" (now THERE'S a dichotomy for you!) or a stolen car. This goes along with the warning that a stolen item is "too hot to handle" and if you buy it and get caught, you'll "get burnt."
Note: Saying that a person is too hot to handle and warning that to interract them will result in one's getting burnt are warnings of negative consequences.
Note: Ideas that are cool are always viewed positively, however, people can be "cool" as in unapproachable or "cool" as in hip and with-it or easy going and likable.
- "Hot" also refers to an idea or item that is skyrocketing, selling fast, sure to catch on quickly, also referred to as "on fire".
- "Hot can also be used to describe an uncomfortable situation, such as "Man, it's hot in here," which can mean that the temperature is uncomfortably warm or that the person is uncomfortable being there.
Note: "This place is cool" is usually good, but it can also be used to indicate that it is an unwelcoming place.
Note: Cool, with regard to temperture, can be a pleasant temperature, or a too cold temperature.

I've heard older guys, who were obviously around in the 70's, lol, refer to girls as 'broads'. Yucko!
Hot is ok but I think beautiful and gorgeous are preferable. I don't call guys hot, I say gorgeous or beautiful... although I'm not sure if guys want to be called either of those. :p

Same here! Everytime I'm referred to as 'woman' I get this funny feeling like it isn't me or something. I don't know how to explain it other than that. So I usually don't like using it when addressing another gal, unless I know she prefers it.
Chatterbox 09-15-2005, 01:59 PM Aren't words interesting???? In some languages, when a man is annoyed with a female, he begins the sentence, "Woman,...." but, for me, the statement that follows never has the desired chastizing effect because I just melt when a man addresses me as, "Woman." :p
In Your Eyes 09-15-2005, 02:33 PM *ROTFLMAO*
That just may be the stupidest, lamest, most my- eyes-are-rolling-when-I-hear-it slang word I have ever heard. I mean, damn....I'm at a loss right now. Horrible. *L*
I agree. At least you don't have to live in the presence of it lol.
Kristin 09-15-2005, 02:51 PM "Jawn?" Ok, that's a new one for me! Where did that come from?
chooch 09-15-2005, 07:51 PM hot
