kindanice 02-06-2006, 06:55 PM I just noticed my doggie is having a problem urinating. Every minute or so he will go to the puppy pad and barely dribble. :( Has anyone had this happen before? I guess its to the vet in the morning. I am worried about him tho. He is about 9 months old. I dont know what could be the matter.

Kindanice, sorry to hear that your puppy's uncomfortable. Sounds like a urinary tract infection to me. As your vet's office may have told you, if he couldn't pass any urine, it would be an emergency, but frequent urination I guess can be treated tomorrow. Although having had a few urinary tract infections in my life and knowing how painful they are ....
When my dog started to strain to urinate, I used to give her a cup of cranberry tea mixed with milk. Now that she's older, I give her about an 1/8 of a cup of cranberry tea mixed with milk everyday. Ask your vet what he/she thinks of that idea at your appointment tomorrow.
CabinFever 02-06-2006, 11:23 PM Kindanice....I think Chatter's right - sounds like urinary tract infection. I hope everything works out ok.
Chatter, this is off topic, but most dogs don't tolerate milk very well (don't digest it well). Maybe you already knew this, or maybe your pooch is a superdog :D , but just thought I'd let ya know.... Most vets etc recommend not giving it to dogs...but yogurt is ok, actually it's good since it's sort of predigested already.
kindanice 02-07-2006, 07:26 AM Well, It is a urinary tract and bladder infection. Hes on a natural antibiotic now. I am  because I think he got this because he wasnt taken out to potty while he was away from us. He stayed 2 days at a doggie hotel last week while we had business to take care of. And I think they didnt take good care of him. Probably didnt let him out enough and he would NEVER potty in his play and sleep area. So I think he was having to hold it and got an infection. I dunno. When I picked him up and got him home he drank a whole dish of water at one time. I learned today that not drinking enough water allows for infection of the bladder also. I will never leave him there again. It came highly recommended tho.
CabinFever 02-07-2006, 09:36 AM Kindanice, I hope your doggy feels better soon.
When dogs are in a different environment, sometimes they refuse to drink the water. I'm not sure why this is....I think maybe it just tastes different and they don't like it? So, maybe that was part of the problem too.

I agree with CabinFever that this may have been caused by your dog's reaction to a different environment and not necessarily the boarding facility's lack of care. However, for myself, when it comes to dealing with pets that can't tell me what happened when I weren't there, I always go with my gut feeling. So if you have a sense that he didn't receive proper care when he was there, I'd trust that sense and not use the facility again.
Chatterbox 02-07-2006, 11:12 AM Thanks for the heads-up on milk, CabinFever, I know it's true for many dogs. So far, the little bit that I mix with the cranberry tea hasn't seem to affected her, but even if she doesn't have any adverse reaction you are absolutely correct that the plain yogurt would be better for her. Good advice, thanks.
Chatterbox 02-07-2006, 11:15 AM Kindanice, one more thing (DANG I wish I had thought about it BEFORE you went to the vet) how about the acidity of the urine? Some dogs are prone to urinary tract infections because of ... .... brain blip - can't remember if it's high acidity or high alkaline .... .... but, if your vet has a bit of holistic training, he/she might have some ideas on neutralizing your dog's urine, if appropriate.

Yep, I figured ya knew what you were doing, but thought I'd post, mostly just for others reading this. ;) That's great you are actively preventing an infection...you've got a lucky doggy!

Well, thanks for the compliment! Preventing infections with cranberry tea IS an excellent idea, for both dogs and humans, but your idea for putting it in yogurt instead of milk makes a good idea better!
kindanice 02-07-2006, 02:51 PM a while back my doggie unfortunately ate a tube of prescription medicine (i know...i know.... i felt bad but you gotta know my doggie) i dont care how well you pick up after yourself he ALWAYS finds something. he got sick from it and started shaking shortly after eating it. i was told to give him milk. wahlah...within 20 min. he threw up. you could see the medicine balled up in the milk. in a few hours he seemed fine :)
incidently, as the day has progressed he is able to potty more at each time he goes. i can tell he is feeling better...whew...the little things...they can get you worried :(
kindanice 02-07-2006, 07:25 PM yep, hes going to the potty better as time goes by. and also he just tried to eat my daughters journal. yep....hes feelin better :D
