Who would share nice recipes with the group? I am an everyday cook, not very skillfull in the kitchen when it comes to sophisticaded recipes, but this year I would like to prepare something special, Turkey, entrées, even dessert! Something that makes all the house smell good! Even if I am alone, I am good company and I deserve a good dinner!!!

Note that these "balls" will be flat after baking.

1-1/2 sticks of unsalted butter, softened (12 tablespoons)
1-1/4 cups sugar
1 large egg
1/2 cup molasses
2 cups all-pupose flour
2 teaspons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt

Combine the butter and 1 cup of the sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until fluffy & light, 3 to 5 minutes. Beat in the egg and molasses.

Sift the flour, soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and salt together. Add the butter mixture in 2 batches, beating just until combined. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 2 to 3 hours.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place the remaining 1/4 cup sugar in a pie plate. Shape the dough into walnut-sized balls and roll in the sugar to coat. Arrange 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets and bake until cracked and dry but still soft, about 10 minutes. Cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then trasfer to cool on wire racks.

They smell yummy!!!

Im bumping this up for the holiday season...Anyone have any realy truly great recipes they would love to share with us? I have a really great recipe for a sweet potato casserole somewhere, but I will have to find it.

I really want to try something new and different this year with the same old turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing.

Anyone?

I have the best broccoli casserole recipe and it is so easy. It is the only dish my kids ask for every single holiday.

Ingredients:

2 packages of frozen chopped broccoli
Ritz crackers
Shredded cheddar cheese
1 can of cream of mushroom soup
Butter or margarine
Milk

Grease a 2 quart casserole dish.
Cook the broccoli according to package directions and drain.
In a separate bowl mix the can of mushroom soup with 1/2 can of milk

Layer the ingredients in this order in the casserole dish:

Bottom layer:
Broccoli
Soup mixture
Small pats of butter or margarine
Shredded cheddar cheese
Crushed ritz crackers

Next layer:
Broccoli
Soup mixture
Shredded cheddar cheese
Crushed ritz crackers
Small pats of butter or margarine on top

Hint: i use lots of the cheese and crackers :)

Bake in a 350 degree F. oven for 30 minutes.

LOL Mark! If i serve enough of this, no-one will even care what a terrible cook I am..we will serve that first. Im gonna try the spice balls and the pecan pie...I swear. I am gonna post my reviews after the holidays. And definitely, definitey trying that broccoli casserole. It sounds like a neat twist on the old green bean casserole that we have had every single year...

And Babes, I haven't heard anything like your cake recipe, but Im gonna try it too! This will be so neat...I can try all these new things and add a little excitement, and we can have ageless holiday around my house!!! YUM!

Is molasses the North American substitute for treacle?

Savannah I was wondering the same thing so I did a Google on it....looks like if the recipe calls for *black* treacle, molasses would work, but if its *light* treacle, then something called golden syrup would work (whatever that is!).
I did find one page which said that we could even use Karo corn syrup to relplace treacle, light or dark!! :p

Its a bit confusing to us here in the states but Babes' recipe sounds so great I'd love to try!!

Babes...do you know what would be good for us to use?

We used to be able to get Lyle's Golden Syrup here as an imported food -- consistency is a bit thinner than corn syrup. It was in the jams/honey/spreads area.
