Having a cat

I am a dog lover AND a cat lover. There is MUCH to be said for the adoration and uncompromising enthusiasm that a dog displays, but there is also something about a cat ... one feels privilged when a cat gives them attention. The purr is a treasured reward. And "the head bump" is one of the best things in life!

Cats are messengers for the devil

Hmmm, coming a "mouse" I can see why that might be true for you!

Do I have to record my cat TALKING TO ME and play it backwards to get the message?

There is nothing sweeter than a cat. Every morning, my little boy kitty puts his paws up as if to say "pick me up mommy" and looks at me with his sweet little eyes... and then my heart melts. So, I pick him up and he flops his head over onto my shoulder and starts snuggling up against me. And then he starts putting his paws on my face (he's a toucher). And purrs until he falls asleep. All this of course makes it difficult for me to get my posting done here on ageless, so I try to do it one handed. And, then after he's had enough love, he runs on his merry little way. And that's it for him for the rest of the day. He only does this at this time of the morning every day.

Dogs..... wow. I don't know what to say about them. :D I have a fairly large dog named Maggie. Last night we decided to take her along for the ride to Taco Bell. OMG, that dog was sooooooo excited she was literally beside herself. Her whole body was wagging -- not just her tail. LOL

So, I put the leash on her and so far so good... but, after I opened the front door, she tore out of the house so fast, that she about yanked my shoulder out of its socket. My hand got thrown against the door jamb which scraped the skin off my index finger knuckle. I thought at first she had broken my hand.

Yeah, dogs are fun, but they are also powerful, too. And, this one is so powerful, I can't let my daughter take her for a walk because if I can't hardly handle her, my daughter definitely can't. I'm afraid she would dislocate her shoulder.

I simply adore cats and I used to always live with one until my son became alergic to them and I had to give our last cat away :(

I like them in all shapes and colours and ATTITUDES which some call "catitude"

That little bastard that you have in your signature line Chatters is called Popov. He won't stay still for one second (reason why the picture is out of focus) . You can never hold him or keep him in one place. Usually you only see a ball of black fur moving around the place like a hurricane. He gets into dust bins, over furniture, jumps from one couch to the other, he's just a ball of fire.

I love mellow cats that I can pet and the sound of a purrrrring cat is a trip to heaven but I also love the unfriendly ones. I can watch them for hours. They're absolutely hilllarious :D

LOL...girl, you crack me up! I just loooove your sense of humour. But I think you already knew that :p

I am also both a dog and cat lover. Well, I was more of a dog person before. When I lost Rocky in May, I didnt want another dog. It was too painful when I lost Rocky. But than came Sam :D
He is an energic one too! lol
He is almost 11 months old now and as most cats, when HE decided he wants TLC, than he comes to see me. Otherwise, he'll bite me if he doesnt want me to take him. Little devilish Sam lol
Now I also have Princess which my daughter rescued from the street. She is absolutely georgiousand a total sweetheart. Its been now about 2 months we have her and Sam still wont accept her. He gets jealous, jumps on her just to aggravate her...and me!
I tried everything. Almost. But you know cats. They have a mind of their own!
If someone have a magic remedy please let me know. I'm desperate!

I adore both cats AND dogs as well. I have 2 cats I love dearly.....someday when I have more time to dedicate to a pet I will get a doggie.
I tend to go above and beyond with my pets, so I am constantly cleaning up, preparing raw food for them, playing with them, cuddling, grooming.....SO MUCH!! They are my kids and I love them more than anything.

Here is a cute video of my Prince Sebastian as a kitten. :-)

Thanks so much for posting people. I love hearing pet stories! One of the reasons I was so excited to get a separate Pet Section was so we could all gush or cry about our beloved pets without bothering the rest of the board members!!! As a matter of fact, I was just getting ready to post on "Chit Chat" and BEG people to post some more stories here!!!

Whiterose, I know just what you mean about doing everything possible to avoid disturbing a cat that has fallen asleep on you! If my cat falls asleep on my chest when I'm lying down, NOTHING gets me to move until he wakes up! (Okay, there is one thing ... if I absolutely, positively HAVE to go to the bathroom! But that's the ONLY thing!) And don't you feel priviliged when a living creature falls asleep in your arms? It doesn't matter if it's a human baby, or a pet, or a grown-up person -- there's something about having someone/something so comfortable with you, so trusting of you, that they'd fall asleep. *Sigh* Love it.

