So, IF I decide to get a puppy instead of a young dog, my biggest concern is the housetraining. I rent and even though the carpet is such a color that almost nothing shows on it, I still don't want to have a puppy peeing all over the place and have to replace it because of it turning stinky.
Have you had luck with the crate training method with a puppy? It seems that if you stick to a routine in the beginning that this method would work.
Thanks!

Worked good with mine until he got the infection. But then it was all good again until he got upset because of all the boxes (moving). All in all, I think its terriffic. I have had dogs before and didn't know about the crate training and it has been a disaster. Really, it was pretty easy to train him with the crate. He goes right in and goes to bed at night. Then gets up with us in the morning. No prob. except peeing in it with those 2 probs. we have had. But he stopped now. :)

Thanks, Kinda.
I'm planning on getting a puppy that will grow into a medium to large size dog, so I'm not so concerned with her learning to sleep in the crate as the housetraining aspect of using the crate.
My place is pretty small so I would want to eliminate the crate once the doggy was housetrained.
This worked for you?

well, the reason for the sleeping in the crate is so they won't potty during the night while they have free range of the house. but, i suppose after a while of doing this, they would get the idea. or at least get on a schedule. u know, potty before crate time. then when you get them out in the morning. i guess if you eliminated the crate after a while they would just stay on that schedule and not go on your floor. :) but my little one sleeps in his crate to stay outta trouble. he eats anything he can find...hehe
another tip is to put them in a crate that just fits them or else they will go in one part of the crate and lay in the other. if you want to go ahead and get a crate thats bigger than poochie you can get a crate divider at petsmart or somewhere so the dog will not have room to pee and lay. if the crates too big, it won't teach him a thing. that way you don't have to get a smaller one then larger later. ;)

It worked great for my parent's puppy (who's a smallish kind of dog - about 20 lbs full grown). We had the occasional accident when she got REALLY excited or was left alone too much early on...but I think we had only a total of 4 while training her.
Good luck with the new puppy - I love them. I wish we could have one in my apartment!
You'll show us pictures, right? :)
