Nibbles! I got a butt licker too!

Nibbles: I was reading your other post, and I see that you have a butt licking dog as well. I decided to throw out this post, see if you or anyone has any ideas. Sophicles just started on this butt licking thing, maybe a month or two ago, she's 5...and I don't know how to stop her. Now she coughs up butt hairs, after particularly good licking sessions. Gross.
I can't really find anything online, and my vet told me it may just be irritated and rub it down with Desitin...or anything else with Lanolin in it. I did that and its ok, but she rubs her butt on the rug to get the Lanolin taste off...and then goes to town licking her butt. Plus she's black so the desitin turns her butt bright purple. The neighbors look at me even funnier.
Any tips? I'm about to stick human anti-fingernail biting stuff on her butt. But I'm not sure that's safe.

Hey, how about that bitter apple stuff like @ Petsmart? I just had my doggie nuetered and they said if he started licking his stitches to get that and spray on him and he wouldnt do it anymore. Maybe that would work.

Gee I am not sure you want to hear this whole story but here goes. My dog has had this butt licking fetish for a couple of months now. She licks it so much for so long she has sores as well. I tried the cone on her head for a month and she has figured out how to get around it. I tried the bitter apple stuff too. I finally last week took her to the vet to rule out something else happening. She has a small bacterial infection from the licking but that is it. They gave me a something that looks like a neck brace that is supposed to keep her from licking by making her stiff necked in theory. Well she is so long that she managed to get around that too. I was at my wits end and almost got to the point where I would have to kennel her all day when I was gone when I decided to try the neck thing and the cone on the head together. Well it is working now. She can't get to it. I feel bad for her but for goodness sake quit licking the arsh!!!!!

Thats my story and I am sticking to it.

My vet told me it could be hemorroid/anal gland related. He had me start adding high-fiber cereal to her food. I use FiberOne, and put like two or three tablespoons on her food. So far it seems to have helped.

Wow...Nibbles...a lampshade and a collar! That's crazy! I don't know if I have to go that far. We'll see how many times she pukes up her butt hairs on the bed though.

I thought maybe she had an anal sack problem too, so I had them checked. They seemed to be fine, no infection...nothing.


I'll try the bitter apple. Then we're going to duct tape. Then I'll have to move on to lampshade!

Ugh...there's nothing more distracting than trying to have dinner or watch tv...and the dog is giving herself a butt bath!

OK...good luck. I used to feel so bad for my gurlie because she would lick so long and hard, that she'd end up tired and panting! :(
