What do you remember?

A couple ladies at work were talking today about the things they remember growing up and as teenagers...I know we are all different generations and ages here, but what sort of things do y'all remember?
For example..Am I the only person on earth who remembers the Speed Buggy cartoon? Or Grape Ape? Does anyone remember the Smurfs and Smurfberry crunch cereal? Does anyone besides me remember when it took two hours and a whole can of hairspray to get "big hair" done just right for school? I remember getting our first VCR, and the thing was so big it needed its own stand! lol
Come on you guys, give me some reminders here of other great memories to remember.....

My favorite was Choco Crunch cereal by Capt Crunch. I had that one and it was awesome. I also remember Mr. T cereal too! I remember watching shows like Manimal..a guy that can change into wild animals to fight crime. I also love this short tv series where this guy who is a cop that has this device that can create a car out of a single push of a button from his car alarm. It's like Wonder Woman's invisible jet. I also love watching the 60's sci fi program called the "Time Tunnel". I remember Speed Buggy cartoons cuz I watch them. I also watched the original speed buggy with real people. I remember having T&C stickers(town and country). I also had the 3rd edition of the garbage pail kids trading cards. I had the first issue of garbage pail kids but someone stole it.

I remember watching the Tom & Jerry cartoon & thinking that what they were doing was so bad (now look at the cartoons!). I watched the Cosby show religiously. I had a lunch pail that had Batman & Robin on it...from the original show! I remember my mom making me wear bell bottom plaid pants! As a teenager I remember the black rubber bracelets...and you'd wear tons of them. Cut-off sweatshirts (Flashdance). Leggings & leg warmers. funny haircuts (my winner was one that was short on one side & long on the other!). The Preppy Handbook (hated it!). Purses where you could detach covers and put on new ones. I remember watching Star Wars...the first one that came out...on the big screen!

Ohmigod...leg warmers. Euuuwwww...lol! Isn't it funny how things change? I look at my kids now with their flare-leg pants, big clunky shoes and shirts with the little sayings on them....and I think, aha, I now know what my parents were thinking 20 years ago...lol.
I remember seeing Star Wars when it first came out. I think my brother had every single Star Wars toy ever made.
I remember watching Captain Kangaroo on television before elementary school in the mornings, and feeling sorry for that poor moose who always had all the ping-pong balls drop on his head. Anyone else watch that?
We were the first people in our neighborhood to get cable, and I remember watching the very first video on MTV that was ever shown, and thinking to myself "I don't think this will ever catch on". LOL
I also thought Jon Bon Jovi was the hottest man ever to be placed on the earth... *smiles*

You are reading a post by the queen of leg warmers. My adolescent self must've had about 50 pairs. OK - I had an excuse - I was taking daily dancing classes - but still .....

And yes, when no one is looking I'm still capable of throwing a pair on over my jeans at home.

Boyfriend gets a slightly worried look on his face :D

I loved Captain Kangaroo. Remember the show that had the two women...and the daisies who giggled? Or am I mixing it up with something else? Can't remember!

I loved Duran Duran...absolutely gaga! John was my main man!

This was a great topic post! :)

I am still loving the music from the 80's and early 90's...anything from Prince, Talking Heads, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys, The Cars, Def Leppard...okay, I'll stop now before I start freaking out everyone :)

I actually found this great board game online the other day in which you hear lyrics from the 70's and 80's and try to answer trivia questions amongst friends. It's called "For The Record."

As a kid, I also loved PogoBall, Micro Machines, anything Double Dare, and of course, my stylish Jeans Jacket. :)

What a cutie he was! I had the biggest crush on Bobby Sherman. My daughter laughed at me so hard when she saw "Here Come The Brides" (remember that little stint with him and Bridgett what's her name?) She said you could pitch a tent on his Adam's Apple!!!LOL :p You know he works with a Special Paramedics Force here in Los Angeles. I went to see him a few years back where he performed at the Orange County Fair along with Davy Jones, Peter Townsend, and a host of other entertainers of that era. I LOVED it. :) He still performs in those tight black leather pants, and his *** is still tight as a drum:D

You want to hear something funny? Someone threw a pair of undies at the stage when he was performing just like they did back in the day!

My bedroom walls were wallpapered with Davy Jones, Bobby Sherman, David Cassidy, and that guy from "Alias Smith and Jones" (the dark haired one, can't even remember is name) posters. I entered every "win a date with..." I could.

What the hell is in this drink? I meant to say Peter Noone, not Peter Townsend!

Peter Noone is the lead singer of Herman's Hermits and Townsend is well Who I guess.

Sorry to the fans of both for mixing them up.

Woo Hooo three cheers for Tiger Beat!

Joanalee, you want to know about hair? I am 5'3" if I stand on my tippies, but when my sister got through teasing my hair and doing the beehive on my head, I shot up to 5'10" and I had so much blue eyeshadow on that I looked neon:D

I do miss leg warmers, being able to wear a skirt in the middle of winter without your knees getting frostbite. Although I saw an "Ecko" ad in Cosmo recently and the woman in it had on a pair of them. Perhaps they will become the latest hip-hop fashizzle and I can have warm knees in winter again.

I remember polka dots, new wave music (hated it), really bright colors (neon fuschia and turquoise), cooking your hair with aqua net and a curling iron to get that vertical bang look.

Knight Rider, Chips, Battlestar Galactica, Voltron and Star Blazers. Heavy Metal.

Balloon pants, pinstripe baggy jeans, Gloria Vanderbilt, prarie skirts, and dressing like Madonna. Black patent Connie pumps. Big shirts, stirrup pants, tshirts tied up on one hip.

Video game arcades for adults, with a liquor license. The one near where i went to college was called "Electronics 101". Centipede, Galaga, and the ever popular and seemingly eternal: Pac-Man (they now have a version for the PS2). One thing we have, thanks to the fact that my fiance's a Pac-maniac and a computer genius-a vintage stand-up arcade machine that's been gutted, and a PC installed inside and now plays over 400 classic 80s video games.

I had to check your age on your profile because all the stuff you mentioned hit me in the head. And sure enough, we're right about the same.

Except I can never remember anything; I was fairly well stoned from 14 to 24, and then drunk from 24 to 34. So it takes alot to get me remembering.

I remember the Beatles in Portland in like 1965, Dave Clark Five, Herman's Hermits, then those horrible Stones came along. What gross looking, disrespectful looking guys there were. That lasted about one year and since then they are my favorites along with a hundred others.

Empire waists, long hair, straight long bangs, wool plaid shorts, knee high socks and penny loafters. Leather jackets.

My first boyfriend, my first car accident at 16 soon after my license. Too much to remember.

In high school, a bag of pot sold for $25 and it was so big, you couldn't fold over the top of the baggie. It was $35 for the REALLY good stuff! Blotter acid was the hit at camp-outs. Jack Daniels was the drink of choice, although we'd settle for anything our minor hands could get a hold of, including Godawful cheap beer (ever hear of Falls Staff or Iron City?)

Anyone remember "peasant dresses"? Oh yeah, and those mirror sunglasses that were kind of shaped like a fly's eye? What about EARTH SHOES??? How about how we used to braid our hair in a bunch of little braids when it was wet, and unbraid it the next morning and wear it to school?

I remember watching E.T. at a DRIVE-IN. I was in my 1977 Buick Lasabre, which could comfortably seat about 50 people, and cost a thousand dollars to go five miles. But that was early 80's...getting back to the 70's...

I remember when UHF t.v. had those syndicated shows on every day...Petticoat Junction, Andy Griffith, Leave it to Beaver, LASSIE!!! What show was Petticoat Junction a spin-off from...GREEN ACRES? Once I had mononucliosis, and had to stay home from school for two months. I watched those shows all day. I can still remember some of the episodes.

I thought Captain Kangaroo was local (Cincinnati). Was he National? I remember him well, my favorite kiddie show. Mr. Green Jeans was on there. Captain Kangaroo had a really funky haircut, like "Moe" on the three stooges, only the Captains curled under a little bit, but he had those weird, straight bangs. Mr. Rogers is from Cincinnati. That guy was WEEIIIRRRD! I watched him when I did acid in high school with some friends. He freaked us out!

OMG! Remember PONCHOS???

Well I remember cartoons like Transformers, Voltron, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. (The origional ones.) Tyger 74. I could have sworn that the one show that the guy changes the car buy pressing the button is a cartoon called Inspector Gadget.
Oh and shows like Knight Rider, Manimal, Incredible Hulk. I got scared at the opening credits. Now that's good television. Now we got crap like freinds, frazier, and other drekish crap.