Loucine, "catitude" - PERFECT!!! I've posted before that when a cat is staring at nothing, he's busy thinking "cat thoughts"and when they chase nothing, their chasing things that can only be seen with "cat eyes"!

Faith, I'm glad that you have added to your family and I'm sorry that Sam is being so naughty to your precious Princess! Two thoughts: check the internet, there are all sorts of methods for acclamating cats to each other; or is it possible, if Sam is not hurting her, that you could just allow him this bit of dominating fun for a bit, because after a while, she might just turn around and pounce on him!!!

BellaD, I think your cats may be two of the luckiest cats in the world! I can't see the video. :( Can you try to re-post it, please?

Awww Mouse, your bro's kittens and your dog are adorable. :)

And yes, Chatters, mine do that too. Cats are so fastidious. They groom constantly. Either themselves, each other, or me (trying to groom my hair). :D

And now, imagine this... our dog, who is fairly large and is apparently doberman, has now taken on full responsibility for grooming the cats. It's so cute. It's like she has become their big mama.

Chatter,
I did let Sam jump on her so she might give him a good scare maybe. She spits and all at him and he keeps going at it.
Not ALL the time but often enough.
You can see he likes to be the 'cat' of the place

Just that after awhile I just dont like it. Poor Princess she is such a sweetheart, never bothering him. He is doing the bothering for both of them!

I'll try again but darn its hard to do. :(

I have always wondered if cats are particularily subjected to mind altering circumstances and if they are simply all possessed or bi-polar. How can a loving cat who you stroke it's fur for 20 min on your lap turn around in the next second and draw blood from the hand that loved it????

I'm allergic anyways but always found cats to be manipulative and quite strange. of course I own a big dumb mutt. Ignorance is bliss she'll tell ya.

LOL, Whiterose, don't you love it when the cat(s) like your hair and then go all spastic trying to get it out of their mouth??? When he is just dying to groom me, to overcome this long-hair-in-the-mouth problem, my cat licks my eyebrows!

Isn't that just amazing how such a big dog can be so gentle? Nice. Get out your video and send it to America's Funniest Videos (or one of those shows that pays good money - NOT the one from Animal Channel, they just give you a hundred-lousy-bucks and a cheap t-shirt!

LOL Oh if someone could explain that weird cat behavior, Nibbles! My cat will be laying there, stretched out, purring like a motorboat (including that rev-up purr they throw in when they're really happy) and TOTALLY without warning, just freak! When he was younger, he'd bite, and then run. Having read that it is wrong, wrong, wrong to hit a cat and "the cat doesn't understand why your hitting him," I put up with this crap for years ... YEARS! And then one day I said to myself, "What am I stupid? I'm gonna let this cat draw blood and not whack him upside the head?" So I did. He still does that weird switch from intense relaxation/enjoyment to freak out, he still jumps up and runs, but he DOESN'T bite me anymore.

"Dumb mutt" reminds me of one of my favorite stories: When my dog, Candy, was young, I was always upset with her - she was so uncooperative, she drove me crazy. Then one day, a friend who knows a lot about dogs, visited from France and offered to take her for a walk. When she returned she said, "Chatterbox, I don't know how to tell you zis, but you're dog, Candy?, she is very stoopid." And I stopped and I looked liked this  for a minute, and then I rushed up to her and hugged her, saying "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I thought it was ME! I thought it was a bad relationship between her and I! Oh thank you for telling me she's stupid!!!!" From that day forward, I was kind and patient and gentle with my little stupid Candy and, you know what?, she turned out to be just the best, best dog!

Okay ... I have a cat that sniffs the breath coming out of my mouth and then sniffs the breath coming out of my nose. Everyone assumes that cats sniff our breath cuz they're curious about what we've been eating, but the nose? I am convinced that he is gathering more information than what I had to eat - but I don't know what kind of information. I wonder if he is learning things about my physical condition. Before you laugh, there are dogs that can detect certain types of cancer by smell. Anybody else have a cat (or a dog for that matter) that checks the breath coming from both the mouth AND the nose? Any idea what they're doing?

