@#$%! Dog hair rant!

I have primarily owned cats for most of my adult life. I had a dog once, but he was mostly out doors.

About a year ago, we found this sweet, innocent, adorable stray that we adopted and named Maggie:

Yes, she's adorable, isn't she? Every last billionth hair on her body, hair on my carpet, hair on my furniture, hair on my clothes, hair on the bathroom floor, hair on my kitchen floor (rolling like tumbleweeds), hair in the lint trap in the clothes dryer, hair on the back of the toilet where it apparently falls off our clothes, hair in my car, and hair in our mouths (bleccchh, pffffft, ptooie).

Today, my daughter vacuumed for me and OH MY LORD -- she vacuumed up so much dog hair that was enough to make a labrador. We had to empty the cup on the vacuum three times and stop and clean out a dog hair clog.

I am FINISHED with carpeting. I plan to get laminate flooring sometime within the next few weeks (please say a prayer to the good Lord Jesus that my plans come through). And then we just need to run a swiffer over the floors every day and I hope that'll be easier to clean up.

She just recently started this massive shedding thing she has going on. I'm sure it's because it's 90+ degrees outside. But, she's an INDOOR DOG for crying out loud.

We're brushing her every day. Sometimes twice a day. And the hair that we're able to brush off of her is enough to make a small poodle out of.

I have FOUR cats and this dog sheds more than all four of my cats COMBINED.

Anyway, just had to rant after spending my morning cleaning out my vacuum cleaner. YUCK.

LOL Chris, I think it's the latter 'cause that's her guilty look. :p

btw, I had to asterisk out your creatively placed word. Very ingenious of you. ;)

I originally thought only long haired dogs shed... until I got a boxer. They shed too. He now lives with my mom after the divorce because I live in a small apartment and I only have my cat.

Try keeping his hair trimmed really short. It makes quite a difference.

But, Flyer, I'm not sure what I could trim without her being buzzed down. Because her hair isn't long at all. Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not sure what I could trim.

And Sheila, that's what I've been saying about this dog. When I had a long-haired dog, he didn't shed nearly as much as this dog who I consider a short haired dog.

Haha!!! I love that. Mine would probably consider that to be similar to a slow painful death.

But yeah, I have 2 dogs - both very very hairy. One, lucky me, doesn't blow his coat once or twice a year...he blows it all year long. I've never seen an animal produce so much wool...and yes, it is just like wool. For some reason the breed just sheds year round. I get a grocery bag of hair off him every couple days.

My solution...adapt to the hair. Breeders of this dog warn people interested in it that you will never win the battle of the hair - you have to adapt. So, you just learn to deal with having hair floating around...and learn to not put on black clothes until the minute you are ready to walk out the door. ;) Oh, and yeah, get rid of the carpet, unless you LOVE vacuuming.

Mine's afraid of the vacuum cleaner. In fact, she's afraid of her own shadow. :p

The hair loss has been much better the past two days. We are staying on top of brushing her frequently and that is definitely helping. I guess I was just surprised to find that all of a sudden, she was losing massive amounts of hair. Being a cat person, I don't have a lot of experience with dogs. Hopefully, we are at the end of the tunnel and back to the usual level of hair loss we've been familiar with the past 10 months since that sweet creature entered into our lives.

The answer to this is to buy cases of those sticky, rolley thingers and have one in every room of the house. Hand them to you guests like party favors; they work better on upholstery than any vacuum cleaner!

You're right about that Rozie. I have 2 at home, 1 in my car, and one in my office at work. *sigh*

Actually, long haired dogs shed less than short haired dogs. Long haired dogs, whose hair continues to grow, shed at about the same rate we do. Short haired dogs are continually shedding their coat and it is being replaced with new hair.

Kat . . . I haven't finished this thread yet and you may have aleady gotten rid of your carpet, but I just recently bought a Dyson Animal Vacuum and it is amazing how great it works! I highly recommend it to anyone who has carpet and dogs. :D
