joelstrouble 09-14-2005, 11:16 AM Two years ago I stopped smoking and with that I gain quite some weight... but still I do not consider myself as fat... chubby, yes, but not fat...(I use 12 and 14) so yesterday I went on sale and I tried on some pants and I needed the sizes XX-L and X-L  That kinda took off the fun out of getting two nice pants and a shirt on sale :(
So If I'm a size XX-Large, then what do people that really are overweight wear and where do they get their cloths?
We have one chain that is called Bik Bok here in Norway and their Large size is equal with size 10 or 12  I thought size 10 would be a pretty thin woman, but no; according to that chain you are a LARGE woman.
In Your Eyes 09-14-2005, 11:19 AM I hate the sizes of clothes!! I wear an 8 and my boyfriend won't believe me. He is like "You're skinny, isn't 8 supposed to be big?". It's not fair how small they make some of the freakin stuff. When stuff is just sized by letter I wear either medium or large, it depends on the store. And he says the same thing "You can't be a large, you're tiny" But I seriously am. You need to be a stick these days to wear a small.
christina923 09-14-2005, 11:20 AM don't even try to figure out the sizing..there is no standard! larger women go into the 1x,2x, 3x etc...
do not be discouraged...i run into the same thing. sizing varies with manufacturer
fos4snt 09-14-2005, 01:20 PM It sure does vary! Went into Kohls a couple weeks ago (told this story in another thread) and tried on 15 pairs of size 8 jeans which varied from enormous TENT like structures on me to too tight to get up past my thighs.
And no one would EVER call me tiny... Most assuredly NOT at 5' 9" tall and 135-145 lbs (my weight fluctuates within this zone EVERY month), which is typically a size 8 here in the states. TINY is those paper thin girls who wear size 1 and are 4' 11" tall and barely weigh in at 100lbs. And even then, if they have ample cleavage, it can be deceiving and make them look bigger then they are...

Peachy 09-14-2005, 01:26 PM Boy have you ever hit on one of my pet peeves!!!
I have been on a tear about the sizing of women's clothes for quite a few years now. We woman need to revolt and insist that women's clothing be sized as men's clothing is sized.
If a man wears a size 34x36 pants, it doesn't matter what country he is in, a size 34x36 is that same size. Same with their shirts with collar and sleeve sizing.
If women's clothing had the same type sizing, it wouldn't matter what brand we bought, it would be the same size. And you would think they would figure this out. More women would be likely to purchase via the internet and catalog if they knew they were going to be receiving their size. Why don't the clothing manufacturers see this???
fos4snt 09-14-2005, 01:32 PM Cuz they want you to buy clothes that DON'T fit and keep it in your closet. More money to them. Women are notorious for thinking it's THEM and not the manufacturers.
This is why for about 10+ years I only bought mens jeans (I still love them!! BOOT cut Levi's!) And I'm a happy 30 x 32 in mens jeans and still wear several pair I have. They aren't waist sizes, tho, but hip sizes on women because the inseam is different. ;)
Hell, let's boycott and only buy mens pants. :p I'm game!

Peachy 09-14-2005, 01:35 PM Ahh, but that's the problem Fos . . . men's pants don't have any waist. So if you get them to fit the hips, you have all the bunch under the belt!!!
Maybe we should just revolt and cease to wear clothes altogether!! :p
Inahnia 09-14-2005, 01:39 PM I hate that too....but in men's pants, if they go over my big butt, they are WAY too big in the waist :(. One manufacturer's small is another one's medium..the size charts quote a measurement of your bust, waist and hips...but if I go by that the stuff is usually huge on me, because they build in so many inches of "ease" that the measurements are not accurate.....so you just have to guess.
fos4snt 09-14-2005, 01:45 PM Ahhh... therein lies the problem, I guess. I don't wear pants which go to my waist. Never have. Which is why I wore mens jeans for so many years. BIG old hip belt and I have a long torso, so the way mens pants are designed the inseam is usually perfect for me and the "waist" ends up right high on my hips... like the women's hip huggers... :D
We're all built SO differently...

