Malani 03-07-2006, 06:22 PM My daughter is 11 and in Elementary School (5th Grade)
They go from 8 am to 2:20 pm Monday through Friday.
When does public schooling begin there? Here it is when they are 5 and enter kindergarten. (At least in Massachusetts)
arcobaleno 03-08-2006, 12:03 AM Now things are changing in Italy, so children can begin school (Kingergarten & Elementary) 1 yrs before
but for now a child goes to Kindergarten when he is about 3 yrs old until 5 yrs. (3 years of Kindergarten)
Elementary school begin when a child is 6 yrs old or less. (5 years of Elementary school)
All this in the public schooling.
lady_p 03-08-2006, 04:36 AM I live in Norway and my kids are 9 and 7. They attend 4th and second years respectivly.
Their day start at 0815 in the morning and three days a week they finish at 1140. Mondays the finish at 1300 and Wednesdays 1400. The main subjects are Norwegian, maths, English and social science. They have homework every day.
There is no cantine at the school so they bring packed lunches everyday.
the kids in Norway start school at 6 yrs of age, but most kids attend kindergarten before they start school.
If you want to know more please ask.. :)
Bodhi Tree 03-08-2006, 04:54 AM WOW, France is very old-fashioned. He is 9 and goes to school:
Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri- 8:30- 16:30
Every other Saturday: 8:30-11:30
No school on Wednesdays.
Only one teacher for all subjects and 28 students in the classroom, divided into two different levels or grades which is absurd.
They have lots of homework which is sad because for students who have other activities it's very tough to do all. They still teach writing with the old-fashioned attached letters. That's so dumb because everyone ends up writing the printing style. They even impose quill pens in some schools and fortunately this is not the case in my son's school, oetherwise I would have to use ink stain removers by the dozens of bottles.
My kid goes to music school 3 times a week which has a very tough programme and exams of musical education, piano and singing. Failing the exams means not being accepted as a student the following year. But he's very good and I'm not anxious in that area.
He also goes to karate twice a week. He never gets home before 19:30 in the evening and still has to do homework, piano, reading and writing music.
I'm sure you all think I'm crazy for having him do all of that, but the karate is his time of leasure and the music is vital because he's VERY talented and it would be a shame not give him the opportunity to learn music.
whiterose 03-08-2006, 04:57 AM Interesting schedule your children have arcobaleno. I notice that your younger one has longer days than your older one. :)
My daughter is 12 and is in the 6th grade here. We call this grade "middle school" here. Her classes start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. Her primary classes include math, science, language arts (fancy name for english :) ), and social studies. Then for 2 other periods each day, she has other classes that usually last about 6 weeks before it rotates. So far, this year she has had music, art, computer lab, industrial technology (woodworking), health, and most recently started gym. She'll have home economics in the last few weeks of the school year.
She goes to school Monday through Friday. No Saturday hours (thank goodness :D ).
Her primary classes usually last about 2 hours. She usually has homework, but not alot since she gets alot of work done at school due to the length of her class.
By the way, she started kindergarten when she was 5 years old and was in that for 1 year before switching to elementary school (primary school). She was at that school for 5 years before coming to this middle school. She will be at this middle school a total of 3 years before going to the high school, which will be 4 years in length.

Idem for my daughter.
She use to bring packed lunches when she goes until 16:00.
The other days she have lunch at home. And never before 14:30.
Is it obligatory kindergarten in Norway?

No you are not crazy. :p
My daughter plays to volleyball twice at week and now she is learning play piano.
She has a lot of homework too
Yesterday for example :
Math = she had to learn multiplication tables 4 and 5. + 12 multiplications
Science = ant’s life, read and color the “ant hill”
Italian = to learn the present of the verbe to have with meaning of action
and to have with meaning of owe and make 12 phrases 6 + 6.
History = to read 3 times an article about pregnancy and to underline the
male organs and female organs with different color.
Oh....and teachers were in a good mood

It's interesting to notice that the most of kindergarten begin at 5 yrs...
Do they learn to write and read during this year?
And about elementary and middle school.....how many languages does your daughter know?
Are you satisfied as mother about USA school and in what they are offering to your daughter?

Do they learn to write and read during this year? Yes, they typically do, although some students are still learning reading skills going into the 1st grade.
And about elementary and middle school.....how many languages does your daughter know?
She really only knows english, but her elementary school began introducing her to the spanish language all throughout her years there. They never had a formal spanish class, but instead, found ways to incorporate spanish words here and there into all her classes.
I don't think she'll be required to learn a foreign language while in middle school, but I do think it is mandatory in high school. They offer spanish, french and german at our high school.

Yes, I am, but I do have to admit that I don't really have any other frame of reference to compare it with. I do think that some other countries teach things to their students at an earlier age than here in the U.S. For example, when I was in college in the 70's, my bf was from Iran. And he told me that the college level calculus he was taking was taught to him several years earlier in his high school.
Another example is your 7 year old learning about pregnancy and male/female organs. My daughter is only just now learning about these things in health class in middle school and she is 12.

My daughter is learning English since her last year of kindergarten, and when she will be 9 years old (4th class), she has to study also French for 2 years.
So at the end of Elementary school she will know English and a little of French.
At middle school (11-13) you can study English and French\Spanish and at the 3rd year of middle school (last one) you can choose to study "Latin" too but as activity extra-scholastic and at high school is mandatory two languages, of course one is English.
Sidhra 03-27-2006, 05:04 PM My daughter is 8 yrs old we live in San Antonio Texas, but she has been in schools in Alabama and Georgia. Alabama *sucked* maybe it was the district we lived in but they were wayyyyy behind then this year before we moved to Texas she did 3 months in Hell. Georgia schools were so farrrrr ahead of what she had been doing that she was getting her butt kicked academicly, she had always done well in her classes and had been advanced by thier standards. Now we have the happy medium, she is doing well, this school actually has recess (play-time). She gets on the bus at 6:45 Gets home around 2:45.