I liked MTV when they play viedios. Nowadays MTV plays viedios late at night. Ah to be old and cranky.

Polly, I got sick when I was little and had to spend six months home from school...I watched every old TV show there was!
When we first moved out into this house we live in now before we renovated...one day I was angry because everything was kind of "rigged" to work..and I told my kids it was like living in the show "Green Acres". They stared at me like I was a martian! LOL
I spent six months watching Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, The Beverly Hillbillies...
Oh my god, and Leave it to Beaver! GAG. If that was my kid, I swear, I would have gone insane.
Mrs. R...I too did the dress up like Madonna thing. In junior high I remember everyone had to wear Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, and Izod shirts with the little alligators on them?
With the hair, I used to take a an hour to do it before school, and carried an entire arsenal of hair spray, brushes and a curling iron in my purse for touch-ups. LOL
My brother and I saved up our Christmas money and bought an Atari, I think we paid around 200.00 for it!!! Holy cow...and we thought Frogger was the coolest thing ever.
What an improvement from the old TV Tennis game we had...with the two little lines and you batted the "ball" back and forth?
My god, it seems like forever ago... *smiles*

I love this thread.

we were the first family on the block with a color tv and we had a VCR too. I t weighed 50 pounds had piano keys for controls and the remote was not even wireless all you could do with the remote was PAUSE the tape. I think it cost 500 dollars.

Ah the first Microwave was HUGE about 300 watts took forever to cook stuff (RELATIVE TO TODAYS) and cost a fortune.

I remember Green Acres, Petticoat Junction (it was Meredith Baxter (Birney) who played the mom on Family ties) she also starred in Bridget Loves Birney about a shiksa (gentile woman) who loves a Jewish guy.

Anyone remember the show Family? With Kristy McNichol. Leisure Suits?

Captain Kangaroo was favorite too, Mr. Green Jeans always could make you laugh. Any chance I got, also had to watch The Munsters and The Addams Family. Also, when in KC visiting got to watch a cable show called Johnny Socko, since we lived in western Kansas only had antennae until I was in high school. Some good memories reading this thread!

Remember Turkish Taffy??? Came in banana, strawberry or chocolate and is probably responsible for any dental problems we've had through the years?? You'd have to smack it on the table just to get edible size pieces.

The Soupy Sales Show? He used to put that raincoat on and talk about the weather .. then he'd give his lunch menu for the day and I made my mom make me whatever he was having.

Howdy Doody?? When they took him off the air, I cried forever and went into severe depression. My mother tried to tell me it was only a puppet .. that just added insult to injury ..

Mighty Mouse?? Here he comes to save the day .. (where is he now). I had a crush on him .. a cartoon mouse .. geez

And we can't forget the candy dots that came on strips of paper .. kind of looked like a bunch of thumb tacks .. and it's counterpart, the candy things on elastic that we wore around our necks .. gave new meaning to ring around the collar .......

(This could literally go on for as long as our memories hold out .. which may only be till the end of the day!)

Okay, shows I forgot, but have watched many times...Gomer Pyle, (I have a friend who dances like him but she's a girl), HAPPY DAYS!!! (AYYYYYY!!!), one of my very favorites...BEWITCHED!!! I wanted so much to be Elizabeth Montgomery, I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. Hey, what about The Sonny and Cher show? FLIPPER!!!("What is it Flipper? Dad's trapped under a patch of seaweed near the old boat wreck? You want us to follow you? Okay, Boy, lead the way!") Those two boys, never in school, always going out on a boat in the middle of the ocean with just shorts on, no life vest ever, and doing stupid crap that could get them killed, while their dad relied on a porpoise to babysit them so he could pick up on some female marine biologist or something! Flipper actually was the most intelligent one on the show! Remember The Courtship of Eddie's Father? Everyone wanted to know why he was always dating sl@ts when he could just go ahead and do it with the live-in maid, who was more like a mother to Eddie anyway...("What be the matter for you, Mista Eddie's father?")

One of these days, I'll finally get to the '80's!!!:D

LOL! This thread is making me laugh!
The shows I remember my parents watching in prime time when I was a kid were like Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, Good Times (dyno-O-MITE!) and Eight is Enough. Jeez, we sound so family oriented.
Nessa, we too had the 1000-pound microwave, and my Dad would make us sit clean across the room to heat anything up because he was afraid we would get radiation! LOL
We had a brand new Plymouth Duster my parents paid something like 3 or 4000 dollars for, and we would go the A&W Drive-In and get root beer floats on Sundays....and the waitresses still wore roller skates.
And FLEX! Your from Wichita...holy cow. I was born and raised in Wichita, and still only live about 40 miles from there.

My mom cried at every episode of "The Waltons". I guess they didn't have Prozac back then!

What's that sound? Boompa-chanka-boompa-chanka-boompa-chanka-boompa-chanka "What is love/baby don't hurt me/don't hurt me/no more..." why, it's EIGHTIES MUSIC!!! Flock of Seagulls, Wang Chung, Cindy Lauper, Bananarama, Madonna, Duran Duran, The Cure, A-ha, The Tom-Tom Club, Men at Work, The Go-Go's, The Bangles, Elvis Costello, The Stray Cats, Tina Turner (her comeback), Rod Stewart (his comeback), Robert Palmer, INXS, STEVIE NICKS (her comeback), Heart, and I can't even begin to list all the HAIR BANDS!!! All I can say is, has anyone ever heard of Steel Heart? There's a song called, "Never Let You Go" that will be played at Robin's and my wedding. Sounds a little possessive doesn't it?

80's shows: Family Ties, Growing Pains, Who's the Boss, Punky Brewster, What's Happening, Soap, Facts of Life... Here's a hint. Make the title of any '80's show funnier by replacing one word in the title with "penis". For example, instead of Growing Pains, it would be "Growing Penis" or "Penis Pains"! Or "Who's the Penis" instead of "Who's the Boss"! We used to do that all evening, my band and me, when watching t.v. Yeah, I guess ya had to be there! ;)

We've done the 70s in a different thread though, so it's the 80s turn.

Thanks for the poor boy one Cindy, that's more my speed.

Poor boy sweaters were a tiny rib knit sweater, worn with hip huggers with wide belts.

My first one was purple, with purple flower print hip hugger brushed courderoy, or however you spell it pants, with a wide white belt. And worn with white patent leather chunky heeled shoes that tied. How cool was that?

Boy! Do I feel old! I remember shows from the 50's. "Time for Beany," Howdy Doody," "Sheriff John," "Bozo, the Clown," "Engineer Bill," "The Ed Sullivan Show (The Beatles first appearance in America)," "Your Show of Shows," of course, "I Love Lucy," "77 Sunset Strip." Who from my generation could ever forget "American Bandstand" and Dick Clark? In terms of clothing, we had the chamise, tight skirts and tight sweaters, petticoats and poodle skirts, and spike highheels. In the 60's we had hiphuggers and bell bottoms, peasant dresses and granny glasses and, of course, flowers in our hair. In the 60's, we had VW vans painted in psychedlic colors, long long hair and of course that's when guys started growing their hair long, too. My favorite music groups were the Everly Brothers and the Platters. My favorite singers, Pat Boone, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Della Reese, Aretha Franklin. I loved anything from Motown. I'm sure your parents will remember all of these people. I can't believe how old I am; sure don't feel that old.

Holy crap!!!! This is what I get for waiting SOOO long to reply to this post - Polly you stole all my tv shows LOL!!!! Yeah, when I was probably 6 or 7 I remember watching Mr. Kangaroo with Mr. Green Jeans and Mr. Moose, the Patty Duke Show (she was cool) and the week JFK was killed and how long it seemed to last on tv. Oh, and our tv was this huge black and white thing and the screen had the rounded edges!! Then when I was probably 10 or 12 it was Green Acres with Arnold the Pig and Mr. Haney and that silly Zha Zha Gabore lol. OK, the only one I think no one has mentioned is LAUGH IN!!!! I loved that show - Goldie Hawn was SOOO skinny and Arte Johnson doing knock knock jokes! In Jr High we DID wear short short short skirts with our knee boots. I'm so short, I swear my skirts looked like they were only about 10 inches long lol. And ya better NOT bend over to pick anything up!!! Before that, I remember wearing these colored hose held up by the garter thingies lol!!!! Um, pantyhose hadnt been invented yet :o . I was a huge Monkees fan and had a couple of their albums, REAL albums that you played on a record player!! OHHHHH and dont forget 8 tracks lol!!!! I'd get SO mad when the tape would get stuck in the tape player and there would be miles and miles of it coming out everywhere!! In high school (mid 70's) I loved the big platform shoes cause they made me feel SO tall :p
And somewhere during those years the jeans went from hip huggers to high-waisted. My Dad would always give me a hard time when I left the house wearing hip huggers and a short shirt!! He'd say "dont tell anybody you're my daughter" lol. Oh, geez louise, I didnt mean to write a book, but I just got SO excited about all this stuff, please forgive me...