Jo-Admin 09-14-2005, 01:49 PM I agree Peachy! It makes ordering online so much more difficult!
And JT, I hear ya. I wear a 6 or an 8 (depending on the clothing line), and usually thats a medium, but sometimes it can be a large as well. I bought some shorts not long ago in a medium..and couldn't even begin to squeeze into them. It doesn't seem to me an 8 should be a "large".
Back when I was much much younger (and much more unhealthy), around 20 or so, and only weighed something like 95 or 100 pounds, I wore a size 1 or 3 and had a hard time finding them. I used to go to a store that specialized in small sizes to find jeans. Now when I take my daughter shopping (and she is 14, so it's okay for her to be this small) I find 1's and 3's all over the racks!!!
I think it's a shame to see girls teens idolize, like Lindsay Lohan or Nicole Richie, go from nice healthy bodies with curves to these stick-thin anorexic-looking bodies.
I got off track there, but it's my pet peeve too.
(btw..Im only 5' 1-3/4 ", so Im NOT a stick)
And while we are on the subject, why are dress sizes different than jean sizes? I can wear a size 6 jean, but I can't even begin to squeeze into a size 6 dress.
joelstrouble 09-14-2005, 01:49 PM Hell, let's boycott and only buy mens pants. :p I'm game!
I wish I could do that, but I really hate wearing jeans, and other kind of mens pants wouldn't exactly do it... I'm more comfy in skirts... maybe I should start wearing kilts :p
I gotta tell ya, I left my jeans on the floor overnight in the wrong place and when Dereck got up for work in the morning he was trying to pull them on, thinking they were his. He said at first he couldn't figure out why the H he couldn't get them past his knees! LOLLOLOLOLOL! And he's got a skinny butt, just goes to show how we're made different.
Science Goddess 09-15-2005, 10:05 AM As Phos said, the range of fluctuation for 10 pairs of the same size jeans is ridiculous!
I was trying on jeans the other day and had the experience that many of us have most of the time...tried on several pairs, determined to leave with a new pair and failed. Even with the low cut pants these days, they're cut so straight that they don't accommodate curves that might occur below the waist.
Forget shopping online, unless I already have a pair JUST like them at home. I am so envious of people that can shop online.
Shirts...button-down shirts...very difficult when you're a small person with breasties because the slightest gap or pop between buttons looks SO tacky. In order for the placket to lay flat, the waist is usually floating and not flattering. I usually have to opt for tank and sweater sets or some type of pullover.
I'm with Aina, although I prefer dresses to skirts but either over pants. When I catch myself wearing pants too much, I run for the girlie stuff. However, dresses just seem to be disappearing from stores these days. I even ask sales clerks and they look almost puzzled by the request. I've had a couple of stores tell me 'We don't carry dresses', and several point me toward the 2 or 3 that they might have. And as far as sizing, I have no idea who they're cutting these dresses for. The armpits are barbie doll size (meaning the straps or that part of the dress is cut way too short between top of shoulder and armpit), and there is no waistline. Forget about if the waistline fits having the bustline fit. I need to win the lottery and hire a private dressmaker.
Inahnia 09-15-2005, 10:12 AM LOL Lynn! Almost the same thing happened to my husband one morning. We were getting ready to go out to the store, and he came into the room with a pair of jeans on saying, "Man, have I gained weight or something? These didn't used to be so tight in the waist!" I looked at him and said, "Honey....those aren't your pants. You don't own any Levis...those are mine!" It was sooo funny!

LOL guys are so hilarious sometimes. Most of them don't pay as much attention to clothes as we gals do. I don't think I could ever mistaken any of his clothes for mine, although I purposely wear his stuff. I love wearing his A-shirts, or one of his big sloppy T's to sleep in. And his warm thick socks on cold mornings.
Hehe, have you ever tried to get your guy to try on something of yours? :p I have a pair of cutesy turtle pj's that I coerced Dereck into trying on once. LOL it was hilarious.
Oh gosh, I hope he doesn't see this thread....... *cringes*
