Flyer 01-05-2006, 01:32 AM So, how do you all feel about vaccinating your pets? All the controversy that applies to the vaccinations of children also applies to pet vaccinations. Personally, I feel the risks are too high and the potential for killing your dog or making him very ill are just too high. So, no more vaccinations for Coopie. I talked to his vet about this and he agreed that there really wasn't a good reason to vaccinate every year especially if your animal is not exposed to other animals.
lencarol 01-05-2006, 06:52 AM I agree too not to vaccinate if they are strictly indoor only pets. I just got my new kitty several months ago, and she was only indoors. Well I have a little patio and let her go out, she of course, gets into mischief occasionally, so have thought to take her down the street to get her feline leukemia vaccines. She has the rest of them up to date. Better to be safe than sorry. I had a cat die from that and is not pleasant.
fos4snt 01-05-2006, 08:33 AM All my cats, all my life up until recently were indoor only. I had them vaccinated ONE time in their early years and never again. My two cats from 17 through my mid-30s both lived LONG healthy lives. Po was 18 when she died.
My dogs have been mostly outdoor dogs in a FENCED backyard, but are inside right now. They do get rabies vaccinations ~ but not the rest, because its required. Our indoor/outdoor cat gets ALL vaccinations, because he is all over the place. The indoor ones only get rabies and distemper in their early kittenhood. After that, forgettabout it.
I also refuse to fight ear mites in the way my vet wants me to... its an endless, fruitless battle. They get the treatment on the back of their neck twice a year (five animals, I can't afford it 4 times a year each) and I cannot use the steroid topical the vet wants me to put in their ears, as it gives ME hives. Which means, in essence, we've never cleared up a single ear mite infection EVER, and I'm disinclined to continue to bother at all... unless it gets REALLY bad, which it never has.
My children only get THIMEROSAL free vaccinations (my son has high functioning autism as a DIRECT result of mercury poisoning in the mid-90s from vaccinations, thank you... ) and never more than one at a time. But, I do believe in vaccinating them against certain things... just NOT the flu (contains Thimerosal!!!!) vaccination under ANY circumstances.

Wow...Fos. I've been reading a bit about the Thimerosal vacs. That's some bad stuff. Especially the how the autism rates have JUMPED significantly! John John K. Jr. is on TV and radio a lot, calling for a congressional investigation. There's some evidence that maybe they the vacs weren't tested to FDA standards properly or something? They introduced them when I was too old, but its still scary!
Anyway, I think if you're dog will have any contact with animals whatsoever, especially other dogs on walks or at dog runs and stuff....I would vaccinate for Distemper (which is still around everywhere), Parvo (esp. as a puppy), Bordotella (esp. if you go away for vacation and leave them at a kennel)...and Corona, Lepto and Adenovirus only if they are present in your area. In most places they aren't. I had my dog vaccinated with the first three, and I believe the vet did Corona and Lepto, as a puppy, but not in the yearly booster. I'd have to check, because its rare, but its still seen around here.
I also gave her the Lyme Disease vacc. No one really knows if it works, and it doesn't make her sick, and she is a TICK MAGNET! So I said why not?
And rabies is manditory EVERYWHERE and very important. If your dog is diagnosed, you'll be in the ER getting painful shots in your knuckles!
fos4snt 01-05-2006, 10:26 AM Well, since my dogs have... literally... no contact with other dogs, I'm not worried. They met up with Nessa's dogs once, but that's it. So, I'm gonna stick with the plan I have and only doing rabies, as it is mandatory, and distemper when they are puppies.
I will NEVER board my dogs in a kennel. Over my dead body. I'd skip whatever trip I was planning if I couldn't find some kid, neighbor, friend or professional dog watcher to come feed/let the dogs out twice a day. Missy, our red border collie, is WAY too emotionally sensitive to handle going BACK into any cage/kennel. I couldn't do that to her. They spent 5 months of their life at a shelter.

BellaLove 01-05-2006, 05:22 PM NOPE! Both my cats are around 1 year old, they got all their first shots and stuff.....but thats it! I am not injecting drugs into my babies anymore! They are indoor only and there is just no reason to be giving them vaccinations.
When I have children someday I probably won't give them vaccinations either.....
I haven't had any vaccinations since I was 4 or 5, and I am perfectly healthy! If anything, it's my friends who go regurally to get their shots that end up getting sick ALL THE TIME!!

