Hey guys

My son as you know is almost 2 years old.... I know he's teething still ... Getting those 2 yr old molars OUCH.. but anyway.. he has this habit of putting all his fingers in his mouth and gagging himself and now he threw up today because he keeps sticking his fingers down his throat.....
Anyone else experience this???? I can NOT get him to stop... and he's old enough now he understands NO....

My oldest did that. She didn't stick her finger down her throat, but she'd cough and cough until she'd gag and throw up. She was about your son's age. I don't have any advice on how to stop it, but she did stop eventually.

I believe it's just a phase, but trust me, you are not alone.

connor
bout the same age
VERY sensitive gag reflex
progectile vomited any and every time we ate. home or abroad, mattered not. i always took two changes of clothes and plenty of cloth diapers if we got up the nerve to go out to eat.

eventually he grew out of it.

took long enough tho.

My daughter (who's turning 5 on the 19th) did the same exact thing when she was your son's age. She also had a problem transitioning to solid foods because anything with a "mixed" texture like macaroni and cheese, or oatmeal would automatically make her gag and vomit. I swear, I've cleaned up more kid puke in a three year period than most mothers of twelve have dealt with in an entire lifetime. Anyhow, we had her evaluated and tested for dysphagia, and all kinds of assorted digestive diseases and there was nothing wrong with her at all. Our pediatrician did, however suggest, that some kids suffer from "silent" reflux, where the symptoms aren't severe enough to cause a major problem, but very small amounts of acid back up into the esophagus and cause mild irritation. Apparantly a 2 year old will typically react to that by sticking their fingers down their throat. I'd talk to your pediatrician about it to see if he or she might recommend trying some baby Mylanta or a pediatric version of Prilosec or something similar. In our daughter's case, once they ruled out a physical cause, it turned out that gagging herself was strictly a behavioural thing because she was just grooving on the attention she got, when Mommy and Daddy wigged out everytime she did it. The doctor advised us to try completely ignoring it and refusing to react at all (even though it went against every parental instinct that we had)...and I'll be darned, but she completely quit doing it after a few days.

Good luck! (and buy a whole bunch of Oxyclean Laundry Stain Remover...it gets the barf stains out better than anything else I've tried.:) )

Hey Mer,

I know I don't have a child yet so I am not qualified to answer this...but I just wanted to share something with you.

My best friend has a daughter who is almost two (Mer I can't believe your baby is so grown up!!! I remember when you first told us you were pregnant!!!)...anyway, her daughter's new favorite thing to do is to choke herself, she will choke herself with objects, with her own hands..she will put her fingers in her mouth..the whole nine yards...Her daughter also likes to bash her head into things :D And interestingly enough the baby is also very brilliant...

She took her to the doctor and her doctor said this is normal and common part of childhood and that as babies discover new things, even if they are things that we adults know are not the most pleasant of things...they will do them over and over again until they discover something new. The doc said just like these ladies said..that it was a stage and she's grow out of it.

So..I know I said nothing new, just thought you might like to hear of another "chocking/gagging" kid...