I have another, instead of a blow dryer my mom would wash my hair and put it on curlers, and then we had the dryer with the little plastic cap that fit over your head and connected to what looked like a mini-vaccum cleaner. When I was real young my mom did rag-rolling on my hair..looked like I had a perm. And then french braids, ouch, so tight you could hardly chew your lunch. I spent hours on that stupid sit-n-spin and some weird riding toy called an Inch Worm I just had to get for my birthday. Oh, and I had a pair of Romper Stompers off of Romper Room. She never said my name when she looked in the magic mirror either...dang it. That was all when I was real little though.
We had an 8-track tape player too, but my mom listened to like, Loggins and Messina and Simon and Garfunkel and the soundtrack to the musical "Hair."
My mom had a head shop where they sold bong pipes and black light posters and all kinds of hippie stuff....She took a macrame class and we had macrame and bead curtains all over the house. *smiles* Thinking back on it now, Mom might have been a little "cooler" than we gave her credit for...lol

Trish.. *smiles* My mom did own one of those stores. We lived in the city (wichita) which wasn't exactly a little house on the prairie. *smiles* I think about 300,000 people back then. I think I was in the third grade. However, no worries. She grew up just fine and became pretty high up with a big name insurance company. Daddy was a truck driver.

Mim...Oh the Dynasty clothes. Do I remember! Every shirt and sweater had shoulder pads for a while, and everyone looked like minitiature football players. LOL

I had forgotten all about Saturday Night Fever and Grease. My daughter has the tape and must have watched Grease like 50 times by now. *smiles* John Travolta in his all white suit dancing with his woman under the lights *more than a woman, more than a woman to meeeee...* I was still pretty young, but I thought it was dreamy.... *smiles*

Do someone remember that comic about a cat and its gang, that live in an alley and a policeman always pursuing them????
In spanish is "Don Gato y su pandilla" and the policeman was called "Matute". Please tell me about the name but in english!!.

I also forgot the name of the serie of "Maxwell Smart" Super Agent 86 with a weird shoe-phone and try to fighting aganist K.A.O.S.

Remember "Bonanza" and "Highway to Heaven". "Hill Street Blues", "Lassie" and "Superman" in black and white, "Perry Mason" and "Ironside", "The Incredible HULK", "Love Boat"

I had posters and photos of Leif Garret , Scott Baio and Andy Gibb.
Also like Shawn and David Cassidy.

I also used wide belts with big ornaments, furry or crocheted bags and big, big earrings.

I was shocked when saw "Earthquake" with Charlton Heston and don´t want to go to the beach ´cos "Jaws" impressed me so much.

My favorites songs forever:"Love is in the air", "Hotel California", "Dust in the Wind","Fantasy", "Stairway to Heaven" and "Bridge over troubled waters".

SouthernG...I love you. You remember Laugh-In!

Judy Carne, the "Sock it to me girl"

Artie Johnson (Veeeerrry Interesting...but stupid)

Lilly Tomlin, the telephone operator (Geraldine?) (Finger inside cleavage, and saying "Hello, is this the person to whom I'm speaking to?" in that nasal voice!) also played the little girl in the
big chair (Edith Ann)

Henry Gibson (A Flower...by Henry Gibson)

Joanne Worley (the screamer)

and my girl Goldie Hawn (real skinny, but always cute as a button)

I can't remember what the old lady's name was who kept hitting Arte Johnson, as the dirty old man, with the purse.

Oh the Love Boat!!! I loved that show. You know something funny, when it first came on air my grandparents would not let me watch it because they thought it was too "racey." LOL Instead they made me watch "Hee Haw" *frown* When I was a little older we would make a night of watching Love Boad and Fantasy Island.
On the weekends when I was a young teen we would all go to the roller rink and "hang out." You would hope the hot guy would ask you to couple skate with him, and if you were really cool you could skate backwards in front of him when he finally did ask.
Do you remember the first boy you "went steady" with?

onetiger
12-11-2002, 12:07 PM
I was a late bloomer and went to a very conservative private school where I knew way too much about the guys. So I didn't "date" until college (gasp!). My first steady guy was a lacrosse player, senior, nicknamed "Boz" who was 6'6", huge and had a long flowing mane of blond hair. My mom was scared. And he treated me like such a lady - didn't lay a hang on me the entire time...we just chatted, kissed and enjoyed each other's company for about 2 months. No one else understood it. But he was a great first boyfriend!

Nessa

I meet my first BF when i was 15, and dated him until 17, our relation was naive but beautiful, we just kissed, and kissed, and kissed. Ended ´cos my parents didn´t like him ´cos he had a hippie type and play in a rock band.
I didn´t see him again.:(

Yeah, her name was Gladys. She always smacked the poor dirty old man with the purse, but you knew she wanted his wrinkled bod so bad!

Joannalee, Ruth Buzzi is right, she played Gladys.

Mim, along the animated series route, how about "Marine Boy" and "Johny Quest?" and the great "Speed Racer?" Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer Gooooooooo...

And, of course, Felix the Cat, the wonderful wonderful cat, whenever he gets in a fix, he reaches into his bag of tricks, Felix The Cat, the wonderful wonderful cat, you'll laugh so much your sides will ache, your heart will go pitter-pat, watching Felix, the wonderful cat!
http://www.gifs.net/animate/anmatcat.gif
And let's not forget that beautiful petite blonde genie. Barbara Eden still fits into that tiny costume she wore during those 5 (?) years as "I Dream of Genie." Is that sick or what?

My mom didn't let us go out on dates (six sisters) so that explains why I have so much "old" TV knowledge.

I loved, loved, loved, just loved this tall, dark, handsome guy when I was fifteen. I guess he was my fist bf, and had to sneak a little to just get the best kisses of my life. Up to this day, he was the love of my life. His name was Jessee.

My first real boyfriend, Mike, was my first year in high school. He was popular, good-looking AND...had a car!!!! Woo hoo!
When we were together we used to kiss for hours on end.....until my lips would literally hurt! LOL Oh my gosh, we spent so many hours on the phone, my Dad would get so upset!!! Of course, judging by my 11 hour call with the last guy when we first started talking, I guess I never quite got over that habit, huh? *smiles*
Gosh, it was all so innocent and sweet, wasn't it?

Ahhh yes, Johnny Quest and his dog Bandit and friend Hadji and dad and his friend Race. Hmmm....wonder why there werent any WOMEN on that show????? Oh and then there was Batman (Adam West) and Robin, the Boy Wonder. Gee, no wonder I always liked Robin best...guess I even liked the ym better back then lol. And I remember watching the Munsters and Adams Family and Dark Shadows and when I was really little Alfred Hitch****, wooooooooooo  You couldnt PAY me to watch a scary movie now!!! Someone mentioned Alias Smith & Jones and I just lovvvvvved the cute curly haired guy - gosh I cant even remember his name!!! Also I remember watching Land of the Lost and Time Tunnel and Twilight Zone. Those were some pretty far-fetched shows lol.

My first boyfriend experience was awful!!! I dated this guy for 2 years (from 15 to 17) and didnt even really like him. He was controlling and we didnt have anything in common - I just thought no one else would ask me out!!! I dont even remember him being a good kisser or anything. Geez louise, what a dummy I was!!!! At least I've learned (after 30 years) its better to be alone than with someone who makes you miserable!!!:p But he was older than me, so thats probably what the whole problem was!! The funny thing is, he still lives here in my town and I always get this funny feeling when I have to wait on him at work - wondering if he remembers all that time we dated !!!!!

Does anyone remember MOD SQUAD with Peggy Lipton?? I wanted to be her so badly with that long, beautiful, blonde hair. I know it came on at 7:30 p.m., just can't remember the night, but they were soooo cool.

I remember MOD SQUAD with Peggy Liption Michael Cole and Clarence (wtf was his last name).

also my kids are amazed I can tell them about where i was the night Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.

again.

Nessa, his name is Clarence Williams III. He played Prince's father on Purple Rain. As a matter of fact, he was the only "actor" in the bunch. The rest were just part of a real bad movie with an awsome soundtrack!