My granddaughter is 4 years old and has never had a vaccination and never will. She is the healthiest one at her daycare center. Everyone else gets sick, she doesn't. My daughter's family eats only organic vegetarian, no milk, but eggs are okay, rarely are their cane sugar treats, anyway she's pretty healthy even without vaccinations.
Fos4snt, I am so sorry to hear that your son is one of Thimerosal's victims. That's pretty much why I don't trust the Federal Drug Administration to protect us, 'cause they don't. I have researched and read so much of how the drug companies influence the FDA. My late step-father got Parkinson's from some drug he was given. I don't think we even know the tip of the iceberg of how drugs that are dispensed effect our bodies, weakening and destroying our immune system therefore opening us up to all kinds of health problems. Anyway, that's my two cents.
fos4snt 01-05-2006, 07:38 PM Well, if y'all worry about thimerosal, worry about those nasty amalgam fillings, too. Cuz, there is a University of Calgary study which shows how the mercury in amalgam fillings (dental) can contribute heavily to diseases like Alzheimers. If you have 'em, I'd get them replaced with a resin based filling. The TINIEST bit of mercury can destory the neurofibroids in the brain. Check out www.safeminds.org. And beware of fish these days, too. Especially tuna.
My son has gotten better with age... my BIL hasn't been so lucky. Back in 1995, he won a fulbright scholarship and went to Ghana to study african tribal percussion (he's a drummer) and had to get 11 vaccinations to go. Well, they gave him 11... all a the same time. WAY more than a toxic dose of mercury and he's had grand mal seizures ever since.
There was an article last week in the Washington Post about how they think this horrible stomach bug is getting SO bad because of people using drugs like Prilosec and other medications to keep you from getting heart burn... well, that bug put my aunt in the hospital for FIVE days over Christmas and the rest of us who got it just got mildly sick and over it in a couple days. There is something to that...
... Litical and I refuse things like flu shots, because we honestly think they are contributing to the MUTATION of the disease and making it FAR worse than it would become if left on its own to run its own course. SOME drugs are vital, important and very, very good... so, I haven't completely written off ALL drugs. Tums is great. Asprin is still wonderful, as is Tylenol for pain (one is all I ever need!).
I went into a stage very similar to where I see BellaLove being in terms of the whole natural, vegan, homeopathic lifestyle around the same age (20-23), but slowly found a more moderate stance... there is a good middle ground, where not everything needs to be condemned as unnatural and horrible, but with the right balance and research, you can find a way to still be tolerable to people who just don't CARE about their bodies or longevity, but still maintain a certain personal balance... does that make sense?
There are some vaccinations I still think are very important, and good... but the more we mess around, especially with VIRUS's, the more they will mutate and become REAL killers. Our immunity needs a chance to BUILD and if we deny it that, we WILL end up killing ourselves.

Isn't it the truth!!??!! I'll add two cents to your two cents and we can have four cents together!!
My father has a bad valve in his heart...and a host of other problems....his doctor wants him on 5....5.....yes 5!! different drugs!! I nearly flipped my lid when he told me that!! I insisted that he go to see a doctor in Oriental Medicine or Naturopathic Medicine to know his options. Many people don't know their are options to taking drugs/vaccinations/ and whatever else they call it. Unfortunatley my father is so brainwashed that it is impossible to get him to realize drugs aren't the only answer......I did manage to get him to take Cod Liver Oil on a daily basis, but unless he goes to see a professional in holistic medicine...he won't know all that he can do. :-(
Sorry to ramble, but it seems like we all have someone in our lives that we want to help......
My co-worker that is 5 months prego just got a flu shot, (her doctor INSISTED on it) and now she is at home throwing up and has a 101 fever......hmmmmm......she was fine prior to the shot. Now she's going BACK to the doctor to get something for being sick. Give me a break....it's a vicious cycle, does anyone else see it but me???

fos4snt 01-05-2006, 07:46 PM Nope... I see it, too, hon. I've just become much more numb to it. There isn't anything you can do about other peoples choices. My aunt has been a prescription drug takin' fool for years and it makes her MORE sick and have MORE problems. I have seen it first hand numerous times.
My OM boyfriend back in college (20/42) went on Prozac and within 2 months had a distended belly, lost ALL color in his skin and was JUST as miserable and FREAKY weird. I begged and begged and begged him to quit, and eventually told him I couldn't take it anymore and broke off our relationship. Ran into him 4 months later, he had quit and was back to normal and all he could say was... "THANK YOU... for waking me up!"
So, yep... others definitely see it. ;) I admire your youth, Bella... cuz the passion behind your convictions is admirable...

Sofie dog loves the kennel. I always bring her bed...a bean bag which she never sleeps on at home anymore. They van them to the dog run once a day and let them run in an indoor yard too. Its like a vacation for her, and she's a charming little mutt so she's always up in everyone's face and lap over there. For $40 bucks a day it better be nice....sadly, that's like, the cheapest place in NYC.
Flyer 01-05-2006, 11:09 PM I see it, too! The only time I got the flu in the past 15 years was when I got a flu shot. I thought I was going to die. My doctor even told me to never get a flu shot again! I have formed my own medical team to take care of me, made up of my allopathic doctor for emergency/life saving procedures (he knows that I am very conservative about taking meds), my naturopath, and my chiropractor. They all know about each other and they are willing to work with each other should I get very ill. My mother suffers from constant vertigo since her stroke almost two years ago. She has gone to many allopathic doctors, all who say that they can't do anything for it, and that it must be due to old age. Poppyc*ock! Finally, she consented to my taking her to my naturopath. We'll see how that goes. I hope none of you are using Equal, you know, Aspartame. It's the most controversial drug ever approved by the FDA. It got approved by just one vote, and the head of the FDA who really pushed for its approval, quit six months later after it got approved and went to work for the makers of Equal.
Fos, I just want to express my outrage that your children have been hurt so much by the insensitive and greed-driven drug companies that know full well of the dangers that their drugs pose to people. And, I'm assuming that they are pretty much protected against lawsuits?
