I'm So Excited -- Music Stuff!

*sigh* As you all know, I am terrible at making long stories short. I apologize but I am so excited!

I'm a Christian, a mom & wife, and a musician. In that order (although sometimes the kids and hubby might argue about which comes second, family or music :D ). I've sung in bands for years -- my kids spent their early childhood playing around mike cords & monitors, learning lyrics with me! Anyway, I've put music on the back burner for the past 10 years, although I still teach flute and played occasionally up until I shattered my arm last fall. Once I became a Christian, I thought if I ever sang again, it would probably be on a praise & worship team.

Tim and I recently started attending a new church and a couple of weeks ago, I joined their praise & worship team. As it goes with most churches, they've got about 9 million vocalists so I've been waiting for my turn to sing, thinking, "who knows when that will be?"

Well.

Recently, our ministry has been doing a series on Walking In His Steps and, for fun, the music pastor decided to break all of the praise & worship team down into small groups and, each week, a CD with the word "Walk" in the title would be blindly chosen by someone in the congregation and the worship team chosen would have one week to prepare the song. We've had "I Would Walk 500 Miles," "I Walk The Line," "Walk Like An Egyptian," and "I Walk The Line." My group was last... I was so afraid we would have to sing Aerosmith's "Walk This Way!" -- great song, don't get me wrong, but it's not exactly in my voice range so I figured one of the guys would sing it and I'd be a backup singer... I was WRONG! Yay!

Our song was chosen... I tried to stay low key so I wouldn't step on anybody's toes but NOBODY ELSE WANTED TO SING IT so I get to do it! I am so excited!!! It's Kelly Clarkson's new one: Walk Away! AND... it's right in my voice range, exactly my style... I can't believe it! Who would have thought that my introduction to the world of praise and worship teams would start with a funky R&B song right in my range that nobody else wanted to sing lead on???

An additional nice surprise has been my kids' reactions. They're teenagers. By sheer virtue of the fact that I'm Mom, I've been banished to "wereyouevercool?-dom." I've accepted it -- I'm okay with it! I just sort of assumed they'd groan and beg me to back out of this to avoid humiliating them. :) What a nice surprise to know I was wrong -- they have been so supportive! My 15 year old has been hinting around that maybe if she's really nice to the youth pastor (our guitarist), he'll let her come sing backup for me. And even my 21 year old, upon hearing what song I'm singing, said, "Wow, mom -- that song's got a real R&B groove to it; it's perfect for you!"

Nobody pinch me cause if I'm dreaming I don't want to wake up!

That's terrific! Moms put so many things they love on the back burner, I'm glad you're doing something that you love.
