Actually many men and women have sacrificed their lives for others.....not saying he wasnt a good man....just seems like a stretch to say his sacrifice was anymore important.

Well, I'm with Percy: I'm all for that "stretch." :D

There are people (overpaid politicians) who TALK about freedom, and TALK about how "All men are created equal," blah, blah, blah....

And then there are those who "walk the talk."

MLK was definitely one who walked the talk. Truly a great man in my opinion.

 My reply to that comes straight from Enoch's sig line:

"Better to fight for something than live for nothing." - George S. Patton

MLK wasn't a saint but he was such a deeply focused, powerful person that his influence will be felt as long as this species roams this earth

MLK was an icon that redefined for an entire generation the notion of social justice. Its not that he was the first one to pioneer non-violent protest, but he legitimized it here in my opinion by creating powerful long lasting change.

He's done more for me than an ignorant hack like Christopher Columbus ever did.

I don't know if he ever meant to be a saint, but invaraibly, every year on MLK day someone brings up the fact he wasn't.

I agree Dr. Martin Luther King was a great man, and his legacy is everlasting. He was a peace loving man, not one filled with vitriol and with a chip on his shoulder like so many so-called leaders (African American) today. I think he would be so disappointed to see how his little underlings turned out. Everything is about race for them, because they have no real vision and no real dream as he did, that is, to have ALL races sit at the table and be brothers/sisters.. His legacy is one of the most far-reaching and most powerful, and like Gandhi, did pay the ultimate price for his ideals. :)

Welll, there have been other people who have sacrificed their lives for others. Some have done it anonymously and in the privacy of misery and some have done it on a larger scale.

All I know is that a few years ago I downloaded "I have a dream"( illegally) and each time I listen to it, I have big, heavy tears in my eyes.

People like Martin Luther King or Ghandi come and go, and unfortunately history keeps repeating itself.

How I wish that the words of such people could be as a fundemental part of school education as how to add numbers.

I submit to you that if a man hasn't discovered something he will die for, he isn't fit to live.

LOL....I like my dog better than most people!

I don't think you are rare in anyway, SomeDude. I think its just a very, American type of worldview...rightly or wrongly. Its kinda like...when Western Europeans or Canadians, are like...what do you mean not everyone has health insurance in America? How do those people take care of themselves if they get sick? And the answer is generally...who knows...they ain't me, so I don't worry about it.

Nothin' against you, hope you know that. S'all good bro.

Btw: its kind of an inside joke, whenever my fiance and I hear or see something like that...he'll sing the opening lines of God Bless America. The etymology of it, in case anyone is wondering, was in reaction to Major League Baseball getting rid of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and replacing it with "God Bless America" after 9/11.

No ill feelings, I like to argue and get people worked up. My girlfriend told me to behave too, so I guess I better listen to her. Heh.

But yes, dogs are the best thing on this earth. I'm a little too close to mine...

I hope you don't mean I don't have dignity? To many, I'm sure I don't. But it only matters what I think.

I know I'm not comeing across as a good guy, but I truly am. If we all thought the same it would be one boring world.

I agree. MLK deserves a jillion times more respect than Jackson. That guy is a media ***** and escelates situations more then they need to be. And presidents just seem like puppets.

Heh, guess you can't say ho.

When I decided to post on this forum, my first post was in Harrison's thread. It was called something like, “Things that divide us.”

I introduced myself as an outsider because I felt like one. Tonight when I see people insulting Dr. Martin Luther King, I feel the same way.

There were so many black leaders who lost their golden years fighting this disease called racism. Those men could have spent their youth partying and having fun just like you and me but they could not.

Imagine their pain; imagine their grief when they see racism still alive and kicking.

I hope for the sake of humanity that it is just few dickless idiots that are racists.

I happen to like Jesse a lot. I've seen him get hauled in a few times when we were marching together with the Union. Not like...let him go in a few hours type of stuff either. At Yale, they were cuffed dragged...and did NOT get their arraignment within 24 hours, I can tell you that much. That's NOT spouting off for the TV cameras.

I mean, I'm in the labor movement, MLK died walking a picket line, he's my brother, what can I say? If you're brother will die for you, than you will die for your brother...and something about Jesus dying for our sins. That's what the reverend that's going to marry Bill and said to me about his time in El Salvador chasing the Gap, and Honduras chasing Kathie Lee Gifford's sweatshops. I can't remember the whole quote, but I promise it was good! LOL! He was inspired to become a minister by Dr. King, which is what made me think of him.
