vivalagourami 12-13-2005, 09:40 AM Every one and their grandmother gave this movie a glowing review. I was thinking of going to see it but I can't help thinking I'm going to be severely dissapointed. Ang Lee is pretty good, but Larry McMurtry did the screenplay. Think Last Picture Show.
Heath Ledger has been in nothing that even came close to being good, except I think he had a small part in Monsters Ball which was alright. And Jake Gyllenhal is pretty much a pretty face.
Anyone see this movie yet? I guess it topped the Golden Globe noms today. I know the globes are only the Oscars light...
Lassoe me tender...

kittylane 12-13-2005, 07:50 PM jake gyllenhal is absolutely gorgeous, its not about a pretty face thing with him, something about his soul comes pouring out in every movie i have ever seen with him. i cannot wait to see this movie, the consequences of not acting or acting on love.... i think it will be fantastic and will let you know by the weekend how it was. CANT WAIT!!
greeneyedgirl 12-13-2005, 08:34 PM am i correct or wrong in thinking that it's about two gay cowboys?
*gah, there's no easy way to word that question*
vivalagourami 12-13-2005, 09:47 PM Yeah, the gay cowboy movie.
There was a fairly decent movie on the subject that came out in the late 90s called Far From Heaven or something like that. About a gay suburban family man in the 50s. I would reccomend it.
jesique 12-13-2005, 09:53 PM A Gay Cowboy movie?
I just don't think this one's gonna be a blockbuster. Sorry.
Heath Ledger's dang hot though. Mmmm.
Nadine.

I don't know, Jesique. It's *romantic* and you know you ladies luuuuuv that! :p
jesique 12-13-2005, 10:16 PM Harrison...
Gay Cowboys are not romantic. Not to mention I don't like cowboy movies that much. Blah.
Are dudes going to go see it?
Nadine.

Heath Ledger was great in a Knight's Tale i love that one. However gay cowboys just isn't my thing now if they were Eva Longoria and Kirsten Dunst then i would go see it.
kittylane 12-14-2005, 01:08 AM hmmmmm. i have this notion that God made us all different for the very purpose we are supposed to love eachother. because we are all his creation.
if i had not acted on a leap of faith with taking a chance with my husband, i KNOW for the rest of my life i would have lived with regret, so i can relate to this story.
its not about the "gayness" that i am dieing to see the movie, i love the actors and also the best love stories are those of unrequited love, they are the most bittersweet stories.
romeo and juliette theme, adam and i went to juliette's house in verona and revisited the story... anyway, i hope this movie is as good as i think i could be.
Harrison 12-14-2005, 08:14 AM Harrison...

Ah, ah, ah! Your non-Texan roots are showing! You mean to say that you don't get a little hot at the thought of tight Wrangler jeans wrapped around cowboy butts? :p:
Are dudes going to go see it?
Some will. I want to see the movie. There are gays in western/rural/hick communities just like in all other cultural/ethnic groups, so I want to see how they handle it.
Should be interesting!
vivalagourami 12-14-2005, 08:20 AM Yeah, kittylane...that's what all the reviews are saying.
I will probably see it. I like Larry McMurtry and I like Ang Lee. It cant be any worse than some of the other movies out there.
DaBollocks 12-14-2005, 08:45 AM HOMOSEZYEEHAW!!? Scary!! And if y'all know anything about gay slang the name of the movie is way too close to "barebacking" YIKES!! Not a pretty thing!! All we need now is Sean Penn in here somewhere & we're all set!!! Weeeeeeeeeehoooooooooooo!!! Me nerves!!

vivalagourami 12-14-2005, 04:28 PM Yeah, when I first saw the movie poster...I was like...dude, that HAS to be about gay cowboys...
Why would anyone make a gay cowboy movie and put the name "Brokeback" in the title....sounds like a porno though don't it.

Hey hey now....shhhh about my non-Texas roots. I may not have been born there...but I got there as fast as I could!!! :D
As for a man's bum in a tight pair of Wrangler Jeans....MMMMMMMmmm!!!!
But what good does it do me if he's gay?!!!
Nadine.

What good does it do you??
Two words, Jesique: Window shopping. :D
It's a movie about two cowboys
Of manly love, frank but still cloys
It is named about a mountain called Brokeback
It broke some tracks but still full of bric a brac....
jesique 12-16-2005, 12:59 PM What good does it do you??