And Kudos to you, my dear. M*A*S*H* is one of the greatest series ever.

And SouthernG, as soon as I remember the names of Smith and Jones I'll pass along, cuz I loved those guys, especially the dark haired one.;)

I remember Alias Smith & Jones too, and didn't the cute one die years ago from a brain tumor or something like that? Gosh, what was his name, I can see his face so clearly, he was GORGEOUS!! He had big dimples, right? Is this the right show??

Now, really go down memory lane...does anyone remember a show called "The New People" with Ziggy Hall (I think that was his name, he was hot), but it didn't last too long. It came out the same year as Land of the Giants did...or Hullabaloo?

Remember when David Soul from Starsky & Hutch had a hit record?? (Don't give up on me baby)!!

How about the song that wouldn't stop playing....

"YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE"..da, da, da, da from Debbie Boone, I think I cried the first time I heard that one.

Now I will spend the rest of my spare time today trying to figure out the actor from Alias Smith and Jones, it'll drive me crazy!!

Karen Carpenter's Christmas song, "I wish you a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year too"...I loved that song and her voice.

Boy, can't you just go on and on once you start??

Maggs
12-13-2002, 08:46 AM
I GOT IT!! Alias Smith & Jones stars were Ben Murphy and Pete Duel, (he was the one that I liked). Ben played Kid Curry, and Pete Duel starred in a 60's show, "Love on a Roof Top" with Judy Carne. He died of a gun shot wound, not cancer. This was going to drive me crazy so I did a little research and found some info!!!!

You have to excuse me from interrupting the memories for a second...I didnt' really think that this was worthy of a whole other thread but..
Hey, you guys that have been here for a while..do you remember that guy named Kenson? The college guy that was marrying a woman in her 60s? And we all wished him best luck and asked for wedding pics etc...Does anyone remember this?
Because last night in a bored state I was skimming the web for other sites...and I am reading along and who should I come across but Kenson! Who has now magically been married to "Liz" for 12 years...Supposedly he is in his 30s now. He also mentions the attractions to cigarettes thing, calls her by the same name..and they still have the same age difference, but the story of how they met and how long they have been married etc is totally different.
Let me say, I HATE when people do stuff like that here...big stories full of lies..and for what? Just to see our response? Anyway, I just thought I would mention it. No wonder he took off about the time we wanted pictures of his wedding... :( I had to vent...
Now back to happy memories!

The big Alias Smith and Jones mystery is solved Yayyyyyy!

Thanks Maggs. I loved Pete Duel. My sister and I drooled over him every week. I am so sorry to hear about his fate, too bad. He was so hot though!:(

But, I need to clarify that Pete had a whole bunch of black wavy hair and the most beautiful dimples. You don't know how many fantasies I had about running my fingers through his hair.;)

Ben Murphy was the one with curly brown hair.

And Maggs I think, and correct me if I am wrong, that song that David Soul sang was actually written for his wife, whom he was accused of having battered. It was actually an apology song to her from him. It was really a sad but beautiful song.

The words to that song do explain that he went too far the night before and he wants her to give him another chance and not give up on their love.

And both Love on a Rooftop and Love American Style were also on my list of must see's.

Maggs
12-14-2002, 01:07 PM
YEAH, I think Pete Duel was my first TV crush too, wasn't he hot?? Go on the sight, Alias Smith & Jones and you'll see photos of him.

I heard David Soul beat his wife too, didn't know that song was written to her, but after singing the few words I do remember, it does fit in.

I'm so glad someone else remembers Love on the Roof Top and Love American Style too! I have to say, the only thing I would say I miss by being with my husband who is younger, is remembering and laughing about the old shows. Most of the ones he remembers is just because he watched them in syndication, we were the true Prime Time groupies!!!!

Didn't Bobby Sherman have a top 40 hit too? A few years ago, Three Dog Night came to my City and performed in an Octoberfest type thing, and they were fantastic! Who can forget, "One is the lonliest number"!!!! I was going crazy dancing and singing with my in-laws who are older than I am, but were teens in the 60's when a lot of their music was big. I had a blast!!

As Babs would say...Memories, like the corner of my mind :-)

I remember that song, but did not even know David Soul was the one who sang it! You learn something new every day! And your right, Maggs, the words do fit.

Wow..I got half way through these posts and just couldn't go on..I had to write myself! ~laffs~ Reading all that brings back the memories. Turkish Taffy...I still look for that! That had to be my fave candy. I asked someone at a candy store in our mall if they could still get it a few years ago. She looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language! ~lol~

Let's see...Captain Kangaroo..he was national. And I'm not positive but I think Mr. Green Jeans lived or was from somewhere around my area in PA. I do know that Davy Jones has a house about 45 mins to an hour from me and Mary Tyler Moore also has a home somewhere in PA. Davy Jones, fyi, was arrested several years back for DUI. He spent the night in the county jail. When that happened..and I'm sorry I'm straying here...but the tune sleepy jean? Cheer up davy jones..no more sobs and moans.. you're a drunk driving monkee but you'll soon be going home.. ~laffs~ Ah well...

Okay..other things I remember..

Earth shoes...Top Cat (the cartoon)...Lincoln Logs...the MIA/POA bracelets...tea berry candies..are they still around?? Umm..we had a great amusement park near us with a huge pool and what not..unfortuntely it closed then the funhouse burned and now it's a development. It was called Rolling Green Park. I remember George of the Jungle, The Courtship of Eddie's Father, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, Hazel, The Patty Duke Show, Mood Rings, bell bottoms, moon boots..oh man..I'm reaching for some of these ya know..~laffs~ Also, a local show from around here.. I didn't think my first post to these boards would be over *this*, but here goes...

Parachute pants. Especially the ones with zippers that ran all the way down the sides, exposing a flap of material that was a different color.

Leather ties.

Devo.

Trans Ams with that back-and-forth red light thingie in the front, a la "Knight Rider" (sp?)

Mullet hairdos. (Wait...I still see those.)

More 70's than 80's, and I was young, but still remember it: the "Marathon Bar" -- a thin, foot-long candy bar made of chocolate-covered caramel. Had this braided look. I lost a tooth to one of those things.

Does anyone remember Thunderbirds? ya know that freaky cartoon-like one with the marionettes? I loved it!

Or also....an old band from the late 60's, The Seeds?

- That awful hairdo by Sassoon, cut short on one side, longer on the other

- Those cool stocking-boots, like psychedelic pantyhose with boots attached to em'

- the first bell-bottoms, where we ripped open the side of the jeans and sewed in tapestry-type material, or sewed guitar straps around the bottom of the jeans

- knee-high moccasins

- comic books were 10 cents

or way, way back, when TV only had programming at night
(whew, that's dating me big time!) :)

Love this thread! I've been so busy dealing with Christmas that I'm late in jumping in but here goes...

It's funny but at the store we have vintage clothes from the 70's on back, the boss has an aversion for 80's clothes. lol 80's music does get played in the store by the sales girls (including my daughter). The boss and I can only take it for so long then we have to change it to something to our liking. Usually something more recent than the 80's. :)

New versions of old things selling at the store...

Mood rings, giant 60's rings, Elvis shirts, Marilyn purses, various Betty page things, various things with pin up girls from the 20's to the 50's, bell bottoms, knit tops 70's style, platform shoes, 70's leather belts, various tye dye clothing, large floppy leather hats, lace and hand knit shawls. Just to name a few things that has come back and are popular with the high school, college set. This are all the same things I remember when I was their age. :D

Ok things I remember in general...

Bugs Bunny, Bulwinkle, The Jetsons, Gumby, The Flintstones, George of the Jungle (the cartoon), Captain Kangeroo, with Miss Worm, Mighty Mouse, Top Cat, Beanie and Cecile, the Red Skelton Show, The Ed Sullivan, The original version of the Twilight Zone and all the rest of the shows mentioned.

Things I remember... Choosing afternoon kindergarden so I could stay up later at night and sleep in the morning. I was born a night owl! lol the day JFK died. Seeing it on the black and white tv while eating my breakfast. I told my mom about it but she didn't believe me till I showed her the tv. I remember the stunned look on her face. I was 5 years old.

The choice of regular or chocolate milk everyday in kindergarden. I always tried to have chocolate.

My first crush was in kindergarden. He had bright red hair and freckles all over his face, his name was Rusty and I thought he was the best thing to come along since Animal Crackers and Kool Aid!

