That actually looks like a really cute movie. We don't go to the movies much..(we prefer to wait and rent them...more comfortable at home, more snuggling. :-) but that might be a cute "date movie".
If you see it before we do, let me know how it was!!

Steve Martin is just awesome and that's all there is to it!

Not to keep harping on the gold digger thing....
But why does the OM character have to be wealthy in order for there to be a contest between him and the YM?
Just a thought.

I think they are usually wealthy for 2 reasons: A) It's a movie, and movie's need extremes and conflicts to work
and B) Even in real life, most 50 year old guys should be more established than say a 22 yr old guy. If a 22 yr old guy is broke a lot of people use the excuse "he just is starting out he'll find his way". But if someone is 50 with no money and no career, what woman wants to date a man like that? Not saying he has to be RICH but by that point should be established doing something, some sort of at least sound occupation. Like my dad for instance is not rich, but has been working the resturant industry for over 20 years. By 50 people who are worth dating should have at least accomplished something along they way.

Granted, my information on this comes from a brief movie review I saw on CNN, but it was described this way, "Claire Danes must choose between handsome young man or much older MILLIONAIRE."
Of course an older person should be more established than a younger person...that's a no brainer. But if the character truly is a millionaire, then we're not just talking about even your slightly above average OM. I find this sort of assumed "dilemma" insulting to both. It suggests that younger women are likely to be influenced by money AND that older men can only be interesting to younger women if they are loaded.
I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know the complexities of their relationships. Hopefully, it's not actually that simplistic. This was just my superficial thought upon hearing a few sentences about it on the television.

everyone is entitled to an opinion...but as someone who has taken several film classes the "Rich middle age man comes along on a white horse" theme is just a reoccuring thing that sells as a storyline. Just like "two half naked girls alone when a killer breaks in" or "the poor girl who gets rich by the end of the movie"
I don't think it is meant to offend or stereotype, people in general are facinated by rich characters in movies, piss poor characters can be as equally intriguing. it's the extremes that are so different from the lives of the audience.