Blah Harrison...
If I wanted to window shop that bad...I'd just go to the mall!!! :D lol.
Besides...didn't 50 cent just do a song about how un pimp it is to be a "window shopper?" You know I don't wanna be un-pimplike. *grin*
Nadine.
kittylane 12-21-2005, 07:42 PM this movie has limited release, i live in fort lauderdale so you would think it would be here, it actually is in an artsy place downtown, hopefully it is not because of the gay theme that this movie is not being shown, both lead actors are superb and i want to see this movie!!!
padre50 12-22-2005, 12:44 AM I am looking forward to seeing this movie from what I have read it sounds not only interesting but well done.
RobsGirl 12-22-2005, 01:55 PM Blech. . .if I wanna see gay cowboys I'll just go up to the gay bar in Fargo. . .I can get in there for nothing! :D
kittylane 12-23-2005, 10:38 PM its not about seeing gay cowboys.... that is not the thrill, it is about the sadness that comes with not being able to be with the one you love because of societies standards, the fact that they fell in love in the first place when they had not a clue in the world to do so makes this intriquing for me, i NEVER set out to fall in love with Adam, i have had lash back from society or stares, its just so wrong to do so!!! the movies theme actually reminds me of a ow/ym theme, taboo... so i want to see, i wish though however they found a way to live their life in love and not be destroyed by it. as i said before, very romeo and julietta.
I would actually LOVE to see this film-have heard rave reviews of it, but I don't even have the OPTION of seeing it unless I go to another town. Being a smallish southern Bible Belt town in SC, movie theaters here have boycotted this film due to it's subject matter and refuse to bring it here!
Personally, I think they should just show it and let the CUSTOMERS decide if they want to see it or not!
Desert Spring 01-04-2006, 04:34 AM It's a very good movie. It's about nothing but finding a person that is right for you, but being afraid because it is unconventional. Everybody on this board should
get that, eh?
padre50 01-04-2006, 04:54 AM I liked the film. It was well done and as a man, guy, male I saw the pains of human emotion superseed anything else that could derived as controversial. Sex between 2 men does not bother me anyway. So I give it high marks
jellybean400 01-04-2006, 04:23 PM its not about seeing gay cowboys.... that is not the thrill, it is about the sadness that comes with not being able to be with the one you love because of societies standards, the fact that they fell in love in the first place when they had not a clue in the world to do so makes this intriquing for me, i NEVER set out to fall in love with Adam, i have had lash back from society or stares, its just so wrong to do so!!! the movies theme actually reminds me of a ow/ym theme, taboo... so i want to see, i wish though however they found a way to live their life in love and not be destroyed by it. as i said before, very romeo and julietta.
Great post. More people need to think of it as a love story, which it is.
freespirit 01-04-2006, 05:27 PM Just wanted to add my .02 $AUS worth...
firstly....no matter how good he gets.....HEATH LEDGER IS OURS....we had him first he is too cute....you should have seen him when he was younger hubba hubba....
secondly how brave are these two straight mainstream actors to take on controversial roles like these....I love it when art is used as a vehicle for challenging stereotypes and social mores....
and thirdly....great movie, and as kitty, Padre and others have pointed out....it is only in a small way about the homosexuality of the male lead characters and so much more about how society constrains and judges love, in whatever form it takes. Yes there are "sex" scenes, but the beautiful and moving subtext of this story is that great love can be found in the least likely of places, and the terrible emotional anguish that manifests when it has to be denied because of the prevailing culture of the time can cause lifelong trauma and damage. But true love will endure all obstacles. As DS says all of us on here can relate to that.
Star how absoultely shocking that in 2006 you are still being forced to endure censorship of this magnitude.....I thought America was a progressive country (don't flame me but I am shocked).....it is in all the cinemas here.....doesn't anyone challenge the powers that be on this stuff....you're all adults in a democratic society after all...surely there are gay people in your town....
kittylane 01-07-2006, 07:00 PM wow.... i saw the movie and did not have the same opinion that jack was a predator. Ennis clearly loved his children, but i dissagree 100% that it was not his nature to be homosexual and the guilt was driving him mad. Ennis, was clear in his role in life as a ranch hand, he never aspired for anything else, there is a scene when he is with his wife where he turns her over as when he was with Jack.... you can see it in the wifes actions she knows her husband has not committed 100%, i know these actions and feeling well, as my exhusband while not gay had many extramarital relationships with hookers, strippers and such.
guilt does not make ennis take the shirt that jack has stolen from him earlier and rub his face in it.... i do that with my husbands shirts, i go in the closet and rub the sleeves on my face and hold them close to me. (he is in the army deployed) that is an act of love, not guilt.
bringing even the notion that one or the other forced the other into homosexuality is not the point. they fell in love. both were in love till the ends of their days.
guilt does not make two men giddy with excitment that they are going to be alone with eachother, i understand the feeling, adam and i are happy on stark army bases... means nothing, we make a home where ever we are, yet in the day to day, i live in a very nice house in fort lauderdale and drive a nice car, i relate so much to the story because sometimes you find that one person that makes you feel so at HOME and so COMPLETE that you need nothing else, this is what i saw that they had, but ennis was terrified of ending up like jack did in the end....
remember the scene where ennis as a boy was taken by his father to the body of a man suspected to be a homosexual dead with his penis cut off, that would leave an imprint on me..
padre50 01-08-2006, 02:22 AM Im sure many can identify with that one love that had a huge cost attached to it. This love could bring, guilt, pain, shame as well as joy, oneness and soul touching feelings. I think that to suffer pure heartache over the deep love you have for another human being whether it be a man or woman young or old is worth the journey. To be involved with such a love as Ennis was cannot be easliy disected. Has anyone here felt pure heartache from the breakup of arelationship with another person?
thanks for the thumbs up folks.....I'm gonna see it this wknd.
Patricia 01-11-2006, 03:06 AM Heath Ledger's dang hot though. Mmmm.
That is an understatement.
you should have seen him when he was younger hubba hubba....
You mean like in "Roar"? I did! That was my favorite program for the short time it was on.
He was in a relationship with an older woman, Naomi Watts, for several years. She is very beautiful and an excellent actress and, obviously, has good taste in men.
The down-under boy himself:

PinkCat 01-13-2006, 06:43 PM I have to agree with that sentiment!
Two very drool-worthy dudes... mmmmm, hot!!
My favorite "gay" movie is Stonewall. I thought that was good movie. I was pretty much bawling when that guy shot himself in bed. The scene where that guys boyfriend (or girlfriend, or whatever) shows up at the draft board, that was pretty good too. If you've never seen Stonewall, I totally reccomend it.
lencarol 01-14-2006, 10:03 AM Have not seen any good decent movies of late. I would like to see March of the Penguins, but then I am such a fuddy duddy....have NO interest in a movie like Brokeback (hooker flick?), no matter how much "love" is in it. The previews are portraying it as a sweet love story, showing a family, typical of Hollywood to lead the sleeping public astray. And of course, TrueHeart, there is the "jam it down your throat" (be it ever so subtly) thrust here (no pun intended). Disgusting. Recall, I am NOT PC, keeps me in trouble in a troubled age of no values....ooops there is fuddy duddy me on my soapbox again... :o My sister keeps me apprised(sp?) of the latest in film. Poor thing, keeps going, keeps getting disappointed by flick after flick, but she is ever hopeful, doesn't give up as I have--being older and wiser of course, ha! But did raise her well...so will wait and see what she says about the "award winning" Break-yer-back.
And a man (male), who poses seductively on a big-name mag cover--big turnoff. Do you think he has ever really "worked" a day in his life?

(sigh) I guess the love story of a rugged Utah rancher and his two wives wouldn't cut it with you, either? :D
lencarol 01-14-2006, 11:30 AM Don't know about "cutting it", but don't care, as long as it doesn't affect me. I am saying I would not go and waste 2 hours and waste $10 to "watch" it. Got too much energy to sit that long for junk.
Michele 01-14-2006, 12:00 PM This isnt related to the Movie...which Id love to see...
But where did Viva go? I loved her posts!
Oooh....oooh....Viva is ME! I got googled...long story. GD google!
****SHHHHHHH*****
LOL!
Hey lencarol....March of the Penguins is excellent. There are some bambi moments though...In the theatre, I was sitting in front of a dad, with two sets of twins...older girls and younger boys. One boy would be like...what wrong with the baby daddy. And his dad would say something like.."He's just sleeping." then the older girls would chime in with, "He's not sleeping he's DEAD!"
It was in a bizarre way...pretty funny. I told my man...wow, I can't wait to have kids.