Keds tennis shoes that had rubber going over the toes. Princess telephones that you had to dial with your fingers, before push button phones were made. Seeing The Wizard of Oz in color for the first time. Learning that there was more than 3 channels on the tv. Listening to AM transister radios and discovering FM for the first time. Bikes with no speeds but your own leg power. Resin grapes. BTW we have those at the store too. :)

That's it for now. Back to making things for Christmas. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Jody. You got a good thread here. :D

Sea Monkeys! Ya know, I used to read comic books when I was little, and those ads were always in there. Looked like a regular little monkey family!!!! There was a mom and dad, and kids, and didn't they have little crowns on or something? Hee. And then you'd get the sea monkeys, and they were just little brine shrimp. I feed frozen ones to the saltwater fish at work, and as they are drifting down thru the tank, I think about that. Ah well!

Has anyone else been watching the series on VH-1...I love the 80's? Last night I caught it and was able to watch 1986 & 1987...my final high school years & beginning of college. It was SO funny to remember some of the stuff (watched it with my roommate who is a few years older). If you get a chance to see it...do!

MY FIRST KISS!!!

It was in 1975, I was 12, about to be 13, and I kissed a boy named "Russel". We went together for about a week (my parents didn't know, but it wasn't a big deal anyway. We were never alone!). The neighborhood kids dared us to kiss for 30 seconds. We took the dare. You know, I still remember it like it was yesterday. That kiss seemed to take FOREVER!

I remember playing Barbies. I had the swell '70's Barbie "apartment" or something. It was a case that folded out. It looked like an efficiency apartment.

Hey, did you hear about "Divorced Barbie"? She comes with all of Ken's stuff! :D

My best friend had a "Chatty Kathy" doll. Remember those? You raised the arm up and the doll would record what you said, then you'd put the arm down, and the doll would play it back to you. We recorded my dad singing in the shower. I think we laughed for two hours solid! :D My dad's voice coming out of that doll!

oh my gosh!

I still have my chatty Cathy doll! She had little records that went in her back....I believe they are gone. And I had that Barbie apartment thingy...it was my sister's. The Barbie had wigs...3 of them, so you could change haircolors.

I saw the VH-1 show "Remember 1987" It shocked me that Bill Clinton didn't learn from Gary Hart. But Bill Clinton was lucky we were less stricter in 1999 then 1987.

I remember the comic book ads that sell X-Ray Glasses. How to get Arnold Swerzenagger's body. Damn Truth in Adverstising.
Now those adds are gone.

I remember when comic books were episodic. Now I have to read six to twenty comic books to get a whole story.

First of all, let's all try to name Top Cat's gang....There was Fancy, and then Brain was the little orange one with the purple shirt, and uh...oh man....I think that's all I can name. There was the pink one with a white shirt, was that Fancy? OH, and Spook! Maybe the pink one was Spook! and the green one with a black tie, and the brown one with a white tie.....

Anyway...I still have my Chatty Cathy too. Mine had a string in back that you pull and she talks. Cept she doesn't talk anymore...you pull the string and she just says "lkekjkmeklmklgskhlksjfksjffgrrrrrrrrbleh". I also had Chatty Baby, but she got accidently thrown away this summer. I liked that Chatty Cathy had two front teeth. And, yes, I remember her says "I love you" with a funny emphasis on the word "I". And, I had the cardboard Barbie appt too, it was SO cool, I wish I still had it. It had a hard cardboard bed, stereo, TV, chair, stool, couch....had neato closets and junk. Was so cool. My sister had the fashion store with a stage for modeling the clothes, shelves and display cases and stuff. I still have all my Barbies and clothes. I have always loved ragdolls. Had a green one I named "Ammonia". Don't remember why. And then, I loved my Raggedy Ann and Andy. In fact, I loved them so much that now I always buy the old ones in garage sales when I see them. I have scads of them now. Only the old ones, don't like the newer ones.

I was born in 56, so was a kid in the 60's and a teen in the seventies. In about ninth grade or so, wearing crushed velvet pants, crushed velvet hotpants with a wide belt, earth shoes, tri color suede shoes, VERY short dresses , but also midi's and maxi's. Smock tops, Keep on Truckin, Happy faces, dried flowers, Pet Rocks, PoW, MiA bracelets, I was the first in my school to get wire rim glasses instead of plastic frames. We called them Granny glasses.

In elementary school we all carried our lunches, but the milkman came around to every class and set a case of little bottles of milk outside each door just before lunch time. For that matter, we had a milkman at home, also. We had a metal box outside, and the milkman would come (I don't remember how often) and would put glass bottles of milk in that metal box.

Nearly every friend I had was named Debbie, Linda, Sandy, Diane, Kathy, Sue, but I think most of them were named Debbie.

Dat's it for now....

Kye, I can't recall the other cats in the "Top Cat" cartoon, but I think the cop that was always after them was "Officer Wimbleman"? Does that sound right?

Yeah, we made Barbie and Ken do perverted stuff too when we got a little older! :D

I remember when I was pretty little, we had a metal box outside our back door for the milk man. I remember our mean next door neighbors too. They were a retired couple, I can't remember their last name now, I was about 7, but anyway, they were always irritated with us. My parents were exceptional people, the yard was clean and well-kept, they freaked out if we shrieked and screamed outside, and they were so nice to everyone (my dad was a friggin minister!!!) but these people just didn't like kids. If we put one foot in their yard, they acted like we were felons! Oh God! I remember their name! It was Medikey! I don't know if I spelled it right. I'm sure it's an Irish name.

I remember when they sold turtles the size of a quarter at the "dime store" for $.75 cents. Apparently, they gave kids Salmonella and now turtles have to be 4 inches in diameter. Shame! I had my turtle 14 years and let him go in a friend's pond.

Wonder years! :)

Barbies, I had tons of them.... and the games we played.... mom wouldn't let me have a Ken doll so we grabbed any handy GI Joe...

I had hot pants, minis, midis and maxi skirts, peanut jeans that were so low on my hips I can't remember how they stayed up. Blue Swede Platform shoes. saturday morning cartoons 3 networks and PBS.

no tbeing able to six close to the tv for fear we would get radiation from the color tv tubes. dial phones and dial tvs albums and 4s. I had a zillion 45s. I still have about 500 albums.... can't bear to part with them, my kids think it's funny.

I remember Betsy Wetsy and I had a Nancy Nurse doll too. I remember knitted ponchos and sweater vests and big bulky sweaters ala Starsky and Hutch... I have mine my grandmother made for me.

ah memories.....

Officer Dibble....then the cats were Benny, Brain, Choo Choo and Fancy. I was wrong about the little fat one...that one was blue, and his name is Benny. Brain is the little orange one. They lived in Hoagie Alley, in Manhattan.

Blondie! You lived in a funeral home? Just like in My Girl! That's so cool.

Remember Ditto pants! Or how about Chamin de Fer, Tuxedo pants!

How about feather roach clips you would wear in your hair!

Rememer Babe perfume!!

How 'bout that song, Jenny... 8675309 by Tommy Two Tone. Or, My Sherona!! Haaa!

Remember you couldn't eat pop rocks & drink a coke together or you could DIE!!!

OMG Kye, I can't believe how retarded I am! OFFICER DIBBLE!!!

Blondie, when your neighbor shrieked that at you, you should have said, "'Careful, lady, an inside source tells me you're not too far off from the pearly gates!!!" :D

I used to walk half a mile to my friend's house when I was five! What's wrong with the world when kids can't do that? We live in a rural setting now, where kids can, but when we hit town it's so different. And when kids come to stay here, their paranoid parents are like, "So they won't GO ANYWHERE, RIGHT???" I feel like telling them, "Look, your kid would more likely be attacked by a deer than a person out here. RELAX and let them just be kids for once!!" The big entertainment with my kids is to camp out and build bonfires. I like that a whole lot better than hanging around gangs or malls.

I remember one summer, we drove to Florida in a FORD TORINO with NO AIR CONDITIONING! It was my first trip to Florida. We have gone ever since. We graduated from cars to planes, but now that I have kids, it's back to cars, only it's a VAN with AIR CONDITIONING and so much space, the kids don't even have to breathe the same damned air!! I remember in the early days, when my brother used to take his feet and ram me up against the door on "my side" of the car! God forbid if I ever fell asleep against the bastard! Kids with their own bench seats. That should be required for trips.

Polly, I was thinking about your trip in the Torino and remembering back in the day when we all had those HUGE cars with the bench seats. I had a humongous Plymouth Fury......that car would plow through anything. Shoot, I can't fit my three kids the back seat of my car anymore.....And didn't it seem like cars only came in like five colors back then....

