Other peoples perceptions

I just thought I'd mention this, as it happened today.

I'm temping at the moment, and I've been working at this place for a couple of weeks. I eat my lunch with the people in the post room because I worked in the same place for 6 weeks this summer and a couple of people who I worked with then are still there, but there's also a couple of young girls (both just turned 18 in the last couple of weeks) and they've been asking lots of questions, just because they are nosey! They started asking questions about my gf and stuff, and asked how old she is, which I was a bit cagey about... but they got it out of me :p and the funny thing is... they weren't in the slightest bit bothered about it at all. The other two people in there are older, one old guy near retirement age and another woman who I would say is in her (maybe late, I don't really know) 50's, and neither of them were fussed either. In fact, the womans husband is 8 years younger than her!

Well, this has got me thinking that maybe people don't really care about the age gap. I mean, I have thought a bit like that before, but I'm still a bit funny about just throwing it out at everyone I meet.

Thought people might be interested to know.

Hi Rob! Hmmm....Lucky you! Nice crew of people you work with. I think the bottom line is ....."Those who matter don't judge...and those who judge don't matter." Hugs, Dee :p

Hiya Rob! Your post reminded me of something I once read of Bella's about how the more matter of fact you are... the more matter of fact everyone else is too. I have certainly found that to be true. Nobody seems to care at all around us and I haven't felt particularly self-conscious in long while.

My sister always had boyfriends at least 10 years younger than her and sometimes more. This was in the Middle East, and NOBODY minded AT ALL including my parents.

I've always been around couples who have a YM/OW age-gap and I notice the same thing here in France too. People absolutely don't make an issue out of it.

The only negative remark that I ever heard was from a supposedly open-minded friend of mine when I told her the age of the man I was interested in. She said "my God Aline, he could have been your son". Well yes, he could have been my son but first of all HE IS NOT. Plus my son is only 9 and when I was 18 I had absolutely no intentions of having kids. So for me a son means a 9 year-old, simple, dimple.

Good for you Rob !!!!

edit: by the way my best friend (44) has been living for 2 years with a man who is now 20. Her daughter is 21, now she's been hearing some negative remarks but her daughter doesn't mind and most important of all THEY ARE SOOOO HAPPY TOGETHER.