Im glad your here Otto....I so totally enjoy your posts!! Even if I dont agree, like Harrison, and Aminia and few others, you make me laugh and open my mind to different ideas.....
Please please dont leave.... ;)
HA HA! Awesome. I'm just gonna throw out there, I'm SO glad I'm getting love in the gay cowboy thread!!
Seriously...I couldn't handle the love the over in chit chat. Like those hippie music festivals I used to go to when I was in high school and college...
I'm also going to move my gourami into the tank with the ottos today. I feel like there's a disturbance in the force. Maybe putting my fish in the same tank will settle it.
jesique 01-14-2006, 09:27 PM Harrison...
I'd totally love to see a movie about a Utah Rancher and his two wifes....that would totally interest me. (yes...I'm strange)
As for Brokeback Mountain....I'm sick of this getting cramed down our throats.
Nadine.
I almost got to the theatre to see it yesterday....and then I realized there's playoff football on...
Yo SkiBunny. I don't know your man...but he looks like a real nice guy! But being the rabid Patriots fan that I am...and (thinking) that's he's a Denver Broncos fan....tell him that I said....GRRRRRRRRR....but in the nicest of ways! LOL
But back to the movie...I almost got the tickets, but copped out.
This is by far one of the best movies I've seen in a long, long time. The cinematography was outstanding. The acting was superb. The costumes and sets were well thought out, right down to the most minute detail.
But THE STORY and it's denouement is what really touched me. It's a topic that is still relevant today, because love is always interesting. Thankfully it's certainly a better time in the world to be gay.
And I believe it's completely appropo to this board, because it got me thinking about my own relationship with YM, and how similar it is the relationship of the two cowboys. We see each other several times a year, but our relationship is not "out" in many ways because it is unacceptable to certain parties in both of our lives (for different reasons.)
All I can say is: this movie really hit home, and has given me a lot of food for thought.

Well, thanks for your vote of confidence, Jesique. I'll talk to my investors about raising the funds..... :D
Meanwhile, no "Brokeback Mountain" for me yet. I'll check it out eventually though.
Anjiana 01-16-2006, 10:22 PM I finally saw the movie today...

Phil and I saw the movie earlier this week. We both liked it a great deal.
What I found tremendously appealing about the movie was the fact that there were really no "bad guys" as lead characters. It was just about each person's humanity and how it all played out in the game we call life.
If you have a connection with your SO like the leads of the this movie do, you will understand the depth of feeling they have for each other. We all know that loving, passionate connections with other humans are very hard to find and sustain, regardless of the sexuality of the folks involved.
It is a tremendous film for anyone who has an appreciation for the human condition.
Desert Spring 01-24-2006, 11:39 PM And the front runner-up for the Best Picture Oscar :>

Great post...and i saw it this weekend, and i agree. Absolutely beautiful in every way. Visually stunning, and emotionally stunning. I have rarely been so affected by a movie...inthat my stomach was a little upset at the end of it. (and not for any 'gay' reason) It was so powerful that it took ALOT out of me.
I could relate so much, because of what i'm going thru in a relationship right now...that will probably never be. The acting was incredible, and so was the story. I've never seen any film about two men in love, and i didnt know how it would affect me. Really, all i felt was the love story.
A friend who saw it when it first came out, would only tell me "its a love story." I didnt know any of the details, accept for the fact that it was between two men.
Edited the next day...to add: I've been thinking about it so much, i think i need to go see it again! Heres the news regarding the Oscars:

Science Goddess 02-04-2006, 03:09 PM I saw this movie last night.
I always find it difficult to get past all of the hype and publicity surrounding some movies. I often either never see them, take forever to finally see it or feel 'let down' when I do finally see it.
I thought this movie was excellent.
Kittylane, you commented earlier that this movie has 'limited release'. Maybe that was early-on but it's in mainstream theaters everywhere here. *chuckle* California, full of fruits and nuts.
As far as:
two cute guys sharing som love?? come on girls..course we like it.. :D
Uh...nope. Definitely not. This does absolutely nothing for me. I don't want to watch that any more than I want to watch two girls 'sharing some love'.
However, individually, these boys are hot. Like Ski Bunny, I've never been a huge Heath Ledger fan. He is definitely becoming more attractive as he grows up but...then there's Jake-baby. while I've always thought that Jake Gyllenhaal was a cutie, this it actually the first film that I've ever seen him in. This guy is so smokin' hot, he makes me freakin' drool. (And the cowboy get-up only serves to make the drooling worse.)

