HOUSTON - Many people treat their pets like children, but a woman is in legal trouble after calling 911 and claiming that her "baby," which turned out to be a cat named Baby, was stuck in the sewer.

The woman, who was not immediately identified, called the Houston Fire Department three times saying that her cat was stuck in the sewer, according to police. On the fourth call the woman said her 2-year-old baby was stuck in the sewer.

The firefighters arrived expecting to find a child, but rescued the feline from the sewer anyway. Police gave the woman a ticket for making a false report, a Class B misdemeanor.

"They said they were desperate, didn't know what else to do," Houston Fire Department Capt. Keith Ellery told Houston television station KPRC. "They didn't know who else to call so they called 911. It is not the type of rescue we normally do ... but on this particular incident, we felt compelled to kind of help them out."

Members of the woman's family tried to rescue the cat themselves before calling for help.

My question is why couldn't she get the help she needed the first time she called?! People shouldn't have to lie to get some help for their pets.

I agree. If they are not busy helping humans at the time, they should have no problem helping somebody's pet.

Well at least they rescued the cat! In Peru nobody does anything to help animals.

When I was living at home with mom, I was just over 18 I think, we had a cat named Rigel, who was a siamese/alley cat. Rigel disappeared for a week and we went out over the neighborhood calling him. I heard him meow once or twice, but I never saw him. Finally I did the same thing the next day and looked up: he was stuck in a tree! As odd as it seems, cats typically can get down from a tree if they can get up into it. I guess it frightened him so bad he thought he couldn't. So we called the fire dept. They came with the truck and put a ladder Underneath where the cat sat, and lo and behold the cat climbed farther up the tree! As a matter of fact, he climbed all the way to the top of a 50 foot tree. And when the fireman got near him, he JUMPED to the ground, all 50 feet, and hit the grass running and then hid! We called and called but this time he would not come out. My mom tells the story that she heard the rain about four days later and thought "well maybe rigey will come home" and she opened the door to look for him and there he sat! A lot worse for wear, and hungrier looking than he'd ever been. The moral of the story is that fireman aren't professional cat rescuers and you might be better off calling animal control!