I was chuckling just now as I remember more family road trips...anyone remember THIS line? "Moooom, he's looking at me!":D So much time spent in a little space, suddenly, a kid can get irritated just by being LOOKED AT! Remember the seat belts that became branding irons in the summer? You know, the ones we weren't required to wear? Eventually, they'd just get shoved deep down in the seat crack. How about the lame road games? We played "I spy", the license plate game, and sang lame songs. Being kids, and having no real concept of time, we'd as "ARE WE THERE YET?" about every five minutes. My mom smoked, and I'm sure we'd drive her to it on those trips, but she'd smoke with the windows rolled up! She smoked True menthols. They have to be the grossest cigarettes ever made! They smelled even worse on the other end. Nobody discussed second-hand smoke back then. Ironically, my mom quit smoking when my son was born. She didn't want to "pollute" his air! :D Polluting ours was fine though. Oh, and she's so anal about my kids wearing their seatbelts, but hey, my brother and I could have been hood ornaments at any time, we NEVER wore ours!

How about the lame roadside diners? Ever gone to one of those? Some waitress named "Myrna" would come up with a beehive hairdo and a mustache, and of course, a cigarette dangling out of the corner of her mouth because SMOKING WAS EVERYWHERE back then! Anyway, she'd take our breakfast order, and my dad would always specify ANYTHING but GRAPE jelly! He just couldn't stand grape jelly. So guess what she'd bring back? A whole bowlful of packets of grape jelly! It happened just about every time. They always undercooked the eggs too. I always got mine scrambled, but they were still "runny". It would make me nauseous.

How about the motels? They'd sound so nice in the AAA book, but once we got there, some shady guy at the front desk, cigarette dangling from the corner of his mouth, nametag saying "Ira Joe" would wait on us and give us kids a leery grin with missing teeth. We'd get to our room, which, of course smelled like cigarette smoke, and turn on the t.v. Back then there wasn't CABLE, you just had to watch whatever the local channels had to offer, and they never came in well. We'd go for a swim in the pool, but the chlorine would be so strong it would make our eyes practically burn out of our heads! My brother and I would end up playing cards until we got into a fight over cheating, and then go to sleep on those ultra thin sheets with starch on them.

Ahhhhh the good old days!:)

Oh the memories, family trips!
When I was 10 in 1974 my family took a trip in the truck with the topper and a homemade bed in the back, and the Star Craft pop up trailor hitched behind, man we were all that LOL!! My little brother was 2 at the time so he rode in the truck with mom and dad, and my brother 8 and I rode in the back. We had a "pee can" that was actually a coffee can. I remember me and my brother being so damn bored riding for hours to South Dakotas Flintstone City and Mount Rushmore.
I remember when it rained in that Star Craft pop up, a plinking sound, it lulled us to sleep.
I especially loved Medora North Dakota, home of Teddy Roosevelt.
Our family trips always consisted of educational trips.
Those were fun days.

Polly
12-23-2002, 09:56 PM
Yeah Snow, back in our day, kids were allowed to ride in the back of the truck.

We went on camping trips too. The very first time we did, we just had a regular tent, and we went with two other families. The grown-ups stayed up after the kids went to bed and were out talking by the campfire, when in walked THREE SKUNKS into our tent!!! The grown ups watched in horror, motionless, not knowing what to do. They decided not to do anything. They just sat there, and presently, the skunks came back out. We knew nothing of it of course, because we were alseep, and apparently we didn't scare the skunks because they didn't spray, but the next morning my folks told us all about it. Oh, and I went to the bathroom at one of those campground bathrooms one night, and my mom said I let out a shriek that brought every camper outside. I saw a HUGE daddy longlegs!:D

My folks invested in a camper after that. One week we went camping and it rained half the time. We were stuck inside playing cards and monopoly, and my parents were firm believers that t.v. had no place in a campground. I really resented that! It was nice to get lulled to sleep by the rain though, as you said Snow P.

Nessa, my Barbie also used to date GI Joe....he was much sexier than that Ken doll they had out in the sixties.

Maggs....yeah! Colorforms! I loved them! I swear they were more interesting than the ones they have out now. I remember I had one that was a baby in a nursery, with all it's little accessories and stuff, and the highchair tray went up and down and stuff, and the cupboards opened.

It's Christmas Eve here, and I am babysitting everyone's pets for the holidays. Right now I am watching nine cats, three dogs, and three birds. Everyone is getting along well. The youngest dog is a bit of a pill tho, have to keep her from getting into ribbon and stuff. And the ****atiel keeps calling my dog...drives her bananas. Oh, Blondie, my cat is fine now. My older cat is almost 17 yrs old, and gets to barfing quite often. She's ok. I work at a vet hosp, so she gets all the tests she needs. (My animals HATE going to work with me!!!!)

Anyway...family trips. We used to go on them every year. My sister and I, my mom and my dad, all in the family station wagon just like the Griswolds. My sister and I fought terribly. Actually, I was an angel (ha) but my sister (three years older) thought I had cooties, big time. I was small, so they made me sit way in the back with the luggage. They cleared out a little spot for me, put down a beach towel so it wouldn't be hot, and gave me a pillow. I brought my dolls, and comic books, I was fine. And far enough in the back that my sister couldnt' reach me. She didn't want me touching her, or breathing her air. Sigh. I remember the squeaky cooler always squeaked as the car was going...hated that sound. And where the hell was my seat belt! Geeze! Ah well. Every summer we'd zip around the U.S., seeing stuff like the Grand Canyon. My dad always went miles out of his way to see every little attraction, too....like the biggest ball of yarn, etc. And he loved caves, we went to a lot of caves, much to my mother's chagrin, as she was clausterphobic. In Death Valley, it was so hot, we cooked Ravioli on the dashboard of our car, right in the cans. When we were older, we went on cooler trips, to Europe and Hawaii. I loved all the family vacations. Recently, my sister and I found ourselves in the back seat of our parents' car, it was weird. Very nostalgic moment. I couldn't resist, I gave my sister a big shove, then stuck my head between my parents and whined "ARE WE THEEEERRRRE YET???!!" heheheheheh.

Schmanks for the memories.....

Yes from reading what alot of people posted what about HR Puffnstuff the crazy acid trip little series that kept me entertained for hours. I remember speed buggy grape ape, hong kong fuey, jabberjaw thundar and all those great lost cartoons. 6. Bonne Bell

7. Clogs

8. My Three Sons and Jacques Cousteau

9. The very first pair of Nikes

10. Bay City Rollers!!! S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night!!

chat cat....yeah, i remember love's baby soft! and i remember a lemon perfume, can't remember what that was, but i know it was popular. and then i had this hyacynth perfume....can't remember the maker.

and yep...i had toe socks.

bonne bell....that brought back some memories. my parents sent me to Charm School. lol!!!! the Sears School for Young Charmers, no kidding. and then i did a little modeling for Sears. but, at charm school, when we were on the Make-up chapter, we all got a big round box full of free Bonne Bell products. I still remember our instructor telling us it should take about fifteen minutes to apply our mascara properly. heeee.

i met paul anka once. yeah, i remember that goofy song.

yeah, blondie...that Talking Tina episode shook me up as well. after that, i made my chatty cathy sleep in the closet, under a lot of stuff. no more sitting on the shelf leering at me. i remember an episode where this little boy was really spoiled, because if you said something bad about him, he'd make you disappear and go about six feet under the ground out back or something like that. so, he always got everything he wanted. the boy was played by billy mumy. he was MY first crush....remember him as will robinson on Lost in Space.

and, we had a weird guy in the neighborhood too. he unfortunately owned the comic book store. his name was kenny. he was creepy and hated kids. we were all scared of him. there were signs all over in the store, and i mean ALL over, that said "NO LOITERING", and if you looked at the comics too long, he'd come over and stare you down.

that's all i got for now.

OK, you made me post finally!

I remember voting for Kennedy in my 3rd grade classroom's mock voting booth. Seeing the events in Dallas a couple years later when he died (on a TV brought into my classroom). The world just stopped for a while...

The British invasion of music.. the first Beatles' song I heard was "Can't Buy Me Love", then soon after my cousin sent me the 45 of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand".

Paisley shirts, The London Look, Twiggy...
Hippy days (I was in Wichita, Kansas at the same time Frank Zappa said, "I hear they're freaking out in Kansas"), love-ins in the park and headshops...
I NEVER wore shoes, and the asphalt in Kansas in summer was so hot it was melting, but my feet were like leather. Bellbottoms, ponchos, beads and peacesigns... Vietnam...

