Does anyone have any experience having dental work done without the use of Novacaine et. al and using something as an alternative? I've had bad reactions three times in a row with "caine" medication, the last landing me in the ER....
I've had an allergy workup, and there doesn't seem to be any "caine" that is going to work for me.
Anyone have any suggestions? Even my docs and dentists (I've been to three now in the past year) are stumped, short of knocking me out to do dental work.
Chatterbox 08-04-2006, 12:46 PM What's wrong with being knocked out for dental work, Kat? It's my favorite - gas makes me horny and I talk dirty to the doctor! :D
Isn't there also an I.V. drip that is used? Do you have allergies to those things also?
You are too funny!!
Gas doesn't numb the teeth, it's more for relaxation, and that's not really my problem. I could do IV anesthesia, but I have other issues (cardiac arrhythmia) that makes it a little risky in the office of a dentist.
I actually just got back from the dentist, and I tolerated replacing a couple of fillings with nothing, no problem. She said we could do some valium and pain meds for the big stuff and see how that goes...this is the first dentist that's been willing to work with me. OF COURSE, IT'S A WOMAN!!!!!!!!!!! :) She's great!
Chatterbox 08-04-2006, 03:44 PM I am glad to hear that it worked for you, Kat, but you put my teeth on edge - EEEEEEEEEKKKKK! When I was a kid, welfare sent us to dentists but they didn't pay for novacaine and I have fillings in almost every one of my teeth - baaaaaaaaaaaaaad memories.
Re: gas. That kind of surprised me that it doesn't stop the pain. Do they hold people down??? I remember nothing, so that's good enough for me!
well see how i tolerate it.....anything's gotta be better than ending up in the ER with out of control blood pressure and pulse and change in level of consciousness with the novacaine!!!
sorry you had such ugly experiences as a kid.
lencarol 08-04-2006, 09:49 PM Yeah, that gas doesn't work at all. Neither does the novocaine for me, so have to suffer through. So I just don't go! Thankfully have really good teeth. Have only had one real cavity. The dentists like to drill the divets in my teeth anyway, saying they will become cavities some day (due to bruxism) and better to get them filled now. No more! Will wait for the real thing, then will go if I have to, ugh ugh.:(

Thank you, Kat. I'm sorry you are having such bad experiences now (you too, lencarol.) The only other possibiilities I can think of are hypnosis or acupuncture.
joelstrouble 08-05-2006, 04:48 AM My mom that is absolutly terrified of dentists went to one that did hypnoses (sp), and she highly recomand that! It's a bit more expencive of course.. but I would think it is worth it.
I do my own hypnosis while I'm in the chair, i.e. I go somewhere else...and yesterday I suddenly realized I was doing this so much that the dentist was talking to me and I wasn't responding because I really wasn't there.
I have thought about acupuncture. Wonder if it would help, but don't know how I'd get an acupuncturist to come to the dentist with me! In China, they do major surgery with just acupuncture, so it must work!
emeraldseahorse 08-24-2006, 08:01 PM If I go for anything more than a filling i always get knocked out I can't stand to have my teeth worked on and will gladly pay the extra money to avoid the stress.. I don't do well with the"caines" either it is never enough to exactly numb me so like me get put under.
satya 08-24-2006, 08:16 PM How about trying laser dentistry. I haven't tried it but its supposed to be pain free. No drill is used.... just a laser. It costs more.... about 30% more, but I'd say well worth it to avoid the problems of the past.:D
well, so far, i have had four teeth worked on (old fillings replaced) with no novacaine, no nothing.....and i've done fine.
this dentist is going to just try valium on my for the crown preps. she says i'm doing so well with nothing that she expects me to be able to tolerate the crown preps with just some valium and advil. i'm TOUGH as nails evidently! it's so much better than being afraid of having a bad reaction to medication.....i'm really grateful to this dentist.
and by the way, they can't use laser on you if you already have metal in the teeth. this dentist offers laser, but it won't work for me because every single tooth that needs attention already has metal in it.