Why do we always want to believe that our pets love us ?

Not yelling. Yes, I believe that I would. There is a type of love that comes from being responsible for something and that love, although it CRAVES love in return, can continue to exist without it. I'd always be sad that the animal did not return my love, but I think I would continue to love it.

Chatter, yes, I do think that animals can "smell" sickness like cancer. Before we diagnosed my dog with cancer, I noticed that my other dog had started sniffing her alot. It was one of the things that clued me in to thinking that it might be cancer. She had no real symptoms that were directly obvious - other than an irregular heartbeat and not wanting to eat. I think it's definately important to pay attention to this. Also, my dog will sniff and try to lick any cut that I might have.

LOL, and if I've just eaten something that he thinks is yummy (like salmon) he tries to smell my breath :p .

*#*@(&$ I need a data cable to get the photos out of my cell phone. I don't have a digital camera and my phone isn't setup for email service. Is there any other way I can get the pictures from my phone to a computer..?

I have two kitties but I love kats and dogs. I won't get another dog until I'm certain that I have the time to train her and love her. It's been a really long time since I had a dog though, so I'm getting close. I may adopt a pooch from the local pound next spring. :)

The thing is that you can leave kats at home for the weekend with extra food and water and they're fine. Not so with a dog - you need a sitter/walker or someone who will take her to their house. A sitter/walker is not really acceptable because then the pooch is lonely most of the time!

Neither of my cats is psycho enough to claw or bite you for no reason. One plays a little more rough than the other but she will only use her claws or teen a little bit when you're rough with her first. This same one like to be 'spanked' like a dog; you know, patted hard on the haunches. She'll cry at you until you spank her! And the same one will give you nose kisses on command ("gimme a kiss").

I've written this somewhere before but the other one is neurotic and will make motions on the kitchen linoleum to try and 'cover' the food dishes, as well as spending inordinate amounts of time pawing in the litter box.

I'd have to throw this little twits out in the snow, after all I've done for them.

But...I KNOW my kitties love me. Neither of them is the aloof type. They're both all over me most of the time. They both sleep on my bed (I TRIED to stop them!), up against my body. They take turns sitting next to me on the couch if I'm camped there, working. If I sit on the floor, they're both on me in two seconds. Every morning, they pace the kitchen and start mohwing until I get through my morning rituals of making espresso, juice, vitamins, etc. and sit on the kitchen rug and give them some love. They freak out if I'm in a hurry and can't give them 'morning love'.

So, I'm lying in bed with my cat on my chest and he's perfectly happy and purring and then he jumps up like something bit him and runs off. Sooo, I begin to think about the Agelesslove members and wonder if they think I'm a monster for having hit my cat to stop him from biting me. Soooo, I think I'll post to say that he doesn't bite me anymore and I don't hit him anymore.

But I don't get around to it.

So, I'm lying in bed again with my cat on my chest and he's perfectly happy and purring and just digging on it, and then he looks at me like I have just turned into an alien, bites my belly and runs away. My BELLY!!!!!

I swear it's not my fault.

My bad-boy cat pulled one of his sweet things today. I let him in and went into the bathroom. When I came out a minute later, he was washing his shoulder. I knew that he was completely unaware of me, so I stood for a minute and watched him. When he lifted his head and saw me, he let out a so-happy-to-see-you meow and jumped up and ran over to me.

My cat enjoys going off into a room by himself and howling. No reason. When I come into the room to find out IF there might BE a reason THIS time,
he looks at me, and then looks away.

Today, he was howling and, like like a trained monkey, off I go to find him and make sure he's okay. He was in the clothes dryer.

Weird cat.

But he smelled nice and fresh when he came out.

There was a story of another howling cat in the British press recently. Apparently it's elderly owner had a stroke in the bathroom but she was saved by the howling of the cat which awoke the husband from his slumber. So a howling cat can be a good thing! I once had a cat which started howling after her daughter died which i think was a sign ot trauma. Mind you my neighbour's cat howls when she is on heat and this wakes me at 5!