I remember the first woman I ever met who <gasp!> didn't wear a bra. (My best friend's older beatnick sister.) I took off my bra immediately and never wore a regular bra again!

Star Trek... a friend inherited his parents house at a young age, and we all gathered there at 4PM every day in the first run of syndication to watch it. During its original broadcast it was on during Friday nights. I was never home to see it!

First boyfriend: redneck with really short hair... we picked up a long haired hitchhiker in 67 and he made fun of the guy's hair. Then asked me if I'd ever date a guy with hair like that. I said YES!!! And from then on, I did.

My first rock concert was Black Sabbath and Mountain. Black Sabbath had one album out. They were totally surprised at the freaks in Kansas. Back then I was a music snob and only listened to "Underground Radio", disdaining Top 40 radio. I listened to a lot of Mothers of Invention, Captain Beefheart, It's A Beautiful Day, and later Zep (of course!), Pink Floyd (WAAAY before The Wall), Yes, Jethro Tull, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash...
I remember where I was when Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendryx died.
I saw Hendryx play in San Antonio, Texas at HemisFair in 68. He lit his guitar on fire and played it with his teeth! I was on mescaline for the concert.

I read The Hobbit in 67 because it was the "in" book. Then read Lord of the Rings and my artwork changed from drawing horses all the time, to drawing elves, dragons, castles... all fantasy.

Moved to Colorado in the 70s and spent a lot of time running around in the mountains buck nekkid and stoned. So much FUN!
I didn't own a car for 7 years in Colorado since you could stick your thumb out virtually anywhere and get a ride in seconds. I hitchhiked to all over Colorado, to South Dakota, back and forth to Kansas, and California. Never any problems or feeling endangered.

Nearly all my friends were musicians, in one band or another. Being an artist, my dream then was to do album cover art. The album covers were so beautiful back then. (Instead I became an llustrator for Dungeons and Dragons in the 80s, doing game art and book illustrations.)

Hah. I could go on and on.

I love these boards. Lots of old farts like me, still being unconventional, having romances that seem to shock everyone around us. It's great to have people to share it with. :)

British Invasion 1960: Beatles, Rolling Stones changed American music forever.
British Invasion 2002: Mark Millar, Alan More, Neil Gaiman. Changed American comics forever.

Speaking of comics. Maybe that's why the comic book industry is complaning that they can't get new readers. Because of Creapy comic book shop owners. (see previous two posts)

I like to ask a few questions.
1. Do you read comic books today?

2. Do you still read comic books today?

3. Did you stop reading comic books and why?

Well have a good day.
Chad.

Chad, Robin has an extensive comic book collection. He keeps them in special "comic book boxes". The comic books are each encased individually in plastic. He buys one, reads it without ever creasing a page (God forbid!!!) and delicately places it in a plastic encasing and files it. Then he gets on the computer and adds it to his list. He loves Marvel comics, especially anything WOLVERINE! His friends called him "Logan" when he was a teen.

I remember "jean nate".

I remember "The Twilight Zone". What about the one where there was the ventriliquist with the dummy, and it would come alive when they were alone, and it told the guy to do bad things. Like when he was in his dressing room, this other guy came in and they had a fight and the dummy said, "Hit him with ME, sluggo!" so the ventriliquist takes the dummy and kills the guy with it! Creepy! I remember "Alfred Hitch**** Presents" too. Did you know Alfred Hitch**** had a bit part in each of the episodes? He was always in the background somewhere.

My mom had the Simon and Garfunkel album, "Bridge Over Troubled Waters". That's the only one she had that was "up-to-date". My babysitter left a Monkeys album at our house one time, and my brother and I played it over and over! Only when my dad wasn't home though. He listened to swing.

We always ate dinner together at our dining room table. Eating seperately or at different times was unheard of! Oh, and my mom wore an apron when she cooked.

On Sunday, we all went to church. My dad was a minister at the time (he later took a twelve-year hiatus from the church, but returned to the ministry in his sixties). I was "The minister's daughter" but the only joy I ever got from church was hanging around outside afterwards and catching toads by the handful by the back steps! I liked hanging out in the adjacent cemetery too.

My best friend was Catholic. Her family numbered at 8. I marveled at the chaos in her house. My first crush was her brother, Danny. I thought he was cute as any actor on t.v. I was always trying to get him to notice me, and he was always trying to get us to leave him alone! They had a color t.v., which was a rarity in those days (late sixties). They had the shag carpet, paneling in the basement, and an Airedale named "Bisquit".

Funny how I can't remember what I had for dinner last night, but I can recall all that other stuff!

Last night I had a dream about JEAN NATE perfume:eek:
I could smell the lemony scent!

Remember on the Beverly Hillbillies, Granny always put a dab of Vanilla on her neck when she was getting fancy?
Well long ago I used to do that :)

Now I put some vanilla in a spray bottle, add some water and use it as air freshner :)

AC/DC was pretty big when I was a teen (and still is), Dirty Deeds done Dirt Cheap, and Big Balls

Hi Brandon.....thanks for the compliment on the topic. :)
BTW....Did you ever watch "Schoolhouse Rock" on Saturday mornings? Did they still have that when you were a kid (I think I am 12 years older than you)....
Y'all remember? Conjunction junction, what's your function?
Or...the one that taught you the preamble to the constitution? Or "Three, It's a magic number...A man and a woman had a little baby, yes they did, they were threeeeee in the family, it's a magic number."
Isn't it funny how after all these years I can still remember the words to those songs, but I can't remember the lyrics to a song I heard yesterday.... *smiles*

I do remember Picture Pages with Bill Cosby, but I can only remember part of the song....It seems like it was on more than just Saturday mornings though...seems like in the morning before school. And Gosh, I know a lot of people liked it, but I just detested the Fat Albert cartoon when was little and my brother loved it. Every time I would hear "Hey HEY HEY! Its' FAAAAATTT ALBERT...and I am gonna sing a song for you, and Bill's gonna tell you a thing or two....." I would cringe.
American Bandstand was on after Fat Albert though...so that was a good thing. *smiles*
As I have said before, thanks everybody for your posts on this thread. I wish we could all get together and share our memories in person, but this is the second best thing. And it sure made me smile .....

This is a fun thread. I remember when we did this once before, Polly and Rhiannon had the most amazing childhood and teen years.

Sherwood, I LIKE YOU!!!! D & D art? That is so cool! I would LOVE to see some of your stuff!! I am a huge fan of fantasy art. For money, I paint animal portraits, but for fun, I like drawing and painting fantasy. I have some books full of Julie Bell's stuff, I like her style.

Chad, I used to read comics all the time as a kid. (10 cents way back then) and I kept a lot of my old comics. I don't read any of the new ones tho. I used to read Archie, Little Lulu, Richie Rich, I have some Munster ones and gosh....I can't think of the rest. I'll have to think about that. I have my entire stack of Little Lulu comics still.

I am such a junk collector. I knew I still had my old hyacinth perfume around here somewhere, and I found it. It's from when I was in high school. It's a yellow glass bottle, with a yellow top, and it's Coty..."Sweet Earth" flower fragrances, Soft Mist of Hyacinth. Funny thing, it still smells good! hahahahah!

Here's a funny thing....as a kid, I still remember the deoderant that my parent's had in the medicine cabinet. It was called Non Spy (If I remember correctly) and it was this amber colored liquid roll on. You'd roll it on, kind of reminded me of glue....and then you'd have to walk around with your arms in the air for a while waiting for it to dry. Then it was so crunchy when you put your arms down, it would practically crack off! Ew! Lol!

Brandon....I loved Mr. Ed. "A horse is a horse, of course, of course" THAT song goes thru my head all the time. And I used to watch Bewitched all the time. The nosy neighbor cracked me up.

I have my old Atari and all it's games still. In fact, I've hung on to ALL my old games. I love video games. I was SO excited the day I first bought an NES and the first Mario game. It was a trio of games, Duck Hunt with a gun, and Track Meet with that roll out pad to run on. I thought it was just the coolest, coolest thing. I still play the old NES, and the SNES (the BEST old RPGs were on the SNES!.....Chrono, Evermore, FFantasy, Mana.....) and of course the old Genesis with it's Sonic games. Now I have the 64, the Cube and the PSX2, but out of them all, my SNES was my fav. Better graphics does not a better game make. Unless it's Grand Theft Auto! Muhahahahhaahhaha! OK! Enough!

