The first petition had an immediate impact! Please take a moment to sign this one to protect animals in future disasters as well as fund the relief efforts of current disasters. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/256230705

First of all, I am deeply sorry for the human and animal losses due to Katrina. However, I do not think it is reasonable to expect that animals be granted the same evacuation rights as their owners. If there is time and resources, by all means please evacuate the animals, but in case of an emergency, sadly, animals must give way to humans.

I, for example, when married had a dog and a cat. My dog (he is still with my ex)is a boxer and occupies the same space as an 8 yr old child. He is horrible at following instructions when he is nervous. I love my dog, but I would hate to know that the time and effort spent on evacuating my dog cost a child his life because he could not evacuate on time.

Also, some families have multiple large pets. Who is to decide which pet is evacuated and which is left to die? Should all pets be evacuated? What about exotic birds in cages with different nutritional needs? I suppose the lawmakers must work on standards that take all of the above into account.

I understand your point of view BUT an animal is a family member in my eyes. When someone have an animal and he loves him, who is to decide whether that animal should stay behind?! and I think its inhuman.
I would NEVER leave my cat behind. NO WAY!
Just the tought of leaving an animal behind to himself during a tragedy....gives me the chills.
I'm an animal lover. To me, its unacceptable.

I knew that my comment would bring disagreement because, as I understand, the US culture places great importance in their pets. You can see that in movies.

I just think that evacuating all pets would double (at least) the logistical resources required for an evacuation. With enough money doubling material resources should be no problem for a country like the US, the problem is when there is no time in case of an emergency. You cannot buy time.

There are disasters that give you enough warning, others dont. In that case I think humans should be evacuated first.

I also have a cat. She is my companion. I would hate to abandon her. But if I have to chose between her and a total stranger for evacuation, I would chose the human stranger with tears in my eyes. I would also hope that this stranger choses me and my son instead of his pet doberman and his parrot. Now if it was between my cat and my ex... hmmmm...

Just kidding. :p

I understand what u saying Sheila. Make sense too. Of course, there is certain situations that sometimes you might not have a choice. But thats extremes. Its usually middle ground.

For those that agree that there should be evacuation plans for pets, please take a minute to sign the petition. Don't be afraid to put your e-mail address in as required, they don't give it out. They only e-mail I received was to notify me of a petition related to the first one I signed. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/256230705[/QUOTE]