Good to find so many cat lovers on this site!

I've seen kids do this, but never a cat!

My 10-12 year old cat, who until last month was an indoor cat during the day and an outdoor cat at night, through a series of circumstances is now a 98% outdoor cat, but I usually get a little bit of loving before he eats.

Okay, truth is I don't feed him until I get a little bit of loving, so shoot me.

This morning he RAN into the house, and was STARVING and crazy to eat: run to the empty dish, run back to me to try to get me away from Ageless, back and forth, back and forth, fast - and meowing. I opened his can of cat food, picked up his dish from the floor and started to wash it. (People who freak out at cats on counters, prepare yourselves.) When I looked up, he had jumped up on the counter and started licking the food in the can, but he couldn't get a bite, so he'd lick, run over to me at the sink, meow, go back and lick, run back to me at the sink, meow. When I put the food on the floor, he ate like a wildman and RAN back out the door!

Just like a kid, whatever was going on outside was really important and he was in a big hurry to get back to it! http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/3761/laughingdh5.gif

I miss my cat, but she has made a home for herself at my sister's house and is a part of that family. Now that ive been here a year Im thinking about negotiating a pet contract with my landlord, if that happens. Ill get a dog and not a cat. I dont think a cat would be safe in this all dog neighborhood, to be honest I think Ive only seen a cat once and thats the grey cat from across the street and it got out of the house and was looking like it was scared witless. Poor thing, her owner got it back indoors quick though.

I miss calling out to my cat and it stopping and looking at me with this afronted look on her face as if to say " You dare to address me Peasant?" lol then looking away and walking away from me. Stupid conceited thing lol I miss her.

Awww, Strawberry, it certainly is better that you know she's well and happy, but it doesn't stop the missing them. :(

Good for you! I hope your landlord will work with you!

Ewww, the story about the cat being so frightened brought back a HORRIBLE memory for me. While my sister, brother-in-law, niece (age 6) and nephew (age 4) were getting settled in another country, I took care of their indoor cat, and one day I came home to find that my dog sitting in the front yard. When I went in, I found that he had jumped through a window screen and NO CAT!!!! I was panicked, panicked, panicked (imagine I have typed "panicked" a thousand times and you'd get close to understanding how panicked I was. Oh yeah, and add to it that there were dogs behind my house that had already eaten one of my cats. There, now you've got an idea.)

I don't know how long I looked, but I had to go back into the house for something, and I looked down and saw a bit of orange fur underneath one of the bushes. He was there all the time, right next to the front door, but he was so frightened he didn't dare mew or come out.

Whewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

And "that look" your talking about that your cat gave you? I know it well. There was a time - after he deevolved into a feral animal - when I thought my cat had gone deaf: then I realized that when I popped open a can of cat food, he simultaneously whipped his head around and spit the piece of dry cat food he was eating onto the floor, and I said, "Yeah, duh, he's not deaf!"

Your comments remind me of one of the funniest truisms I have heard. It was said by the comedian, Gallagher. You're always trying to find a cat food that your cat likes and when you find one, you buy lots of it, and then he won't eat it anymore. That's because he walks into the pantry and looks at the cans of cat food to see which one you have the most of and decides that's the one he won't eat anymore.

Oh that is so true Chatters...........

About a year ago I brought some really fancy food for Pinot, to see if she liked it. She loved it, could not get enough, the complete 'super clean dish' thing. When that food was on offer I though "Ok I shall invest in a stock, as she likes it so much" Brought loads, after the first meal she refused to eat it again Grrrrrrrrrr *mutter* 'ruddy cooking fats' *mutter*

However, I have had the last laugh, Since Seren and Loki arrived in Dec, Pinot has decided that she will eat anything they eat, including the aforementioned food!

Evidently, the sight of two kittens chowing down with relish is enough make my fussy cat change her ways :)

Cats! you just gotta love 'em :D

What's that saying about cats?

"You don't own cats, they own you". Or something like that.

I love them, we have 3. 1 of them we have had since she was about 4 weeks old, I posted about her when we found her in the alley behind the house. We took another one in a couple of weeks before Christmas, it was Savannahs present... well, one of many! So we have 2 kittens, Cocoa and Mystery, both roughly the same age (7 monthsish) and one 2/3 year old, Lacey, who is the most skittish cat in the world!