Well, I have to get off this computer and go to work.....
Bye all....

I love video games! I have my daughters old sega in my bed room and she has a playstation. BTW my parents have an old Nintendo that we all still play on too. I haven't played anything more advanced then the playstation except for the computer. :)

I didn't have a Chatty Cathy but I had a doll called Sister Bell. She was a cartoon character from the Caspar Friendly the Ghost show. She was a favorite doll till she got left out in the rain and couldn't talk anymore. She just gurgled.

I also had a doll called Patta Burp, that I tornmented my mother with.

She was an angelic redhead in a pink dress and the trick was that you gave her, her bottle and when she was done you patted her back and she would burp. My next door neighbor and I both got one for Christmas. We had a bet going as to who could wake up their family first to open up presents. She won by a 1/2 hour. She got her family up at 2:30 AM and I got mine up at 3 AM. lol Our parents weren't too happy with us but they were so tired from playing Santa Clause that we didn't get into trouble. Anyway we both got that same doll. Hers stayed in pretty good shape. Mine on the other hand, well her head came off quite easily. But with her head off the burping was louder and was just spectacular! :D My mom thought she sounded gross but we all thought it was cool! Kind of wished I still had her so I could put her in an sculpture or just keep her because so was so odd. :D Anyway did anyone have those dolls?

And Kye between you and I we could open up a junk aka second hand store with all the crap we have! lol

BTW does anyone remember klackers? They were a fad for a while when I was kid. The fad didn't last long they were pretty dangerous.

Just wanted to add few things to the thread. I'm off to bed! :)

Deelybobbers... I still see them around like on Halloween.

I never had any klackers myself but I had frieds who did. I could get them going a few times but that was it.

As for Patta Burp the doll, with her head off she could burp like a sailor as lon as I kept pushing the button in her back!!!!!! My mom regretted ever buying her for me. lol I think she was only out for a year and was discontinued. I guess she was too gross for the adults. :D

Hey, "Blast From the Past" sounds great!!!! Sounds line fun Kye, lets do it!!! I was going to have a yard sale this spring but I'll save it for our store. :p

Sent to me by my Dear friend:

I Can't Believe You Made It"

If you lived as a child in the 50's, 60's or 70's (and before)
Looking back, it's hard to believe that
we have lived as long as we have...

As children, we would ride in cars with no seatbelts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets.
(Not to mention hitchhiking to town as a young kid!)

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

Horrors: We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones. Unthinkable.

We played dodgeball and sometimes the ball would really hurt. We got cut and broke bones and broke teeth, and there were no law suits from these accidents. They were accidents.
No one was to blame, but us.

Remember accidents?

We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it.
We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank
sugar soda but we were never overweight...
we were always outside playing. We
shared one grape soda with four
friends, from one bottle and no one died from this.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes,
video games , 99 channels on cable, video tape
movies, surround sound, personal cell phones,
personal computers, Internet chat rooms ...
we had friends.............
We went outside and found them.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rung the bell or just walked in and talked to them.

Imagine such a thing. Without asking a parent!
By ourselves! Out there in the cold cruel
world! Without a guardian. How did
we do it?

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and
ate worms and although we were told it would
happen, we did not put out very many eyes,
nor did the worms live inside us forever.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made
the team. Those who didn't, had to learn to deal
with disappointment..... Some students weren't
as smart as others so they failed a grade and
were held back to repeat the same grade.....
Horrors. Tests were not adjusted for
any reason.

Our actions were our own. Consequences were
expected. No one to hide behind. The idea of
a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was
unheard of. They actually sided with the
law, imagine that!

This generation has produced some of the best
risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors,
ever. The past 50 years has been an explosion
of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom,
failure, success and responsibility, and we
learned how to deal with it all.

And if you are one of them.
Congratulations!

Polly

You guys, I found a "Captain Kangaroo" doll in an antique store a few months back, but the proprietor didn't take personal checks or credit cards, and alas, I had no cash! However, reading this thread, I remembered finding that thing! I'm going tomorrow to buy it! It was in perfect condition and she wanted $20 for it. It was about 14 to 16" high and about 5" in diameter. Good find???

Kye and Morf, you open your store and I'll be waiting impatiently outside the front door for you to open!

I remember klackers. Guess what? My brother and his friends used to call my friends and me "Klackers" because we wore those "klacky" platform shoes and our hair flipped up on the sides (you know, when feathered bangs were in). We wore lavender eye shadow, coral lipstick, and either jean nate body spray or some flowery perfume. Cherry-tasting lip gloss! That was big! God, we thought we were sooooo coool! Anyone remember when those "cop" mirror sunglasses were in? I wore those babies out! I was still wearing them in the damned nineties!

My ten-year-old daughter is trying to dress like I did in the seventies! Weird, huh? She likes to wear her hair all those "hippy" ways...two little braids that are brought around and meet in the back, pigtails, braids on the sides with beads in them...she has a pair of sunglasses that look like the ones Janis Joplin wore on her "Greatest Hits" album, you know, when she's sitting on the motorcycle? My son has none of it. He's a sk8tr boi! Baggy clothes, died blonde hair on top, pierced ear, the works. Hey, as long as he gets better grades than I did at his age, and stays away from drugs, I wouldn't give a rat's *** if he crossed-dressed!:D

Brandon....Klackers were two strings, about as long as your forearm, with two really hard balls on the ends that looked like marbles, kinda big tho, and the strings came together in a little loop you put your finger thru. You'd get them going and they'd klack together above your hand, then below, and you keep shaking your hand, and they'd go KLACK KLACK KLACK...thing is, they would shatter, or hit ya in the face. :)

Ya know, I remember as a little kid in the sixties, there was no "easy" food in the kitchen. Food had to be made. Or you ate fruit. I don't recall there being "junk" food around. I don't know when McDonalds and the other fast food places popped up, but we sure didn't have them. You ate your dinners when your mom called you in (since kids were outside playing all the time) and that was that. The one grocery store was about a half hour away. One day an ice cream store appeared on our corner. Wow, was THAT a big deal. So we'd walk there all the time and get ice cream. I remember the price of the cones...10 cents for the regular size, which was HUGE by the way, 15 cents for medium if you were bein a hog, and then there was the GIANT 25 cent one, which no one in their right mind would get, because it was so big. (or maybe I was just really little?) And the root beer, if you ordered one, I think was 20 cents, and it came in a glass, frosted mug. You'd sit and drink it and then give the glass back. There was one little "mom and pop" store within walkin distance. The candy was a penny each, so if we found any money laying around, we'd go buy penny candy. They always had lots of different kinds, all a penny each. When we got bazooka bubble gum, the nice old guy that worked there would always give us way more than we had asked for. We'd save the wrappers and send them in for prizes. Or no, it was the little comics inside that we would save for prizes. Once in a while, my parents would make popcorn, another big deal. We'd get to go to that same little store and we'd each get to pick out one bottle of colored pop. (Cotton Club) I was nuts about grape pop. So, we'd have pop and popcorn.....no microwaves, ya cooked it on the stove. Weeee! I can remember eating popcorn and watching Lassie. If you didn't like what was for dinner, tough...you had to eat it anyway....(or slip it to the dog under the table) Oh, we had to return those pop bottles to the store when they were empty. We'd get money back.

I think that's one reason we all had so many pets. It was something to do! I had turtles, birds, mice, rats, hamsters, cats, dogs. The cages had to be handmade, and they didn't sell cedar chips in the store, we had to go collect some from the local sawmill. Ok, did I just live out in the boonies or something? Or was that the way it was???!!!

Terry, I looked online for your Patty Burp doll! Are you sure you remembered her name right? I wanted to see what she looked like, and I couldn't find her.

We had one big Toy Store, called Toyland. It was so cool, I LOVED going there. When you walked in, the first rows had little boxes full of little things that only cost a few cents each. All kinds of goofy stuff. Then around the corner were the white boxes of Barbies. Barbie, Midge, Ken, Allen, Skipper and her friend with the ponytails...what was her name? I loved looking at their packages of clothes. Cool little accessories. If I was lucky that day, my folks would buy my Barbie a new outfit. In those days, you had ONE Barbie, and then got her a lot of clothes. Now days, it seems they fix it so you constantly have to buy new Barbie dolls, so eventually your kid has a stack of Barbies a mile high. To get a cool new outfit, you gotta buy a new doll. Sigh. Oh, then there was the stuff I would drool over, but never got. :( Like the Little Princess M