Edit: Netflix should be delivering Donny Darko in the next couple of days.

What a piece of blue eyed man he is
Should be illegal to look this good and go out on streets!

drools all over the keyboard~
Science Goddess 02-04-2006, 05:24 PM The thing is, that he is even better looking on film than in pictures for some reason. I guess because you can see him as a walking, talking hunk of a dude on film! And his energy, his charisma and his sexiness all just ooze on film.
I wish I'd asked my hairdresser if I could buy the magazine she had in her shop a couple of months ago. There were several pictures of him in it. **drool**

kittylane 02-19-2006, 06:36 PM there is "SOMETHING" about jake. i have not been interested in a male actor since ever but there is something sexy and yet totally vulnerable about him. i think he is absolutely gorgeous.
the movie was daring, it was also about taking risks and coming out of the closet not only as a gay man but getting past personal fear. i am full of my personal demons at times.... i am still shocked i took the chance i did with my husband, so unlike me....
i related to the characters, it was not all mush and gush like most movies, it really captured the sentiment of falling DEEPLY in love. i got it, i felt their love because i love adam this way. yet, i was so wounded at first by people's comments or stares because we have an age gap.
its a good movie with alot of depth.
jellybean400 02-20-2006, 12:33 AM Those pics posted of Jake are incredible!! I've got a bad "thing" for him now, since that movie. Hes breathtakingly gorgeous!!! :D
Bella 04-22-2006, 09:37 PM Alright, I finally saw it tonight, and of course, bawled like a baby.
I've listened to the end a jillion times now, and still can't catch what he's whispering. Someone PM me with it too please!!
Patricia 04-23-2006, 09:04 PM My son and I watched it last night.
It was an excellent movie in some ways--direction, cinematography, acting. Heath was superb, except that he mumbled too much. Will someone please PM me the last line? We rewound the DVD several times, but couldn't make it out. Anyway, Heath went beyond the script and made his character deeper and more complex. Amazing!
For those of you drooling over Jake--he is all yours! My Heath passion remains intact. :D
We thought that the story lacked continuity. I didn't take to the characters. I thought they were both jerks because of the callous way they treated their women. Obviously, they were bisexual, not homosexual, and that was one of the reasons that they they had difficulty committing to an exclusive relationship. I don't want to say more because I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it. Have I said too much already? If someone thinks so, please PM me and I will edit this last paragraph or delete my post.
Bella 04-23-2006, 10:11 PM It wasn't so much that they were bi, they lived in different time, when men were expected to get married and have babies. It was the 60s, men were men. I know many gay men who married and had kids, and didn't acknowledge that part of themselves until later in life. And Ennis father making sure he took his children to see the body of a murdered gay man, to make sure his sons didn't turn out that way, would have made Ennis a lot more likely to try to bury that part of himself.
In his mind, this thing he felt would get them both killed, and he may have been right, if his theory is correct, that Jack was murdered. You never really know for sure, even in the book.
Ennis reality is all we know.
kindanice 04-24-2006, 05:31 AM so...what was the last line?

Just, "Jack, I swear....."
And I guess you're not supposed to know for sure what it means.....
Bella 04-28-2006, 06:58 AM Come watch it with me!!
David watched the last half, I can't get him to watch the first half with me, and I want someone to sit and cry with me.
I keep trying to talk my daughter into coming over and watching it with me, but she'd have to bring her kids, and that's not a movie to watch with kids crying every 10 minutes. Besides, her baby's due in a couple of weeks, and she cries over EVERYTHING, so I can't imagine how she'd react to this.
Raven Magdalene 04-28-2006, 10:43 AM Sure, and sans the mascara OR you can bring it here & I'll prepare you some Tea! :D
Come watch it with me!!