They're great, they all have their own personalities. Only 1 is a lap cat... Mystery. Cocoa likes to play with Donnas hair and I think is slightly stupid. Lacey hides whenever there's too much noise for her, and looks at the 2 kittens with disdain when they're tearing *** around the house.

As for food... I try to mix it up so that they don't eat the same thing night after night because otherwise they don't eat it all. Not as bad as the cat I had back home, who had a sensitive belly and could only eat fresh chicken! Now that was one spoilt cat.

Cats are very independent, yet if they are loyal to someone, they are often more loyal than dogs are. Cats, like horses, can tell if you're a "cat person" or not. They know the minute you're around, whether or not you like him, am scared or confident to handle him or not. Even in vet surgeries / hospitals, there are always those who are "cat people" and "dog people". Cat people (ie. me) are able to do things with cats which non-cat people often struggle, esp. when it comes to long procedures or a more feral cat, often the vet would look for "cat-people" nurses for assistance. We can pick up cat's body languages in ways dog people can't, esp. because cats are lot more subtle. Restraining an aggressive cat is about 10x more difficult than an an aggressive dog, despite what a lot of people think.

But cats, as my feline prof says, are the "superior species". :p

I want a kitty of my own. Unfortunately, we have three that just use me (and not affectionately, either, might as well get an automatic door) and enjoy the company everyone but me. :(

Right now there are just too many to get another one into the picture. Does anyone know how to woo the heart of a cat?

To earn a cat's trust, it takes a very long time. For a start, you need to show the cat you're not afraid of it and that you're confident around your cat. Cats can sense anxiousness from miles away, and they do not like people who are not confident in handling them because it scares them, and in a way they take advantage of the fact that you're equally scared of them. They're predator species, so they will be very subtle and secretive, and will not sure their fear like dogs do. Aggression can sometimes be a sign of fear due to insecurity.

Take it slowly. Show that you love him/her daily by the smallest little things, ie. stroking, patting, observing their behaviour, and you'll gradually learn their body language. It's funny, but often cats, a bit like horses, will suddenly decide one day that they want to show their affection and loyalty to you. It just takes time.

Ha! My cat Oscar just now meowed to get my attention. I looked over at him and he was by his food bowls. He looked at the big one that has the dry food in it and gave me this look that said, "I can see the bottom of my bowl. Why can I see the bottom of my bowl? Fix it. Now."

Silly thing. There was still food in it. *shakes head*

Not the RIGHT AMOUNT. :p My cat eats only 1/2 of a small can of cat food at a time, but if I only GIVE him 1/2 a can, he eats it then sits there until I put the other 1/2 in his dish. Satisfied, he then walks away.

I was thinking this morning that, although my cat likes me, it isn't a Mommy/baby relationship. When he is extremely happy to see me, he calls me "Food Source" (as in running across the lawn in the morning meowing, "It's Food Source! Food Source! Food Source! Food Source! Hiiiiiiiii!") and when he's not happy with me, his meow drips with disdain as he calls me, "Hu-mon," (as in "Hu-mon, there is no food in my dish.").

I have both also, but the cat definitely gets laughed at the most, lol.....I have Odie and Garfield going on in my house. I swear the cat is the expert at plotting.

LOL

I have only right cat right now, and he's over 10 years old, so there's not so many LOL moments, but there are still plenty of smiles because I just love to watch him: the beautiful way he moves, the amazing ability to jump from a sitting position, the ever present amazement at how much like one of the big cats he is and he lives in my home, his "John Wayne" walk, sleeping on his back with his legs splayed out to catch a breeze, lying down with his head hanging backwards over the edge to get a different perspective, drinking out of the toilet with a wide-stance and his butt sticking up in the air, the heart-stopping moment when he's sitting in an open window, stretching his neck out to look both ways, the rhythmic movement of his stomach when he's in a deep sleep ... I never get tired of looking at him. And the purring - it makes me feel privileged that he enjoys my company and tickles me pink! :)

No comparison- give me a cat any day compared to a filthy dog.
